Overall:
At last! The search for a top Italian BYO is over!
Da Bruno's is a converted house on Beaufort Street - tucked away just before the Civic Hotel as you head out of town. Neither our guests nor our taxi driver could find it first go, so keep your eyes out. The premises are tastefully and thoughtfully furnished and lit, with heavy curtains, pictures and statues on pedestals providing visual appeal.
There is also a front courtyard area for al fresco dining in warmer weather.
I didn't realise (as I didn't make the booking - which you may need to do about 3 weeks in advance, as this is a heavily-patronised place), but this is effectively 'fine dining' without the liquor licence (and is all the better for that). The cutlery, crockery and napery are all quality, and so is the majority of the glassware.
The service is professional yet warm and friendly. The menu at first seems quite limited (4 or 5 entrees, 6 or 7 mains) and is chalked up on large blackboards fixed to the walls. However, when the waiting staff take you through the menu, you realise that considerable thought and design has been put into each of the menu items, and I'd be surprised if you can't find something you like (except perhaps vegetarian options for mains).
The 'primi' (entrees) were mostly pasta based, and included superb ricotta and porcini mushroom pillows with a walnut pesto sauce, and a two-cheese gnocchi, along with 2-3 other options.
The 'secondi' (mains) included rabbit, dhufish, lamb, beef, spatchcock (no chicken), and prawns, all prepared with carefully matched crusts, reductions, etc.
Desserts are also well thought out, with 6 or so mouthwatering options. I didn't think I would get to dessert, but I'm glad I made the effort.
Overall, the dishes appear to be a carefully crafted blend of flavours and textures, and I was very pleasantly surprised to find such attention to detail in a BYO in Inglewood!
Price aren't cheap ($20-25 entrees, mains $30-40) but you really get what you pay for. Highly recommended, especially for a more intimate dinner for 2 or 4 people, rather than a crowd (although they do cater for larger groups, too). Booking in advance is also highly recommended.
