Welcome to Cream

Cream

Cream is a mecca for foodies and locals alike. Warm, relaxed and very smooth best describes Cream's vibe, with hip cocktails, mod-oz fare and a very handsome wine list. Chef owner John Mead and his wife Maria personally designed and conceived Cream based on a restaurant they would most like to dine in, this is apparent in the seventies lounge inspired mood lit interior. Chocolate suede booths, fur lined walls and a funky jazz baseline set the scene for intimate dining with friends.

The menu changes bi-monthly and is based on smart modern comfort food with influences from the Mediterranean, Middle East and Asia. John uses sound classical techniques to transform simply beautiful ingredients into tasty polished food that nourishes the soul. Everything with the exception of the New Norcia Bread is made in-house with passion and care. The wine list includes a reserve list which provides an eclectic selection of food driven local and international wines. Riedel stemware is served with the cellar wines.

From swanky cocktail parties to intimate dinners, the care and attention to detail at Cream is a rare find. John can tailor a superb menu for any occasion.

Cream in East Perth
by Dennis Lillee

One may think a restaurant which is the subject of a critique would put in extra effort when they are aware of the reviewer. This was not the case at Cream of Regal Street East Perth. It is actually not possible because the level of service and the quality of food is exceptional at any time!

We have dined at Cream in the past and were looking forward to our visit with eager anticipation. In fact, we should have returned sooner because the menu changes often and we hadn’t savored all the dishes on the previous menu. This is not saying that the latest menu is in any way inferior. Chef, John Mead offers a very exciting and appealing menu which in my opinion caters for every taste. Whilst the selection is not huge, this is an advantage as it narrows down the complexity of choosing. Even so, the most difficult choice is what not to have! Our son, who is a Chef and introduced us to this restaurant, agrees. He says there is not one dish on the menu which he would not like to try.

The service is always friendly and attentive without hovering or being intrusive and annoying. Our waitress was delightful. The sommelier, Jodi, is very knowledgeable regarding the wine list and made choosing a reasonably priced wine a breeze. The atmosphere is cosy with noise levels a little on the high side. The advantage of this however, is that it encourages the friendly atmosphere as opposed to those quiet restaurants where you could hear a pin drop - along with the neighbouring table’s every word!

Our friends started with the Retro Double Crumbed French Brie, Redcurrant Glaze, Roasted Pear and Rocket Salad ($22.50) and loved it. My wife and I shared a Crispy Fried Salt & Pepper Squid ($22.50) which was delightfully presented and just as scrumptious as it looked. The squid was obviously fresh, tender and cooked to perfection, without dripping in oil as some fried squid can be.

For mains, our friends both chose fish of the day, Salmon on Sweet Potato Mash with Asparagus and Home Made Olive Tapenade. The presentation was a work of art however well worth destroying due to the fact it was a taste sensation. The salmon was moist and perfectly cooked with al dente asparagus.

My wife chose the Asian Spiced Crispy Duck Confit Grilled Mango and Vietnamese Salad ($33.50). The duck was tender and juicy without being greasy. The salad was refreshing and crunchy with a great contrast in texture and taste to the duck. It had a spicy zing to it which the waitress told us was due to the addition of chilli, but it was not spicy hot.

I had Crispy Roasted Pork Belly Caramelised Apple, Leek and Goat’s Fetta Strudel ($36.50). Absolutely delicious!

Dessert was yet another enticement we could not resist. Normally we are not tempted but it was just too hard with this menu.

One of our friends had the Vanilla Brulee with Dark Chocolate Sorbet, again a perfect combination. The other had a beautifully presented Individual Pavlova with Passionfruit Custard and Cointreau-steeped Strawberries. The pavlova had a crunchy outside with melt in the mouth marshmallow texture inside without being sickly sweet, perfectly complimented by the tartness of the passionfruit and sweetness of strawberries. We shared a Puff Pastry Apple Tart with Home Made Caramel Ice Cream. The individual sized tart was light and fluffy and the caramel flavour of the ice cream impeccably complimented the apple.

I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Cream for a wonderful dining experience.

