  • For entree,we ordered the Sumac Prawn Cocktail, which came out on a bed of lettuce and cherry tomatoes with thousand island dressing. While nothing special, the prawns were fresh and the dish was tasty.

For mains, my friend ordered the Braised Peking Duck with Porcini Mushrooms. It came out on a rather small bed of mash, the duck was nice and moist and came away from the bone very easily and had a very good flavour. I had the Soft Shell Crab and Scallop Risotto. The soft shell crab was deep fried to crispy perfection and the rice was neither too dry nor too gluggy. Overall one of the best risottos I have ever eaten.

Dessert was Sticky Date & Ginger pudding - not the best pudding ive had but was indeed tasty and well received.

    V
  • Having Just moved to East Perth, my partner and I had been checking out the local cuisine. We had heard that Benson's had fantastic salt and pepper squid so at the very last minute on a wednesday night I walked in and booked for half an hour later. The restaurant manager was lovely and said a table would be available.

We arrived half an hour later to a reserved table (even though it was not a busy night) and greeted by the wait staff, who placed fresh iced water on our table.

We ordered drinks with a trainee who took about 10 minutes to bring them to our table, however we were easy to forgive as she was very friendly and obviously trying her hardest. Shortley after this another waitress came to quote the specials, and then came back to take our order. We ordered the Salty squid as an entree to share, as my partner was ill, I order the Porterhouse Medium- well done and My Partnered order the chilli encrusted Pork.

The Entree came out surprisingly quickly, Because we were sharing we had eaten it very soon after it came out. This was probably the best squid I have tasted, even my partner who isnt a big Calamari fan said it was the best he had ever tried. I did find the mash it was on very salty though.

Our table was cleared of the entree quite quickly and our mains again came out very quick. The portion sizes are not huge but they were very satisfying. My Steak was cooked very well more medium than well done but very tasty. My partners Pork was delicious, with a nice amount of chilli (which meant too spicy for me)

We decided to skip dessert, as the bill was already close to $100.

The manager again was very polite as we left and always addressed me with my first name, which I found to be a nice friendly touch.

Although the meals were fantastic especially the squid. i think $100 for one entree, 2 mains and a drink each would be more appropriate if the interior was more modern and less Bistro like.

Other than that I will go back!!!

  • We arrived a little late for our reservation due to traffic problems and were promptly invited to the bar for a pre-dinner drink. The waiter said that they were running late.

I could soon see why. The open kitchen not only serves the restaurant but also the room service for the hotel.

We waited and enjoyed our drinks and after about 20 minutes were led to our table. Because of the wait we were also offered complimentary garlic bread. It was just the way I like it. Hot, garlicky and crusty.

Service here was very good. The staff were very knowledgeable on their product and were very attentive. The cook time was very long which they were very apologetic about. I think the main factor in this is the room service meals that they also prepare.

Our entree came and was quickly followed by our mains.

The calamari entree was one of the best that I have had. The calamari was very tender and tasty.

For mains I had the lamb with minted mash, while my partner had the steak in pepper sauce.

I highly recommend the lamb. It was divine, cooked to perfection with excellent mashed potatoes.

My partner likes her meat well done and stated that her dish was very good. Personally I can't comment because I find well done meat generally dull.

I did have a taste though and it was a very good cut which was cooked to her specifications and still quite tender. It did drag the food score down a little bit though, the pepper sauce was a little hot but otherwise everything was in order.

We shared the apple tart for desert. This was delightful. Highly recommend it.

Because of the length wait we were offered complimentary tea and coffee. They do make a good mocha. Very chocolatey and I was very satisfied.

What grabbed me best about this restaurant was the service. We never had to pour our own drinks, were asked just the right amount of times if everything was to our satisfaction and the staff admitted to faults before initiating action to make you happy.

The staff appeared to go out of their way to remember hotel guests because I saw many shaking of hands and greetings exchanged between obvious guests and the staff.

I recommend this place and will be returning patronage. After using the Entertainment Card the total bill was a very reasonable $60

  • We walked in without a booking and they were fairly busy, but could seat us in a bit if we waited in the bar. We were fine with having a few drinks first and so we did.

Once we were seated, we ordered salt and pepper calamari and someone had the cream of pumpkin soup for entree. We were also presented with a complimentary Turkish bread and dip plate to apologise for the wait. All of these dishes were delicious, with the stand-out being the calamari.

