RAVENOUS

Food:

I dont know what has happened since the last reviewers have eaten here but our 4 meals were middling to poor, lamb shanks had no flavour and looked like they had been boiled in water( wheres the mashed potato? boiled potato cut in half), pork ribs were dry, vegetables overcooked, steak was ok and battered fish was fair but looked like nile perch

Service:

ok floors and tables could have been checked for cleanliness

Ambience:

good old fashioned pub ambience

Overall:
would have expected a better from them maybe this was an off night ?

Do your taste buds a favour and eat here, anything you pick on the menu will be the best thing you have tasted in ages, fills you up where you struggle to fit in one of the beautiful desserts. I had the lasagne one night (fantastic) My husband had lamb shanks and all you had to do was shake the plate and all the meat fell off the bone and the gravy was so so tasty. All the vegies and salads are so fresh. Another night I had the earl pie and pint. The chunks of meat were huge, gravy and pastry yummo. I managed to squeeze in a sticky date pudding and that was to die for.

Friendly fast service.

Homely, welcoming, comfortable.

Overall:
We go to Albany every year and the only place we eat at is now the Earl of Spencer which we have done so the past 2 years. We don't go anywhere else because we don't want to be disappointed, because you can't get any better meals anywhere else. No matter what you order you will think your taste buds have died and gone to heaven. The prices are very affordable for the huge servings you get. I take my hat off to the cooks. When we sit down to order my husband asks me what I want and I say THE COOK

My husband had the double burger and said it was the best burger he had had for years. I had the salt and pepper squid on salad which just melted in my mouth it was so fresh. The salad also was very fresh and there was plenty of it. We also ordered 2 kids meals and it was nice to see for once a plate not covered totally in chips. There was fish fingers, enough chips and also some grated carrot, cheese and lettuce.

Just fabulous. It was a busy night and being the holidays there were plenty of full tables. Bar staff were attentive and quick as well as the wait staff who gave us just enough time to decide and regularly checked to see if there was anything we needed.

This is by far one of the best pubs in WA. It is tucked away from the main thoroughfare and is trully a hidden gem. A good mix of locals and tourists. Live music too whcih was just perfect.

Overall:
A definite find! Would not have heard about it unless it was recommended by a local. If you can, try and book a table in the beer garden. Definately a traditional pub with a great atmosphere, serving good quality food and catering for all crowds. Something rare in WA.

I'm giving this 2 stars because my husband and I each enjoyed about half of our meals. For starters, he ordered the hot buffalo chicken wings ($6.95) & I ordered the vegetarian spring rolls (also $6.95). What irked both of us (to begin with) were the portion sizes. The starters were the same price, but his contained 10 large chicken wings and mine contained 4 tiny spring rolls, or what most places would advertise as mini-spring rolls. His chicken wings were pink, my spring rolls were delicious.

For mains, he had a delicious chicken, bacon and cheese burger ($16.95), but again, WAY too big. I paid $21.95 for a tiny portion of eggplant parmigiana with cheese that wasn't really melted (more congealed).

Service:

The barman (who took the order at our table) seemed more concerned with chatting with the locals than ever checking on us, and the female (not sure what she did) seemed disgruntled. When I told them about the hair, she said, "Oh. Sorry about that." She didn't offer a refund or another meal.

The physical ambiance of the pub/restaurant was nice. The beer garden probably would have been nicer if it hadn't been a cold, rainy day at the end of July, but it was nice. The people, however, left something to be desired. There was a definite, "Y'all ain't from 'round here," look that we got.

Overall:
Overall, the Earl of Spencer was a disappointing end to an otherwise amazing day (we had three treatments at Mt. Romance, which even my "I only used Imperial Leather soap and never use girly stuff like lotion" husband enjoyed). We had researched where to eat in Albany beforehand, & were really looking forward to the Earl of Spencer. Luckily, I made it back to where we were staying & out of the cab before the hairy, congealed eggplant parmigiana came back up. I loved those spring rolls though.

Good range of better than average pub grub.

Lamb shanks ($24) very tender and tasty but let down by thin gravy and undercooked spuds.
Brilliant steak and guiness pie (with pint of guinness thrown in). Masses of tender meat under a multi-storey lid of flaky puff pastry. Other versions include steak and mushroom and steak and leek.
Lasagne was standard but beer battered fish was a top dish.

Friendly at the bar. Made a bit of a dent in the 15 imported beers, including a couple of Scottish ales.

Ambience:

Warm, welcoming country pub with fires inside and lovely beer garden outside. Too cold in mid July though.

Overall:
Well worth adding to the Albany places worth visiting,
