Flutes Restaurant at the Brookland Valley Vineyard was the perfect place to spend our relaxed Easter Saturday lunch in Margaret River. The weather was beautiful! A soft cool breeze and a magical sunny blue sky made it the perfect day to be seated on the deck overlooking the water with views of the wild birds and swans. I was definitely impressed (and we had only just sat down) and thus knew that we would be in for a treat!

Entrée’s

Charcuterie Plate - $24

With 4 (self rated) coinesseurs of food and so many great choices, it was difficult to select just one entrée so we chose the tasting plate (Charcuterie Plate $24) consisting of venison and wild mushroom terrine, grilled chorizo, venison ham, sundried tomato, chicken liver pate with red wine jelly, marinated fetta and sour dough crisps.  This dish was excellent value as there was more than enough for all four of us to chew over for some time.

Standouts in this dish were definitely the crunchy grilled chorizo, sliced lengthways which was a nice touch; the chicken liver pate (which was in fact the best pate I have eaten in a very long time and the red wine jelly atop was full of berry fruit flavours – really good); the fetta was great quality and was drizzled with a grassy rocket oil; and the venison ham was light, tasty and went well with the sundried tomato and everything else on the plate.

Japanese Style Prawns and Soba Noodle Salad - $24.50

Next we decided to share the Japanese Style Prawns and Soba Noodle Salad - $24.50, which consisted of poached tiger prawns, soba noodles, pickle ginger and radish, with seaweed tossed in a wasabi dressing. The flavours in this dish were quite simple. The prawns were succulent and perfectly cooked and I loved the addition of the pickled ginger as the whole dish imparted a delicate yet unobtrusive Japanese flavour. It really wet my appetite and left me anticipating my next dish, without leaving any overpowering and lingering flavours in my palette.

Mains

Confit duck leg with wild mushroom risotto

Upon hearing about this duck special from our lovely waiter I knew that this was definitely the main course for me. Wow is the only word I can describe for this magnificent dish. The duck literally fell off the bone and melted in my mouth! The rich and creamy wild mushroom risotto paired wonderfully with the flavours of the duck to make each and every mouthful a delight! I believe the rest of the table were cursed with ‘food envy’ upon tasting my duck, however this dish was quite rich so thankfully I was able to handle it! I was surprised that it was a rather substantial serving as it left me with almost no room at all for dessert (however after almost cleaning my plate from the deliciousness before me I did somehow manage!)

Char Siu Duck Magret - $36

Rod was very impressed with the Asian influenced Char Siu Duck Magret - $36 which sat on stir-fried shitake mushrooms, coriander, ginger and pak choy with udon noodles. (I had a little taster and the duck meat was very tender and juicy. The fresh Asian flavours permeated the meat really nicely).

Amelia park Lamb Rack – $36

Both Scott and Carol went for the Amelia park Lamb Rack – $36 which rested on polenta with blistered tomatoes, caper, olive, spinach and confit garlic. Lucky me also had a little taster of this dish, which I can only describe as a great example for perfectly cooked and juicy tender lamb, marrying nicely with the rich garlic, tomato and olive flavours. Quite notably the polenta was cooked just right (which can at times be tricky for some).

Homemade potato wedges with preserved lime aioli - $8

On the side we chose the Crisp fried pumpkin salad with coconut dressing, pear and pistachios - $15, the Rocket, apple, brie and walnut salad - $12.5 and the Homemade potato wedges with preserved lime aioli - $8. The salads were lovely and fresh with good quality ingredients. The wedges were delicious! Probably the best I have ever tasted. So much so, that I had to ask what potatoes they had used (and yes my assumptions were correct – they had used Royal Blue potatoes which I find to be the tastiest potatoes I have cooked with to date). The wedges tasted almost as though they were flavoured by some kind of meat dripping. However I was assured they were cooked in normal fresh cooking oil – it was just the quality of the potatoes that made these wedges really stand out! They were so good, so tasty and so nice and crunchy – I was raving about them even after we got home and would even go back to Flutes just for the wedges! (I am not even really that partial to wedges which is strange)!

Desserts

Finally onto desserts!

Pecan and Macadamia nut Pie, Chocolate anglaise and vanilla ice cream $13

Again we chose to share our desserts. By this time we really didn’t even need anything further, it was merely our basic greedy instincts which drove us to our desserts. Firstly we shared the Pecan and Macadamia nut Pie, Chocolate anglaise and vanilla ice cream $13. The pie had lovely maple and pecan flavours in a sweet short crust pastry, indulgently dressed with dollops of whipped cream, strawberries and a drizzle of chocolate anglaise. Yummo.

