Welcome to Cafe Somerville

Cafe Somerville

Our menu is based on traditional Asian food with an inventive modern twist - bringing together the exotic flavours and ingredients of Asia with the fine produces of Australia.

Eating should be fun and a little adventurous, and we strive to provide enjoyable food and a deliciously hip and sensory dining experience.

Must tries include our Butter Prawns, Guinsess Pork Ribs, Cayenne Chicken and Kapitan Fish Fillets. Guaranteed to bring you back, these dishes are unique and unavailable elsewhere in Perth (to the best of our knowledge).

All food is cooked fresh to order and some waiting time may be inevitable. In the meantime, enjoy a basket of complimentary prawn crackers, have a beer, a glass of wine or your favorite spirit.

Opening Times Weekdays - 12 noon to 10pm. Sat and Sun - 11am to 10pm.

Overall:
Last Tuesday night my girlfriend, Daneka, her parents and I had the pleasure of sampling the amazing food at Café Somerville.

To be completely honest, we were very skeptical of going to a Chinese Restaurant due to bad experiences in the past, but I was pleasantly surprised with Café Somerville.

Locals of Winthrop and areas around; put this cafe on the ‘to do list’, it was seriously a great experience.

As I walked through the doors the first thing I noticed was the three tanks full of fresh barramundi, huge crayfish and some of the biggest crabs I’ve ever seen.

We left the meal selection in the hands of owner Gerard Chia, we had quite the banquet. The Chinese New Year is upon us so Gerard treated us to a traditional dish which is the Salmon Sashimi and Salad ($38). Being from the bush I didn’t realise what the word ‘Sashimi’ meant, I soon found out. Raw fish (Salmon and jelly fish!), I let Daneka try it first. Good response, so I had to give it a go. The unique thing about this salad is that before eating it there is a tradition where you get your chop sticks and toss the salad really high with the people at the table (more mess the better). The higher you toss the salad the more prosperity, longevity and wealth you will receive. I need all the luck I can get, so I didn’t hold back. The salad had some very interesting ingredients other than the fish; it was light and fresh, great for a hot summer’s day.

We had 6 dishes come out for main. The standouts were definitely the Chicken in a Yam Ring ($16.80) (which looked like a birds nest) and the freshly caught Steamed Barramundi with Soy Sauce, Ginger and Spring Onions ($30). Very impressive. Oh and being the country kid I am, I really loved chewing on the Pork Ribs ($14.80), tasty!

Daneka, being a lover of seafood, thought the Butter King Prawns ($21.80) and Spicy Milk Squid ($13.80) were the best. She didn’t save me very many, I had to fight her for them. With all that food, my belly was stretched, although I couldn’t resist a Lynch family favourite – Fried Ice Cream ($4.80). Only bad thing about it was the damage it will do to my skin folds, other than that I’d say ‘please can I have seconds?!’

Café Somerville is Chinese food with a twist, a twist I really enjoyed and most certainly will be back for the Chinese New Year celebrations…I can always do with a bit more luck!

My girlfriend and i went tonight and found it to be most enjoyable. We shared the satay sticks for entree which were delish, then had soup and three dishes for main a roast pork claypot, we ordered a black bean stir fry but they mucked up the order and gave us a pepper beef stir fry .But to their credit they realised the mistake and came straight out and offered to swap it,but we decided to stay with it and it was well worth it. the wine was nice to ,so all in all a great evening out, good food ,good wine & good company all for around $80 i reckon money well spent, will definitely be back.

A good Chinese restaurant that serves authentic Asian food. Prices are great and the quality and presentation of the dishes is always consistent! Service is ok, not fantastic but what you'd expect from a local Chinese restaurant. Restaurant was recently renovated so ambience is much more intimate. Recommend that steamed fish (yes, from a tank), twin egg spinach (salted egg and century egg with spinach) and the chilli beef =)

Hardly a week goes by without me and invited friends visiting Cafe Somerville. The food is excellant and reasonably priced with a large selection of different and exotic foods. It is my restaraunt of choice for all occasions. I find I compare other restaurants by the standard of the food at Cafe Sommerville.

It is BYO so that allows me to take my favourite wines. I recommend it to all and I guarantee once visited you will return again to eat the well prepared and presented dishes Gerard offers.

Take a good wine and savour the Food as life is short and it is one thing you cannot miss out on.
