Food I have to say was just right there, our entree onion bhaji was crispy and a real delight.

though a bit disappointed with their chicken korma but we were advised well before our order that It's the blandest dish on their menu. But then the goat curry was real treat,,could not stop munching on the meat. And esp their Chicken tikka masala... wow!! have not ever had a thing like that before. The naan bread was o.k though wished it wasn't that closely burnt, but as the waiter said that it is cooked over charcoal I understand the heat is hard to control.

Service:

Service was great. We felt comfortable whole night. All The waiters were very friendly and helpful right through the night. Their attitudes itself created a real atmosphere, working like a pack of hungry wolves trying to poach on attention seeking tables. Great team I thought.

Ambience:

Loved the atmosphere, was really welcoming and darkly colorful. Though I thought they can renovate the place with better chairs and tables. The pictures on the walls give a wonderful insight into the way of life in india.

Overall:
Great establishment.

We ordered the Saffron rice, which was rather bland, I dont know why they charge $5 per person for Saffron rice that tastes like ordinary rice.

Chicken Korma didn't look or taste like Korma at all however it did taste ok, Chicken Tikka Marsala was great and the little bowl left empty, we also had Mixed Vege Curry which was nice and spicy. We ordered the $30 tasting plate as a main as well and this was horrible, I am not sure how old the meat was but everything was dry and this was left almost untouched as noone was game enough to eat a large amount.

Garlic Nann bread was awesome, Cheese Nann not so awesome, I am not sure what kind of cheese they used but it was not very nice, the bread itself was great.

Service:

We had to ask 3 times for our pampadums (spelling?)and dipping sauces, the second time we asked the young watiress just dumped them on the table, without the sauces, so we had to ask for a third time. On a positive note the water bottles were always replaced when empty without having to ask.

Ambience:

Sitting next a damaged wall with, damaged carpet does not make for a very inviting space, however the colourful walls and prints did brighten the place up.

Overall:
Not impressed with the food, there are better Indian places in Perth, just pity not all of them are down the road....

I have eaten here twice now and both times have come away thinking that it is overrated...food is average, expensive..and I think that it is due to the location. The second time we were there was my hubby's birthday and we were sold a bottle of water that was supposed to be Mount Franklin (as listed on the menu), but was actually a very cheap supermarket brand! The service is very average...both times we have had large parties dining at the same time as us and our food has taken ages and we were left with no drinks even though the order was taken. Our food came out with the wrong rice dish...but it was too much effort for us to say anything as we were starving by then! Not sure that I am going to be revisiting.

I must admit that I wasn't looking forward to our lunch here as I did not feel like Indian food on a hot day, but was pleasantly surprised.

The inside was well air conditioned, comfortable and inviting. Service was attentive and friendly. I ordered the tandoori chicken salad from their lunch menu, and a mango lassi. The salad was basically some greens with large pieces of cucumber and tomato on top, and 2 quarter pieces of tandoori chicken and some sauce in a bowl in the middle. It wasn't like a traditional salad but was well presented and the tandoori chicken was delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to returning. My friends all enjoyed their food as well!

I first visited Chutneys Mary’s 2 months ago and have been back since - this one is definitely destined to become a regular haunt.

The décor in the front part is a warm, earthy terracotta and it has a nice buzz inside. Brightly coloured lanterns and vivid photos of India on the walls make it comfortable and welcoming and we were lucky enough both times to have a cosy little table for two near the bar. The back part of the restaurant is a little less warmly decorated (and I really can’t fathom why they would put carpet on the dining room floor in a restaurant) but still pleasant.

The first time I ate there I was starving, so I was really disappointed when the main meals arrived in these little gold bowls that looked like they would barely hold an entrée. Well, these bowls are very deceptive (I call them The Tardis Bowls) and they hold a surprising amount of food. Suffice to say that we were full to bursting and very satisfied by the time we left both times.

We started off both visits with Garlic Naan Bread which was nice and garlicky.

Last nights meals was just delicious - steamed rice, Chicken Korma and Gosht Sagwahla, which were perfect foils for each other. The lamb was cooked in a tomato base with finely chopped spinach and it was mouthwatering - tender, spicy and robust. This went beautifully with the nutty, creamier and more mild base of the Chicken Korma and we enjoyed them both immensely.