Food:

Went to Cream for the first time on Friday night with the wife. The entree (deep fried squid with Japanese salad) and dessert (pavlova with strawberries) that my wife and I shared were delicious, but we were disappointed with our mains. My wife had a risotto with duck in an orange sauce and I had the pork belly with some sort of strudel. The risotto was salty and I think the orange sauce was overcooked as it left a bitter aftertaste. The pork belly was okay but I didn't like the strudel that accompanied it. It looked more like a huge spring roll rather than a proper strudel. I expected a lot more for the price we paid.

Service:

The service was great even with the restaurant being full. Our food were brought to our table promptly and our drinks were refilled when asked.

Ambience:

We were fairly impressed with the decor. It alluded cool, hip and sexy without being over the top.

Overall:
I would still recommend this place even of what I said above. Maybe I'm too picky :)

I went here for a friend's birthday two years ago and had very fond memories of the place. After such a long time I decided a revisit was in order. However, in the interim I visited many other top notch restaurants around Perth and I am sorry to say that I was a little disappointed the second time around.

Don't get me wrong, Cream has all the things you would expect in a great restaurant. Good food and wine, class, ambiance and it is very intimate. However, in a day when rotating, seasonal menus are all the way to go, Cream's menu had hardly changed in the two years. We were looked after by the same waiter all night which was good, except that so were about 7 other tables and as a result we were constantly asking for re-tops of our water. Food also took a while to arrive, but thankfully we were not ravenous and did not mind the wait.

The food was great, with lovely hot fresh bread to begin with. We tried their pate which was also great. I had gnocchi as a main. When it came out I thought the serving size was a little small but in the end I was thankful as I was full enough. Unlike your typical gnocchi, this 'handmade' one was so light it felt like I was eating marshmallows. Desert was 'individual chocolate self-saucing pudding' and self saucing it was! In the end for five people sharing bread, olives and pate` as a starter, mains, deserts, two beers, two mid-range bottles of wine and a hot chocolate the bill came to $380. I will let you decide on it's value for money.

This place rocks! :-)

As there are many great reviews for this restaurant I wont go into too much detail but the food, service and atmosphere were all top notch.

Particular highlights of the meal were the entree figs (a special) that had been cooked with goat cheese and wrapped in prosciutto..very rich and verrry good :-)

The pork belly/strudel main was delicious also, again quite a rich dish but each mouthful was a delight to the tastebuds!

The espresso martinis are also very good...

Im looking forward to returning here soon!

What an excellent night! It was a pretty special occasion to us (2 birthdays and a special anniversary), so we wanted something to mark the occasion with some close friends. We had been before, but none of our friends had, and the night lived up to our expectations (and more). It was so much fun watching our friends experience the things that make the place so cool and fun, and listen to the ooh's and aah's as they tried the awesome food.

The service on the night was pretty...God, what's another word for special. The staff attended to everything we needed without ever being overbearing, and occasionally joined in our fun. Our (French?) waiter for the night was playful and fun, but absolutely professional at all times - a difficult balance to achieve.

The food on the night was nothing short of perfect. Not only for us, but for all our friends. All four of the guys had the baby beef, and all could not believe that you only needed a fork to eat it with. It is unbelievable how tender and tasty it is.

Most girls had the chicken, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Another hit was the pate starter. Several of our party were not fans of pate, but everybody thoroughly enjoyed it once they tried a sample.

We took our time over dinner, and it was a very full night. I especially recommend the Espresso Martini, and my wife loves the Mojito's.

I can sincerely recommend Cream for a special event or romantic evening.

Once inside we felt at ease and looked after. Staff was amazingly friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We never felt waited on or hovered over, the staff just seemed to be there when needed.

The food was fantastic. We had warmed bread, olives, pate and cheese as an entree and it was a very large portion and tasted beautiful.

For mains I had the pork belly and strudel, my fellow diner had a beef dish which literally fell apart when touched. Everything was presented well and tasted great.

We had a cocktail each, my friends was suggested by the waitress and she enjoyed it thoroughly. I had an espresso martini and it was well presented and tasted as good as I've had before.

