Last Monday night I headed to 185 Bar & Restaurant at the Chifley Hotel located in the Perth CBD for a nice dinner with my Sister Jane who is over from Melbourne and Bree. Being a Monday night the restaurant wasn’t buzzing with people, but I’ve heard that weekends are always busy.

We started with a tasting plate that consisted of quail, scallops, a blue cheese tart and pork wrapped in prosciutto. I also ordered the duck spring rolls. We shared all of this and it was all cooked to perfection and really tasty.

To go with our dinner I decided on a Torbreck Juveniles from the Barossa Valley ($60) – I was keen to try this particular wine as a friend of mine has a stake in this winery. It was a very different wine, but one that the three of us really enjoyed.

For mains I decided on the sweet lips snapper served with fennel, asparagus and lemon butter sauce. Presentation was really nice, and the flavours were great. It didn’t take long for me to get that down! Bree ordered the 185 Pie, which was filled with chicken, mushroom and chorizo sausage and came served with French fries and salad. It was a great size meal and at only $22, great value.

Jane went for the Chicken Kiev and this also was a big meal. It was served with a semi-dried tomato and chardonnay sauce which just topped off the flavours.

As if we weren’t full enough, our waitress offered us the dessert menus which we accepted! Jane and I shared the double choc sandwich and Bree went for an Affogato. The double choc sandwich was sitting on both dark and white chocolate sauce and was delicious. Bree’s affogato (I’d never heard of one of these before!) was served in a cocktail glass and looked impressive. She raved about how velvety it was, and said it was one of the best Affogato’s she’s experienced!

The overall experience was lovely and the service was professional and efficient.

I guess all in all we couldn’t fault the 185 Bar & Restaurant and would be delighted to head back there again.

Having heard much about the pie at 185 Bar & Restaurant, we headed down there to give it a go. However, the contents of the pie changes daily, and I wasn't all that keen when I found out it was turkey. The waitress could tell I was confused and when I ordered the fish of the day hastily purely because she was waiting to take my order, she recommended the lime risotto. It was definitely the tastiest, most well cooked risotto I've ever eaten at a restaurant. The flavours were so distinctive and simply delicious. My partner ordered the steak, and he deemed it one of the best steaks he's had so far. Also had a side of fries with freshly prepared aioli that was light and fresh.

Service:
     
Service was very professional, and the waitress even talked me through my meal decision. She asked me what I would usually order, what I liked/disliked and confidently recommended something I totally enjoyed.

Ambience:
     
Although quite sophisticated, the dining area looks and feels a bit bare. For a Saturday night reservation, there was probably only 6 tables of diners.

Overall:
You hardly take notice of the surroundings when you're enjoying your food that much. Outstanding food - try it.

Went for lunch with my Mum and Sister on a cold Winters day - and the menu was SO appropriate. Me and mum tried the 2 risottos - mine was the crab and scallop - beautiful flavours - you could actually taste the scallop, despite there only being 1 whole scallop and the risotto just having tiny shreds of seafood rather than any chunks. It came with pieces of avocado which made a nice contrast to the seafoodiness of the rice, but I'm not sure it improved anything. Mums honeyed pumpkin risotto was devine but a little rich after the first few bites. My sister had the beef cheek with truffled mash, possibly the best mashed potatoes I've tasted. The beef cheek was so tender I could have stolen bits with a blunt spoon! Bit gelatinous though.

Started off brilliantly, but they seemed to lose interest as the afternoon progressed.

Ambience:
     
Nice atmosphere, little quiet (only 2-3 other tables full). Didn't like that they have TV's, even without sound, doesn't match the classy decor.

Overall:
Would like to go again - a few other dishes on the menu are calling me.

All-in-all a wonderful lunch at 185 Bar!

Went in with a mate and had a nice bottle of Chardonnay, with a tasting plate consisting of Pork Belly, Kangaroo Skewers, Salmon Terrine and Gazpacho Soup. ($27 - for two)

The Pork Belly could have been slightly more salted without having to add salt yourself but the plate was great, good sauce with the Kangaroo and some of the freshest salmon I have had in a while. Stand-out was the Salmon Terrine, with a leek boundary holding it together.

Mains I had the steak ($35 - choice of fillet or sirloin), blue, and it came out perfectly cooked, nice big fat juicy piece of meat, with thin pumpkin chips, thin parsnip? (Don't quite remember) chips, a VERY well cooked potato & bacon rosti, and some bright green broccoli.

It was a brilliant meld of ingredients and surprised me a lot, just a really good combination.

I ALWAYS get crappy rostis with the outside burnt and inside raw or what seems to be a baked/steamed rosti, as it is reasonably hard to get the perfectly cooked combo from outside to in, but this was ideal.

Didn't opt for dessert because we were in a bit of a rush, but VERY happy we dropped in and had lunch, as the ambience is great and yourre definitely going to see me there a bit over the summer.

Say hi if you do! I will dazzle some pretty girls there next time.

Service was fine, everything timely and well organised.

I just can't fault this place. My friend and I went there for lunch during the week. What a funky spot! We both ordered risotto dishes. My friend - being a vegetarian, ordered the beetroot risotto and said it was divine. I ordered the lime prawn risotto and I have to say that it melted in my mouth! The flavours all came together perfectly. The one thing I will say is that there were only 3 things on the menu (entree and main total) that a vegetarian could have. There should be more selection. Other than that - what a delightful place!