For mains, I had the surf and turf which was a little disappointing because it was overcooked. Aside from that, it was obviously a nice cut of meat and the prawns were juicy too. I tried my husband's rack of lamb and it was stunning.

The service was impeccable - we were never left without water or wine.

Overall, we were very impressed and will be back. They also take the Entertainment card.

  • We were delighted to have a buffet breakfast at Bensons in East Perth as part of our prize along with a night at the Saville Hotel, thanks to Eating WA. The full buffet, normally priced at $24, includes muesli, fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries and breads, juices, coffee or tea, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, Asian-style noodles, mushrooms, tomatoes, and fried potatoes with capsicum. Everything was yummy, fresh, and of good quality and the atmosphere was very relaxed. The waitress and the cook (who was doing his stuff in an open kitchen right behind the buffet) were both cheerful, there was a fresh breeze through the open windows, and the restaurant itself was comfy and quiet which is a nice change from the bustling noisiness of most cafes.

  • We all went to Bensons of Saville Suites for a quick lunch on Friday to celebrate a college's birthday. The surrounds are although not striking, plush and comfortable, and we were given a nice big table near the concertina windows which I daresay would be very nice opened in the summer. There is a pretty good choice on the lunch menu and most meals are around the $20 mark which is typical of a fine dining establishment such as this. I had the pan fried fish of the day with snake beans and parsley potatoes, which was deliciously flavoured. The fish was served a bit cold though compared to the vegies which were hot. Looking at the other selections, what looked particularly good were the Caesar salad with soft poached egg which had massive slices of chicken and the pancetta chicken with goat's cheese.

Unfortunately for the two people who ordered the steak on Turkish bread, both the steaks were burnt and inedible. One person said their steak came out well done (well, burnt) despite asking for medium and the other said she was not asked how she would like her steak at all. This was a disappointment considering for $5 you could get a delicious juicy and spicy steak sandwich cooked to perfection at a premium deli down the road at Bennett Street.... The steaks were also served on an overlarge bun which was hard to handle and looked unappetising anyway. The staff were polite and they were happy to let us pay individually. Starrsheep whipped out the entertainment card and managed to get the entire meal for free (yippee! Shhhhhhhhhhhh).

Overall, a nice establishment for a quiet, lazy lunch although perhaps a few items on the lunch menu need a bit of adjustment to bring the place up to its gold plate reputation. I say choose the more gourmet items like the fancy salads and stay away from the pub-grub type of food as this appears to be their strength, plus they are more interesting and exciting anyway.

  • went there for the first time for a meal although have been there many times for coffee...we started off with turkish bread which was really good, not over toasted and very tasty...the young ones shared a caesar salad that even Julius would have been happy with...

i ordered the sirloin (medium) which came more rare than medium but was very tasty anyway and for taste was as good as i've had in Australia...it came on a pumpkin mash with green beans which were cooked (or uncooked depending how you looked at it) to perfection...spot on for me anyway..

the wife had the salmon and was still talking about it next day so i assume from that the salmon was pretty good and cooked just right...no. 2 son had duck and as he conveniently 'forgot' to give anybody else a taste i guess he was more than happy with the duck...he certainly didn't leave any...

the delightful Amy had the shank and in her words,
"it was yummy"...however as i'm not a "shanker" myself i'm not quite sure what "yummy" actually meant but as she was obviously pretty happy i can only take it that it was to her satisfaction...

the service was very attentive but not overbearing
and overall the experience was close to perfect...
the prices were middle of the road and for mains were between $18 and $30...

the only complaint i had was that the sirloin steak had been cut in two, not horizontally as my last steak experience elsewhere but so that somebody else had the other half....this annoys the hell out of me...i'd rather have a smaller but complete piece and pay more...it was just like getting half an omelette !!

other than that i can recommend Bensons, it's pretty good value, the food quality is great and the service first class...and not only that, but the coffee is HOT

  • We went for dinner at Bensons in East Perth on Friday night. We had planned to eat at the K Bar --- previously named Kilo-- across the road but the kitchen was closed (it was about 9pm), so we wondered up the road and into Bensons. We had a trainee waitress but she had a great sense of humor and this added to the enjoyment of our meal. I ordered the Duck which was delightful and we found the staff and hence the atmosphere to be very friendly and relaxed. The food was presentation was impeccable, the decor however projected more of a hotel bistro feel instead of a fine dining establishment... the restaurant is located in the Savilles hotel complex.... A place we will be sure to visit again.