Everything about this place screamed class and the service and food were some of the best I've experienced. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone I know.

As soon as i walked in the door i was impressed. The place has a great feel about it that was kind of sexy. The night only got better...service was great and the food was amazing. My husband described his meal of 'braised baby beef' as the best piece of meat he had ever encountered. If there are any guys reading this, i suggest you take your girl here and you will be in her good books for at least a week!!

Overall:
This was my second visit to Cream. I was bowled over in my first visit which was about a year ago now, and so I was pleased that the service and ambience had been maintained to the high standard that I remembered. Unlike other reviewers, we did not have to wait a very long time between our mains and dessert, on the contrary we had to ask our waitress to hold off in ordering our dessert so that we would have extra time to recover from our gorgeous mains. My partner and I had the lamb shank tagliatelle (which truly melted in the mouth) and the pork belly. The lamb dish was really rich and in spite of looking that large on the plate, the serve was deceptively filling and rich. The pork belly was crisp on top and gooey and moist (such a sinful cut of meat) underneath: perfectly cooked in my opinion. The feta, leek and apple strudel was rather sweet and I would advise anyone ordering this dish to also order an accompanying side of steamed veggies. You know a restaurant is good when even the sides are perfectly cooked: the veggies were steamed and not boiled (and passed off as steamed) as I have experienced in other places.

For dessert we ended up having a raspberry absolute sorbet and limoncello sorbet as we were just too full to have more. Saying that we were so tempted by the pistachio crème brulee as another table had it and it looked divine.

This place really is the cream of the crop - excuse the pun. As stated earlier our service was impeccable, the waitress was knowledgeable, attentive but not too intrusive. Another recommendation is the Riesling from the reserve list - at only $45 a bottle it is a really good drop, and dry as stated!
I would recommend this restaurant to couples on a date or maybe for small groups...I think the place works better on an intimate level. The decor is plush and really quite sensual, so definitely the place to go with someone special!

This fantastic place gets reviewed fairly frequently on this site, so I won't go into much detail this time. Like most other visitors I agree - the food is sensational!

The standout for me this time was (my mothers) pistachio brulee - light yet rich with a slight marzipan / almond note plus the almost bitter burnt sugar on the top and combined with decadent dark chocolate sorbet -yum. The home-made icecream is great too - obviously made with a true 'custard base' it is almost eggy and may be a little different for some people. The mains are all fantastic, and for a truly fantastic entree try the crumbed brie with roast pear salad - one of those dishes that combines different tastes and textures to perfection.

Like the last reviewer we did have a long wait between our mains and dessert - and at one point were about to cancel the order and leave - so glad we didn't though. Other than that, the service was prompt, friendly and informative.

I love the ambience in this place - the bar at the front is elegant and darkly inviting, the fur on the walls is sensuous and unusual and the dim lighting makes the atmosphere intimate and warm.

It's not cheap, and neither are the servings huge, but you should definitely sample at least 2 courses (plus try a little of your companions food!), and ideally allow for a cocktail too as they're great.

Well I had read a lot about this place and after a few false starts finally managed to grace Cream with my presence. Tucked away in non descript part of East Perth the place was a lot smaller than I expected.

I have to commend the maitre de on her commitment to service. With the Cream being closed during the week I attempted to make the booking via the answering machine and true to her word I was phoned back the very next afternoon and informed of my options.

A couple of points point worthy of note for first time Creamers. One there are two seatings for dinner, an early and a late, taking the early option means you are expected to leave by 20:00. Two it can be quite noisy, in a good way, there is buzz of enjoyment in the place, but you may have to yell at your date every now and again.

Ok food time. The last time I had food this good I was in Paris - simple as that. Everything was cooked to perfection and made the tastebuds perform like 3 years olds at the Royal Show.
The menu is short and succinct but what is on there is pure quality.

Although full, I had to go the extra mile and force myself into the desert menu. My goodness, the sorbet and ice creams were on a par with the mains.

