Overall:
Café Karache is one of a small handful of cafes serving typical Malaysian/Singaporean muslim food which we do get cravings now and again. Hence, decided to take my three kids for a bus ride to the city to meet their dad for dinner and late night shopping. (Got tempura rice takeaway from Mr Samurai and the Karache owners did not seem to mind us having it there as I guess they understand that their food is not really suitable for kids).
To order, you’ll have to queue up in this small narrow café and pick your choice of the curries sitting in bainmaries behind the glass counter. Most diners pick a choice of 2 meat & 1 veg with white rice (can have options such as 1 meat/1 veg or 2 veg etc) out of a choice of about 5 different meats and 3 vegies. The food is immediately dished out on a rectangular plate resembling a banana leaf and you pay on the spot.
We had the beef & lamb curry and curry cabbage where although the meat was tender, I’m sad to say that the standard has dropped over the years. The zing to the curry was seriously lacking too. Of those intending to try, the lamb was the better tasting one. The chicken briyani was not a disappointment though. A smallish Maryland piece (thigh & drumstick) grilled in tandoori sauce was very tasty but I felt that the café could have been more generous with the 4 thin pickled cucumbers slices. We also had the teh tarik which is tea with condensed milk. Be warned, very sweet!
Another problem is since the food is pre-cooked; it is hardly warm yet alone hot when I generally like my food piping hot especially in the cooler months. However, we are quite satisfied with the food here and also due to the lack of similar food in Perth; we will still dine here now and again.
