Food:

We went to meet our kids for a midweek meal. Entrees octopus ok, crocodile was great, chicken meatballs extremely dry, chorizo could have stayed on the hotplate longer. For the mains: pasta gambeiri had prawn shells stuck to the prawns and was so oily my daughter could only eat a third of it, medium steak was well done (very dry) and the fish of the day (snapper) was very bland

Service:

On three different occasions, we went to the bar, the 1st time we were ignored as the 3 girls behind the bar were giggling to a customer, then 2 guys ignored my husband and actually yelled to a female "OY come and serve"

Ambience:

Seemed very nice until we sat for a few hours and realized its still a Midland local......

Overall:
Someone has spent huge dollars on this. Please oversee your staff, very average, clientele (the beer garden looked like mullet heaven, they obviously won't give up their local!)

This has got to be one of my favourite places. Not only is the food delicious but the service is attentive and friendly and the setting intimate.

The meals can take a little while but that is worth it when you know that it is freshly cooked and presented so well.

Being adventurous with a partner that prefers to order conservatively I am able to get a good idea how a restaurant will go with a few staple dishes such as beef fillets and entrées etc.

Every time we have been there the food has been great from the beef fillet to the Kangaroo.

My partner and I particularly enjoy sharing the tasting plate with damper and some fetta and olives. All fresh with the damper piping hot and that delicious tomato relish.

The Kangaroo was fantastic with my partner enjoying the beef fillet. Unfortunately she likes her meat really well done and sent it back.

We were wondering why it was taking a little while to be returned but that mystery soon solved itself. Instead of cooking the already partly eaten steak longer they made her a fresh meal without any complaints at all. I was impressed.

The dessert was fantastic. I love apple crumble and this one didn't disappoint. I think it had a berry of some sort in it but I can't remember of hand. I do know that it was fantastic. Fresh from the oven and piping hot.

I highly recommend this restaurant. The bonus is that that they will also allow you to use your Gold Entertainment Card over and over again. But even without it, it is fantastic and different.

Our Friday evening at the Coolgardie Safe started with a slight hiccup, we were not aware it was BYO only. After a quick dash to the local bottle shop we settled in for our dinner.

The menu is quiet unique and offers a range of Australian dishes, some that are not for the fainthearted. I was actually looking forward to seeing someone order the witjity grubs, but it wasn’t to be.

The restaurant itself looks like it wouldn't be out of place in the Aussie outback, simple decor and unfussy surroundings coupled with a nature soundtrack in the background.

For starters, my date and I ordered the Australian tasting plate. It was wonderfully presented and the waitress explained the contents knowledgably. Never having tried emu before I thought it was delicious as were the marron and the smoked chicken breast, the damper was a nice touch and the relishes were unlike anything I have ever tried, especially the bush tomatoes.

Having tasted the emu my date was looking forward to ordering it for the main, however on this particular night it wasn't on the main menu. We settled for kangaroo and the rib eye steak, both cooked medium rare. The mains were served just as we had devoured most of our tasting plate. My steak was cooked to perfection definitely one of the best I have had, it came with fluffy mash and marron which was equally as delicious. My date wasn't as impressed with the kangaroo admitting it was slightly tough.

We decided against dessert as we were well and truly full we enjoyed our lovely merlot before calling it a night.

I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to escape the typical “modern Australian” cookie cutouts. Don’t let the décor fool you the chef does a fantastic job in delivering a nicely balanced flavorsome meal and as we didn’t have to pay for the huge restaurant wine mark up, it ended up being fairly reasonably priced.

A small warning about the parking situation on Edward St. The council on that particular evening had decided to restrict parking to local traffic only (the signs on a dark evening were virtually impossible to see) leaving us a with an $85 fine....ouch

This place really offers something different - an Australian dining experience, right down to Casey Chambers playing in the background (which does nothing for your digestion) to Aboriginal art on the walls (which does even less for your stomach). The fact that it's set up in what appears to be a very old house, is fairly blandly decorated and you are served by waitresses with strong English accents, is what makes this place so dinky-di bloody ocker.

I agree with the previous review that the crocodile was a little overcooked and the prices are a bit steep for what you get but don’t let that put you off this place. The menu offers witjity grubs, emu, yabbies, you name it. And we were lucky enough to have a glimpse of the new menu that was to be used in January - YOU WONT BELIEVE SOME OF THE GREAT FOOD THEY WILL BE SERVING. The chef there is a chap who has just come over from a top restaurant in Sydney and is keen to make the place work. The new menu reflects a fantastic taste in cuisine and a genuine desire to turn this place around.

This place is strictly BYO (which is great). It is a casual dining experience but it is great to see that Perth finally has a place like this.
