Food:

Excellent traditional German/Austrian food - a simple menu, not overpriced and extremely well-presented. Every dish is served with a fresh, crisp, traditional, dressed salad. No mesculun (thank goodness), but with iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato and onion.

Meals take a long time to prepare; so don't go unless you have the whole night to spend chatting with your friends.

Very large serves, so be very careful not to over-order your meals. I had the Schweinehaexen which was a 1kg pork knuckle with fried potatoes; unfortunately, I'd eaten so much prior to the main course, I had to doggy-bag half my meal.

Service:

You couldn't ask for a better hostess/manager/maitre d' than Alice! She's courteous, charming, efficient and she won't allow you to destroy a good fillet steak by serving it well-done! it's rare, or medium-rare or nothing. There was another lovely waitress, but I didn't get her name.

Ambience:

Old-Style, Swiss/Austrian/German/Homely. Dimmed lights and European music in the background. I loved it. For smokers, you can smoke in the courtyard in the front, and the restaurant goes back a long way. Bookings are essential.

Overall:
I'm planning my next evening to this restaurant soon. It's going to be one of my favourites and I hope it will be one of yours as well.

We have dined at this restaurant twice and enjoyed the experience each time. There's is nothing flash about the decor but the food is great and there's plenty of it. The kids especially enjoyed the rissoles and schnitzel (though ask for entree servings if having both). Each visit the service was excellent, though we have not been when it is crowded. Would definitely recommend this restaurant; though make sure you are really hungry as the food is filling (even when having entree sizes!) Good choices of beers and can BYO wine if not a beer lover.

First up - this is a fully licensed venue and they don't really appreciate you bringing beers with you - though wine is fine.

This is like visiting your German grandparents for a Sunday roast - similar in the respect that the decor consists of tapestries, prints and nick knacks but Alice, our hostess, could be your Nan. And the food is fantastic.

Our group had the soup of the day (pumpkin $4.50) which was ok but lacking a bit in flavour, followed by Weiner Schnitzel (huge, $17.50), Schweinenbraten (rolled pork roast, around $20?) and the Gebratene Ente (half a duck stuffed with apples $28.50). All the meals were large servings, served with potatoes and sauerkraut. The meat was cooked to perfection - nothing was dry or over cooked. I had the duck (which I couldn't finish!) which was great - a few bones to pick out but not enough to detract from the experience.

Throughout, we sampled a selection of German beers (Pils and wheat beers) which, as always, are tasty and filling. Then we enjoyed a coffee ($2.20, standard percolated version) with our dessert. We had the Apfelstrudel and a few others, all served with icecream ($6).

This was a return visit for us and a great place to go if you want a solid feed with a group of mates. It's one of our favourites. Prices are reasonable for the quality and size of servings. Generally need to book ahead - last time we went it was packed, this time was a little less busy but that's probably more a sign of the time of year than anything else. Parking is out the back. Enjoy!
