Ess Bar Subiaco
The Ess Bar situated within the Subiaco Village on Hay Street offers a vibrant alternative to the Subiaco bar and restaurant scene. Ess Bar was fully refurbished in December 2006 to reflect the more sophisticated needs of Subiaco. The fit out was based on Melbourne and Sydney bars and offers a contemporary multi use venue with an open and relaxed atmosphere. Ess Bar is fully air-conditioned and incorporates three main areas: the dining room, chill out lounge bar and snug/function room. The dining area seats up to 100 guests, offering booths and quality tables and chairs for al a carte or tapas style dining. The lounge provides tables, couches and low modern "poufee" seating. This area is cleared on Friday's and Saturday's to provide room for bands such as Peace, Love & All That Stuff, Dr Bogus, and Back Beat to play in.

- We visited Ess Bar on a Friday night. We started with a "lazy tapas" plate to share which whilst nice, I thought it was overpriced for what it was. I think they could have had a selection of their own tapas for this platter and I wouldn't have minded the cost of it, but it was really just olives, fetta, dips and bread. I had the risotto for mains which was tasty but I didn't think it needed the brocollini and other shrubbery. My fiance had the chicken tagine and he said the chicken was beautiful and tender but there was way too many chickpeas. Dessert was extremely small for the price. I actually was ok with the size of it (it was a cheesecake) but would expect to pay around $6 not $16.

- Service was pretty good during the meal. We were offered drinks right at the start and the cocktail I wanted wasn't on the list but the waitress had the bartender make one up similar - great tasting too. Tried to get someone's attention for the bill but gave up and ended up going to the counter.

- It was a Friday night and basically a pub but even still it was extremely noisy. The two of us found it very difficult to hear ourselves speak. Perhaps a bit further away from the bar would have been better. Decor was fun.

- I think if you had a big group and wanted a fun night out this place would be ok. The pints were really reasonably priced and food was tasty. I wouldn't be back for an intimate dinner for two anytime soon though!

- We shared 6 tapas dishes between 3 people, and all of it was fantastic. Some dishes we had were the grilled lamb loins, cajun barramundi, duck spring rolls and chilli beef nachos. They were all very impressive, and also very well priced.

- The bar is quite large, with a stage for live music and a casual front bar, and the large dining room toward the back. It is quite modern and slick, and has a really good feel to it Again, really impressive.

- We were really pleased with the Ess Bar, and will definitely be back. It is unfortunate it isnt located on Hay St directly, as it would no doubt catch the eye and be more popular. Highly recommended!

- The food we ordered were beautifully presented and good serving portions for this day and age of better restaurants. We enjoyed the food.

- My partner and I had found the service to be very poor from most of the wait staff. There were no smiles or attentiveness to our table which spoiled our night unfortunately. Quite disappointing for Subi standards.

- Restaurant was wonderfully decorated with nice lighting and furniture suited the Subi lifestyle as you'd expect. The live band set the mood for the dimmed light restaurant, good crowd to boot.

- If the food was disappointing, I'd suggest to black list this restaurant all together, but if diners aren't in for the service then it's a place to go.

- The garlic bread came with cheese strips melted over the top which we didn't like. I was disapointed that my choice of meal was unavailable as it turned out I had been given an old specials menu. Instead I had the Char Grilled Beef Fillet served with mushroom cream sauce served on fetta, thyme and potato roesti. The Fillet was good quality meat and cooked to my liking. Overall the meal was very nice but not something we would return especially for (when there are so many fabulous restaurants to try in Perth!).

A friend and I came here for lunch on a Sunday as we have been meaning to try it out for ages. It didn't disappoint however it was very quiet as the restaurant was nearly empty. I wonder how they can afford to pay the staff with Sunday wages with only a couple of diners in attendance?
Our waiter was very attentive. (perhaps as we were only one of two tables occupied), and the food was reasonably priced for lunch and enjoyable. I would prefer a few more patrons in attendance for mood and ambience but perhaps it is more an evening place to go.
I hope it does stick around.

I have walked a couple of times past this place and thought that we should try it out as the decor is speaks out and is just fantastic.
We were there on a Saturday night. There were a couple of birthdays being celebrated so the noise level was high.
As soon as we had ordered our drinks we were asked another two times by different waiters if we would like any drinks, which kind of took us by surprise ...
My wife and I both ordered the chicken Caesar salad which we both enjoyed, few people had ordered the lamb which looked impressive, someone ordered the fillo parcel which was quite close to being burnt and hidden under a pile of greens, and the other chose the risotto which he exclaimed was quite filling.
Overall i guess it was a good experience as I liked the portion sizes and the quality of the food.

- Ess Bar is a great place for a lunch time catch up, can thoroughly recommend the tasting plate, service is fantastic but would recommend booking on Fridays. Prices are reasonable and a good selection of wines.