Service was brisk and pleasant at Cream, I did however frown a little when my $160 a bottle vintage Billecart -Salmon was being frothed over the table a little to liberally but hey play with bubbles die by bubbles.

So in summary just Go Eat Enjoy

I simply had to revisit this restaurant to confirm it's standing in my mind as Perth's best restaurant! I didn't really need an excuse to visit this place with my friends, any excuse would have done!!!

The night began with a delightful mojito cocktail, just a little too sweet for my liking but otherwise perfectly balanced, a great refreshing start to a balmy summer evening of merriment!

We managed to score a cosy booth seat at the back of the restaurant. If you can book yourselves one of the candle-lit booth seats, it's well worth the intimate experience.

To begin our gastronomical journey, we indulged in a tasting plate laid out with chicken liver parfait, onion jam, gourmet olives and dipping oil with crusty French roll slices. The parfait was so delicious and creamy, washed down with Taltarni Sparkling (one treasure of many on the extensive wine list).

This was followed by my all time favourite dish of the night being the delicately fried, quality brie cheese on a bed of rocket scattered with slithers of sweet Swiss pear. The taste sensations caused by this harmonious combination of flavours was an unexpected treat to my taste buds! We also had the Blue Manna Crab & Chicken Spring Rolls with Thai Salad & Dipping Sauce ($23.50).

For mains, I chose the Asian Spiced Crispy Duck Leg Confit, Grilled Mango & Vietnamese Salad ($33.50). I love to order duck when I eat out. The duck flavours, once again, caused a party in my mouth. However, I found the duck to be just a little too dry. The salad and chilli infused dressing was perfectly matched to the duck, a wonderful meal! Other friends had the slow-cooked beef and the hand-made gnocchi. I tried the gnocchi and, let me tell you, this is the most divine example of gnocchi I have ever encountered in Perth! These soft little Italian pillows of heaven will have you floating on clouds!

To complete my journey, I had the Pistachio Crème Brulee with Cuban Dark Chocolate Sorbet ($14.50). The brulee is green in colour and topped with cracked toffee. Yum! A friend had the moist chocolate cupcake with the oozy lindt chocolate nestled in the middle.

The total cost of our meal was about $100 each (including starters, entrees, mains, dessert, alcohol and coffees).

Cream never, ever disappoints. The food is world class, the service friendly. If they keep up these exceptional standards, I will be forced to keep going back again and again and again and again and again and again........In fact, I might just move in there!

A fantastic restaurant and overall experience. We went out for a mid week meal and the food was absolutely exquisite.

The restaurant is darkly lit and very atmospheric, if you're heading there on a romantic evening - try to book one of the two booths at the back, they looked like the perfect place for 2 to 4 people to share an intimate meal.

The service was hard to fault with the only problems being that there was only 2 wait staff and therefore it was hard for them to be attentive to everyone. However they were most courteous and managed to keep your water glass full most of the time, etc.

We started out with crab & chicken spring rolls and Turkish bread with dips, the spring rolls were done perfectly with a really enjoyable balance of flavour.

For mains we shared the crispy roasted pork belly and slow roasted breast of free range chicken. Both were beautiful with the highlights being the delicious pork crackling with the pork and the smooth mashed potato with the chicken.

Combined with a lovely bottle of New Zealand White and it was one of the best meals we have ever had in Perth. Highly recommended!

OH.MY.GOD. I have just discovered the best restaurant in Perth!!! My Hubby surprised me by taking me out to dinner at Cream. I would rate it the best restaurant I have been to in Perth for the last couple of years!

The ambience was warm and funky. Dimly lit, groovy decor, funky background music. Couldn't get past the red shag-pile walls! Very retro.

The service was impeccable! The waitresses were lovely and friendly and prompt. We were asked if we wanted more sparkling or red wine after we finished our glasses (unlike other places that leave you hanging for drinks).

We shared the entree - A delightful combination of flavours. Crisp and tender squid on a bed of sliced mandarin, fennel, baby spinach leaves and flavoursome aioli sauce drizzled over the top. No flavours were over-powering; all flavours completely complimented one another.

