Welcome to Belgian Beer Cafe Westende

Belgian Beer Cafe Westende

The tiny country of Belgium is home to a population of more than 10 million people. They have approximately 115 breweries and over 30,000 cafes, in perspective they have 3 times the density of pubs than in the UK. Belgians drink more than 100 litres of beer per head of population. Belgian beer is known for its exotic ingredients and spices, herbs and fruits and sugars. They have around 60 different styles, many of which are found nowhere else in the world.

At the Belgian Beer Café we market many different styles, some of which are not readily available in Australia. We believe this adds to our uniqueness and keeps us in stead as true purveyors of fine Belgian Beer and cuisine.

Westende is as authentic as the beer itself. It is a perfect replica of the type of Café that became the centre of life in Belgium in the 1930’s. It was a place to meet, relax with friends and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

As well as the traditional surroundings and the glorious Belgian beers, Westende’s menu provides you with a taste of Belgian Cuisine. Mussels served in enamel pots, tasting plates to share. Or Waterzooi, a creamy seafood stew – as authentic as the enamelled stove in the corner.

Opening Times Belgian Beer Café Open 7 days for Drinks, Lunch and Dinner
Monday – Saturday 11.00am - 12.00midnight
Sunday 12.00midday – 10.00pm

We had dined here on several occasions prior to our LAST. Decided to go for tapas. A groups of six of us. The food was simply appalling! They had run out of most options and what there was was of extremely poor quality and preparation. In effect we ended up with a choice of cheese cubes and prosciutto! There was one other dish and frankly we cant remember what it was it was so awful. When we asked for more we were told "this is only tapas" ...as if somehow it was not the done thing to request more food!?

Service:

The female waiter was totally uninformed and 'missing in action' most of the time. Unfriendly, inexperienced, uncaring, off-hand - are words that come to mind. When it came time to leave we were unable to find someone of any "authority" to report our experience to.

Ambience:

Could have been OK. The area set aside for tapas is quite nice with a potentially good atmosphere. The table we had booked had been given away to other diners. One of our party had previously gone in the week before to book the table especially.

Overall:
This place has got to be totally forgettable - except the experience was sooo bad we cant!! It was one of those experiences we felt reluctant to pay for - something we cant EVER recall happening before. Such a shame as the choice of Belgian beers is wonderful.

I come here often and it's a place I regularly take my out-of-towners to impress them with. A bit pricey but well worth it. My last visit the bf and I had the beef burger, quote from the boy "i just orgasmed a little bit"
I myself am not a fan of beetroot but the burger has beetroot relish which was yummy. they also served the chips with sauce underneath, quite nice i thought cus the top chips always get covered with salt and the bottom are flavourless. time before that i had the kilo of mussels and ive had the tasting plate as well. if you order chips alone they come in a cool paper triangle.

Service:

average pub service but always quick on the numerous times ive gone.

i usually go when its not busy but theres still ambience. Last night I went was a saturday lunch and we sat by the window. lovely.

Overall:
love it. i go all the time. the menu only has a few items but i think the beer selection would make up for that.

Typical pub food - we had chips and burgers. They were brought out quickly and were perfect to soak up their delicious beers - don't expect a culinary delight.

Service:

Typical of a bar - line up at the bar and the staff served us with a smile.

Ambience:

Friday night drinks and it was buzzing, great ambiance but not so packed that you couldn't move and it was a lot more casual and relaxed than a lot of pubs are on Friday night.

Overall:
A nice pub!

Found the menu to very boring. All food looked very similar. Not really what you expect when paying up to $36 for a main course. Whilst the quality was ok...this is really nothing special. Better off staying home and cooking sausages & steak on the bbq and mashing some spuds!

Service:

Very little rave about here also. The supervisor was attentive however the staff were not in it for the service factor. It seems the restaurant was staffed by 'food runners' & 'order takers'.

Ambience:

Great part of town with lots of options and the bar is always full but this is definitely somewhere to steer clear of on a hot summers day/night!

Food was not as good as I would have expected, I chose the 1/2 duck which was disappointing as even though I was not expecting half a chook but do know the size of the half duck and this was not that. It was a let down. Brownie was heavy but nondescript in flavour, everyone kept palming theirs off to others cause they just couldn't be eaten.

Service:

Not very impressed with the service, for the prices we paid I would have expected a bit more from the service. We were rushed into ordering and had that feeling of being 'processed' even though we had booked the table and had to wait for 2 more to arrive. This was all before 7.30 too

Ambience:

Ambience is nice, albeit staff were smoking upstairs directly above our table... yucko! I was informed the smell was from the wood fire?????!!!! So not the same guys!

Overall:
Just disappointed... The setting is right but the staff seem too mechanical and not enjoying their work... The prices are too high for the quality of food being presented. I don't mind paying these prices if the service and food, match the quality.

Ever had a Leffe blonde and moules-frites?

This place combines a Belgian drinking joint, a nice beer garden and an excellent restaurant. The service is always perfect and the food is delicious.

The mussels are tasty and come in 1kg buckets with fries and mayonnaise, the Westende burger is not one of the chef's best but the Scotch fillet is divine!

Beer and food are quite pricy though. We would go more often if it was cheaper.

What a great place this is! And it really is just like the beer bars in Belgium.

I booked a week in advance to take a new project team of 13 people out for a bit of bonding. When we got there on a busy Thursday night they had lost the booking... They got my best "not happy look" and to their credit, they cleared a space, pulled some tables together and somehow fit us in.

We had all gone there for one thing - the bucket of mussels. Some of us had them in a creamy garlic sauce, some in chili sauce, and a couple in Thai coconut milk sauce. All were agreed - delicious! The mussels come served with French fries in a paper cone and "frites sauce" (mayonnaise) on the side and a glass of house wine or beer or soft drink is included in the price.

The atmosphere was great, and somehow eating with a fork and fingers created an informality which meant we were all talking and eating at the same time - a great ice breaker. Of course quaffing a few good Belgian beers helped as well.

The food is good value but the beers are not cheap - - but well worth a try.
