Blue Duck Cafe (The)
Started in 1988 by Kim Gamble, the 'Duck' as it is affectionately called by it's many daily patrons, has served over 4 million coffees in it's time & caters for everyone from beach bums in bathers to beauties in ball gowns !
The Blue Duck Café has an infectiously stunning view at any time of day, whatever the season!
Dawn is unique, as the 'swimmers ', that have patronised the Duck since it's inception, roll in for their early morning coffee & the day awakes across the Indian Ocean. By midday the balcony is full, window tables have been reserved and one of the world's greatest coastlines is basking in the southern sun for all to enjoy a superbly relaxing lunch. Some stay all afternoon to enjoy the Duck's cocktails, settle in and watch the waves roll across the reef as the North Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club wave skiers practise manoeuvres.
Then this sensational outlook provides another unforgettable vista, Rottnest Island turning to silhouette against the horizon as Perth enjoys yet another majestic sunset. This of course is summer, winter is just as magical but more dramatic as the storm clouds blow in, the waves toss, turn and froth and then the sunlight after the rain creates some amazing shades of green across the water.
So as many see it, it is the prefect spot in Perth for any occasion : a birthday breakfast, a relaxing lunch with friends, a business lunch with international visitors or just a romantic evening by the sea watching the sunset. The Blue Duck Café caters for more than this with it's northern function room overlooking the ocean : wedding receptions; birthdays; anniversaries; corporate launches; annual balls; sit down dinners; cocktail parties; special events & more …….
Everyone who visits the Duck becomes absorbed in the ocean, relaxing them and complimented by the modern Australian fare catering for all tastes, great selection of wines and friendly wait service makes for a fantastic dining experience.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week

- My warm chicken salad was nice, a good medium size, but a little too oily for my liking (I think this was due to the olives and sun dried tomatoes not having their oil drained before adding them, on top of the pesto dressing and fried sweet potato - a bit too much).

- Service was okay - we had trouble attracting our waitress's attention (and she happened to be the manager), as she was chatting to some of her friends. We ended up stealing a waitress from another section and she was lovely!

- Worth a try, I'll be back to sample some of their other dishes as I wasn't overly impressed with my salad but I think this place has potential!

- This has been a regular for fifteen years, and the trend has unfortunately been downhill. Prices have been steadily increasing quite cynically for a few years now, pegged to the undeniably glorious location and view. I had the $12.50 Mojito cocktail, which tasted like it had zero Bacardi. I hate that. The food is OK without being special, simple and standard fare. Chorizo pizza was thin and crispy, but a lot of flour still on the base. Kids chicken was a few minuscule strips on a handful of chips. Tandoori chicken was two rather small balls of meat and a bowl of very dry rice. There was no music to interrupt conversation, and service was courteous if a little hard to attract. Buffet breakfasts were once a highlight, but were abandoned a year or so ago for a la carte menu, and the atmosphere suffered as a consequence. As a cafe/restaurant, nothing to shout about. For the location, simply unrivaled in Perth.

I made a booking for Tuesday night at 7.30pm and we took a Japanese guest after a swim at North Cott. I was a little nervous as service at the Blue Duck has not been consistent. We were given the option of sitting on the deck or outside which was nice especially as we had a guest. Of course my guest chose an outside table. The tables were cleared however the umbrellas were not up due to the time of day.
The meals all came together and everyone was happy with their meals. The dishes ordered were the fish of the day, bbq style cajun chicken and beer battered snapper. All were beautiful presented and there were no complaints. Overall the food was a little overpriced for the fare that was served however the ambience made up for that.
The waitress failed to check after a few minutes that everything was ok with our meals. Also our waitress did not refill our water glasses.
Our waitress was attentive after our meals and cleared our plates in time and also provided us time to order desserts and coffees.

Mother Nature put on a beautiful WA sunset for our English visitor and fortunately we had a prime viewing position at this well situated restaurant.
Food could not be faulted nor could the service. We ordered 4 steaks and 1 fish at our table and all came cooked to perfection and amply sized. Coffee and desert were quickly served.
Dining experience was memorable.

Scenery is amazing, was lucky enough to get a balcony table for two for a weekday autumn lunch. The sun shining. Restaurant was already half-full when we entered and filled out quickly by the time we'd finished.
We had the wedges + aioli to start off with, very filling even on its own. Had champagne sunset cocktail, pineapple juice a little too strong in that one for my liking.
For mains I had the roast lamb rack on pumpkin mash with sun-dried tomatoes and olive salad, and my partner had the Japanese spiced salmon. My dish was great, would definitely recommend it but watch out for the oil salad dressing if you're on a diet of sorts. The pumpkin was fantastic. The salmon was done well too, rare in the middle crisp on the outside. Unfortunately we were too full to try their desserts.
Follow up that great view and great food with walking along the beach and you've got a great day out.

Can't fault the view on a perfect autumn day. Had a lovely Verdelho to watch the swimmers by. The chairs - great for sipping cocktails, but awful for eating a substantial meal in. Took a fair while to take our meal orders. We opted for some of their Cajun wedges (whatever happened to just potato skins? They were so much yummier!) with aioli. They were really nice. If you were the sort to have chips/wedges for lunch, they would have sufficed. Just made a change from breads and dips, etc. My mum had the mustard lamb ribs on roast pumpkin mash and I had the Shark Bay prawns with salad. Unfortunate for me there was an ingredient - presumably a herb/spice - in my dish that made me unwell, so we had to leave before sampling their cheese plate.
I have been here before (about 18 months ago) and preferred their menu then to now and know that the dipping and cheese plates are yummy.
I probably won't be back as it gets too hard avoiding herbs/spices (especially when you don't know which one it is)! But that isn't their problem.