The previous visit we tried the Chicken Palak and the Butter Chicken. I am definitely not a fan of the Butter Chicken, the smokey flavour did not appeal at all, but this is really a taste preference. It was very tender and my partner loved it, he polished the lot off with great enjoyment.

The Chicken Palak was recommended by the waitress and was really scrumptious (apparently a staff favorite), again this dish was boneless chicken cooked with finely chopped spinach - I don’t think I could go past ordering this one too many times, it was very yummy.

The service was great the first time, reasonable the second. We had a longer wait the second time for the main meal, but it was a busy Saturday night (with a crowd coming out of the football) and it wasn’t unacceptably long. Our order was taken promptly and the entrée came out quickly, although we had to ask for cutlery.

My one complaint was that on both visits no napkins were provided to us with the entrée. Naan bread is served in one large piece which you need to break apart with your fingers so napkins really are required as your fingers end up covered in garlic butter. Both times I had to get up to get our napkins from the front counter. A little thing, but something that you would think was pretty standard, to have napkins on the tables.

Other than this we loved it and will most definitely be back for more.

What can you say about this place great food, great location, great experience all round. My most recent visit to Chutney Mary’s didn’t disappoint being a fan of Indian food since spending some time in India on a working assignment and being a regular visitor to this restaurant since. Myself and a good friend caught up here as it is a very convenient location and the food is always consistently good. This time round was a week night but the place was still packed and had that bustling vibe and the aromas of indian curries and other spices that you become accustomed to at Chutney Mary’s. We were seated quickly and were able to order drinks which were on our table quite promptly. We ordered the chicken palak which is always a consistent performer and a Ghosht Sahgwalla which was a good mix and this was delivered to our table in even time having started with Naan bread while waiting for the mains to appear. The palak is highly recommended and have had this a few times and is yet to disappoint others worth a look are the chicken 65 and the butter chicken , the rogan josh too is worth a mention but can sometimes be quite hot which is worth noting if really spicey is not your thing. The atmosphere inside is quite vibrant and bustling so its worth considering if the experience you seek is more of an intimate nature, service is good without being spectacular and there is no reason why Chutney Marys won’t continue to be the landmark it has become in the middle of the Subi entertainment precinct.

How disappointing! We arrived at Chutney Mary's for a meal prior to going to the Regal. The show was due to start at 8.00pm and we arrived at 6.20pm to enjoy what we thought would be a leisurely dinner. When the waiter asked if we were going to the theatre we were impressed that the restaurant recognised that timing was important. How sad that we were given our meals at 7.40pm only after complaining and threatening to leave. I found the whole experience expensive and a bit shoddy. The cheapest wine was $34.00 a bottle {nothing flash- I have bought this particular bottle of wine for under $10.00 on special} The curries were flavoursome but certainly nothing to get excited about. I feel that Chutney Mary's are just there to make the most out their theatre patrons on a Saturday night and we certainly won't be going again.

Finally I made it to Chutney Mary's...it's been 1 of those restaurants I've wanted to go to for such a long time...And it lived up to all my expectations!

I went with a couple of friends, we shared a mixed entree plate between 3 of us which had a good selection, we especially enjoyed the Onion Bahji & Lamb cutlets. For main I had the Rogan Josh, my friends had the Masala Scallops & Goat Curry all of which were delicious!

The service was good & the place was packed which says it all!

I will definitely be returning.

Having heard about Chutney Mary's reputation as being an institution of Subiaco cuisine and on many an occasion having longingly passed by this colourful Indian Restaurant, I was thrilled to find out that out group enroot to seeing a show at the Regal theatre would be making a pit-stop beforehand to have an early dinner there. The starrsheep stomach was eager and ready!

