After sharing some chips and dip (sour cream and hot chili, which either the guy forgot to give us instead of sweet chili, or was pretty much the same as sweet chili) and a couple of beers, my husband ordered the Carnegie's club sandwich and I ordered the spinach gnocchi. My husband said that the sandwich was not outstanding, but not bad either (he asked them to hold the egg, and they did not, and he couldn't get it all off) - all in all, nothing to come back for. I, on the other hand, LOVED the spinach gnocchi (even if it was quite heavy), and it is very rare that I find something vegetarian that isn't bland or not actually vegetarian in Australia. I would order it again if I hadn't eaten all day.
The service was absolutely disgraceful. It was a Saturday or Sunday afternoon (so it was VERY slow - there were about 8 people there, inside AND out), and after we took our seats outside (he insisted we not order at the bar), it took about 30 minutes and my husband going back in to get service.
The ambiance was typical of a CBD pub/restaurant. If you were sitting outside (as we were), you were surrounded by the annoyances of the CBD traffic (motor and foot), but sitting indoors was a bit depressing since it was empty and cavernous. With more people, it might have been cosier.
Overall:
Overall, Carnegie's was a bit on the expensive side (the spinach gnocchi was lovely, but it was not a very "large" portion as indicated, and didn't warrant the $18.50 price tag), though it does shock me how expensive it is to eat out in Australia (versus America) even at McDonalds. In LA or Austin, I would have expected to pay no more than $10 for this same dish. It was a nice place for a late lunch, but the service could have been quicker and they could have gotten the order right.