For mains, I had the fish special - a tender piece of snapper with crispy, tasty skin atop a portion of garlic mash potato with sautéed fennel and sauces on the plate. Not one thing I could fault.

Hubby had a slow-cooked baby beef on horseradish mash, green pea puree and caramelised beets. He was really impressed with his meal, too (which is great, because he's such a picky eater!).

I was tempted by dessert and indulged in the orange and almond pudding with caramel icecream. It was lovely, but nothing to really write home about. Serving was small, but then I think that was appropriate because I was rather full by then and didn't even finish my dessert!

All up it cost us about $150, not bad considering we had a couple of red wines, a couple of sparklings, one shared entree, two mains, one dessert and a coffee. Everything was top quality - we will DEFINITELY be going back!!!!!

Oodles of dark velvet and luxurious textiles make this a funky retro lo-fi restaurant with great atmosphere. There is a quaint little lounge/bar at the front of this small restaurant which is ideal for pre-dinner drinks/cocktails. Whilst it's not fine dining it's definitely up-market casual.

The menu (for my liking) is a little too small (maybe 6 meal choices in total) with no vegetarian dishes. Having said that, the food we did sample was all delicious with a Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Asian style.

The wine list is an interesting (expensive) mix of local and European wines.

Service, sadly, was on the inattentive side. This is great when you want to be left alone, but a little frustrating when you'd like to be looked after. Especially given there were only few people in the restaurant on the night we went. Unfortunately I have had colleagues who have experienced the same poor service on their visits to Cream.

In my opinion Cream falls into the 'too cool for school' category, in that they rely too heavily on their good food and funky ambiance and not enough on service. Given their higher than average prices this is an area I’d expect them to excel at.

Revisit-a-bility 7/10 (if they lifted their service)

Everyone really enjoyed their meals, however I asked for my baby beef to be cooked m/r but the beef was slow cooked so not cooked to order as suggested. If I had of known this I wouldnt have ordered the dish.

I might go back again...but if you havent been before i think you should try it out!!

What a little gem! I was happily surprised to discover Perth's best kept secret last Saturday night. Looking for a restaurant to take out my sister-in-law and her husband, we happened on this funky, sexy spot perchance and ended up having one of the best experiences in quite a while.

My rellies were up from the south and we wanted to show them a good time. We went the whole hog starting with cocktails then bread and pate (divine) for starters. For entrees we had the calamari, brie (my choice) and soup. Then over a nice bottle of red (Margaret River variety) we chose the wild boar pasta, pork, lamb and I had baby beef - it was so tender and definitely the best dish of the evening (apart from the pate)!

To finish off we had some yummy desserts and even managed some liqueur coffees. What can I say we were so enjoying our meal and the ambiance that we didn't want to leave?

The restaurant is pleasantly lit, great for intimate dinners or group gatherings, and it seems to draw an eclectic group of funky people.

The staff were attentive but not overbearing (don't you just hate it when they ask you how your meal is and you have a mouthful of food!) Thank you Rebecca for great, friendly unobtrusive service.

Overall I highly recommend this restaurant the whole dining experience was very enjoyable and relaxed with high quality food.

cheers
Michelle

This is my mine and my husbands favourite restaurant. We discovered it by accident Dec 04 and have been dining there ever since. I always order the fish of the day because it is always absolutely beautiful to eat and the prices are not over the top but the taste is! I also love the crispy squid and the wasabi coated scallops. I find the service to be attentive without being obtrusive. If you want a nice evening out with someone special this is very much the place to go.

Cream is located in a quiet spot in East Perth. After a little difficulty finding the entrance (tip: Look for the doormat..)we finally went in side and were immediately impressed with the funky, sexy decor of this modern restaurant. Dim lighting and tea light candles set a sultry mood and the food didn't disappoint, I ordered a lovely bottle of Italian Wine - and the fish of the day, which was Tasmanian Salmon on baby potatoes with a side serve of vegetables sprinkled with cottage cheese. The salmon was delightful and melted in my mouth. The service was friendly and fast, this is definitely a restaurant to woo and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience.