First step into the restaurant brought forth a tantalising waft of Indian spices. Good for wetting the appetite but never good for clothing, so give a pass to wearing anything "dry-clean" only unless you want to smell like you've spent the previous night in a tandoor oven the next morning. Being an obviously popular restaurant, with diners spilling forth onto tables outside despite it being a slightly chilly evening (bookings I’d say essential!), I was not surprised to find our party of 11 crammed onto a long table made up of 3 square tables, which would comfortably seat 8; but staff were very helpful in locating extra chairs. In fact I believe it was the staff that made us feel comfortable despite the lack of space – weaving in and out like magicians removing used plates, filling up the water bottles, deftly setting down ordered dishes without disturbing guests or the table layout. 5 out of 5 points for service, the food came out fast and at no point did I see anyone on our table needing to flag a waiter down to "discuss" anything. Two of our group arrived late, but the waitress attended to them immediately and their meals came out only about 5 minutes after everyone else’s. I "tested" (no, it was not because I forgot!) the waitress by asking her for two mango lassi while she was setting out the dinner plates, but lo behold, 5 minutes later and our drinks were there. One slight error though, the waitress brought out a big plate of onion bhaji. "What are they?" someone asked. "I don’t know, who ordered these?" said another. Our friend Peter went one better and took one off the plate and started eating it. Waitress comes over and takes away the onion bhaji out the back. Moments later they magically reappear on the table adjacent to ours. Everyone chuckles at Peter, but he is pleased with his free "delicious" entree.

Starrsheep and Kimmik start off with a mango lassi each. Delicious mango and yoghurt drinks served attractively in a round tumbler with two short straws. Very summery, someone asked if we were having cocktails. After wrestling with my conscience that eating the house special, goat curry, would be "not right" for a Starrsheep, I settled for half a tandoori chicken. It consisted of two pieces of chicken and a mint yoghurt dipping sauce. The chicken was a bit dry, but tasty all the same, with a nice smokey flavour. Kimmik order the chicken palak, chicken pieces served in a rich spinach curry gravy -also a staff favourite it said on the nicely extensive menu. The palak was very flavoursome, a creamy mild curry. This was, as were all the other curries, served on attractive golden bowls (Kimmik notions approval), the rice served in white china bowls and the naan bread in baskets. We ordered the garlic naan bread and a cheese naan. Each piece is generous enough to share between two. Overall I’d say the food was good - fresh, clean and made with good ingredients, but I get the inkling that perhaps it has been a little sanitised for the Western (or Subi!) palate, I think there was something akin to "chicken salt" on my tandoori chicken and the garlic naan reminded me a lot of garlic bread and the cheese naan was filled with cream cheese (delicious, but nagging feeling this not authentic). Out of the large amounts of orders among the 11 people on the table, I did not witness any surprising or novel dishes, so I would say real crowd pleaser, but no "discover something brand new" epiphany to be had here.

Looking around at the surrounds, I make an observation about the tastefulness of the decor - "professionally" mounted scenes of Indian life and culture, clean and tasteful red and yellow paint, no plastic flowers and tacky Indian souvenirs here - so you could say "very Subi". Nice ambience. Not personally my type of scene, but comfortable and pleasant atmosphere.

For a main each, naan bread, rice and the lassi, it was approx $25 each for me and Kimmik, so the price was reasonable for the locale. I would probably prefer to try other Indian restaurants and would not make a special effort to return to Chutney Mary's.... but for the mainstream diner, out for a safe bet on a nice meal in nice surrounds with excellent service, perhaps racking the brain for a crowd-pleaser, I would say this restaurant would be hard for anyone to fault. Starrsheep says: "ewe'll like it!"

I've been to Chutney's several times and it has always been great. I first went when it was a new restaurant and unfortunately the prices have increased since then but the food is still incredible. Definitely the best Indian in Perth. We always order the Malai Kofta and the Butter Chicken when we're there, and of course those delicious mango lassies! The only drawback is how busy it is ALL the time.

Fine dining Indian, was absolutely what I would expect from an Indian Restaurant in Subiaco.
We ordered both the Tandoori and Butter chicken dishes with a side of Garlic Naan - the food was expertly prepared and more than we needed. We accidentally ordered a whole tandoori chicken, which was more than two people could handle (with another dish). I think the dishes have definitely been westernised, but then again I ordered pretty typical dishes for a westerner - I'll try something else next time for something a bit different.
The place looks great and is in an awesome location, right in the heart of Subi. I only took marks off because of the price (although it is Subiaco!) and because the dishes I ordered were not that inspiring or surprising.

Unfortunately was packed and we had to sit outside, should have booked, but that was our only complaint. Great food, found it difficult to choose from the variety. Spicy, but still tasty. Efficient service. Didnt forget us outside. A good experience. Cant wait to go back.