Gourmandise – mango brulee, apple crumble, tiramisu - $15

Finally we had the tasting dessert plate (Gourmandise $15) (a great touch and such a good idea to share desserts) which consisted of mango brulee, apple crumble and tiramisu. The standout here was the yummy apple crumble, but overall for desserts I would say the pecan tart was the most delicious!

The bill was very reasonable for a table of four, especially considering we didn’t hold back on anything and also consumed a bottle of sparkling and two bottles of wine, with digestives after our meal. I was even able to whip out our shiny new EatingWA VIP Card to receive 25% discount!

Overall we enjoyed some fantastic food in an extremely relaxed atmosphere whilst being attentively served by knowledgeable and friendly staff. The perfect day out for me and I would certainly love to do it again sometime soon! Thanks to Executive Chef Francois Morvan and Craig at Flutes for looking after us so well!

Flutes is usually a favourite lunch spot for us whenever we are in the South West. This time did not disappoint us. The last time we were there was prior to a refurbishment and I remembered being rather disappointed by the food. We had lamb shanks done with a Middle Eastern influence with dates and oranges on Israeli cous cous. It was divine, the tender meat literally falling off the bone in gelatinous sticky chunks. Another relative ordered the beef cheeks and it was a robust flavoured dish, you could really taste the wine used in cooking it. The meat was so tender, my son relished it (he normally will only eat meat off a stick, novelty factor). My husband ordered the duck risotto. It was tasty, creamy without being over rich, the duck was tender without being gamey. It is a dish for people for huge appetites as it was really filling. Others on our table ordered the fettuccine with prawns and were very pleased with their dish. Our children had lamb French chops on mash. My son ate up all his mash but did not touch the chops. They were too hard for him so he ate the meat off my shanks and some of the beef cheek and as usual, us parents ended up eating his chops!! Our relatives from abroad enjoyed the atmosphere. Unfortunately, this is one place that is not suitable for very active children under 5 years of age.

A waiter trying to relate to my brother and his wife who were childless made a rather snide comment about "children, who would have them” which rather offended me who overheard him. We shrugged it off but this added a sour note to our enjoyment of our meal.

Flutes should be up there with other award winning restaurants and I am surprised that they aren’t. Last time we were there, more than 4 years ago, we had a table outside on the deck and were delighted with the food and the lovely views afforded from the restaurant overlooking the lake. This time around, equally serene views as before although we dined inside but the food was even more impressive. Like most wineries, the menu was somewhat limited but every order was of the highest quality and well presented.

Our group had fettuccini (entrée: $18, main: $32), duck risotto ($25), lamb shank ($28) and beef cheeks ($28). The portions were surprisingly larger than other wineries and everyone kept going on about how good their dish tasted. Hubby had the beef cheeks which literally melted in the mouth ! It was simply superb. I had the entrée size fettuccini with prawns and pine nuts atop a bed of spinach which was really, really scrumptious and a generous serve. Kids had lamb chops with mash ($12) with 2 good size chops and was definitely the odd selection from the other normal kids choices.

This is a future must for us if ever we were to do down south that way.

We had lunch here on a Wednesday.

I ordered the game plate - which I wasn't overly impressed with but I think I just chose something I didn't feel like at the time, because it was very good quality. My husband had the marron, salmon and barramundi and it was absolutely exquisite. We washed it all down with a bottle of their Verse 1 Rose which was delicate in flavour and a perfect lunch wine.

The only problem I had was the drinking water. They had bottled water on offer, but I'm generally happy with tap if it's available. Their tap water was awful. It tasted like it had been scooped straight out of the Margaret River, although the waitress said it was filtered.

Aside from the water issue, we had a great time.

One member of our party said that she was a little bit put out by the slow delivery of our meals; however I preferred the long, leisurely lunch feel of the afternoon. It was very relaxing.

Overall, I found Flutes to be just as good as it used to be and the wine is sensational too. If you can use the Entertainment card you'll be even happier - we saved $55!

If you happen to be on Caves Road, especially mid-week, and looking for that long, lingering romantic lunch, you could do worse than Brookland Valley's Flutes restaurant. Insist on a table on the balcony over the dam (weather permitting, of course) and let yourself sink back and relax.......

.... it's peaceful, the menu is comprehensive and imaginative (go the quail!) and start off with a glass each of the house sparkling brut. Click the glasses together, and allow the tranquillity to seep in. The service is unobtrusive, and the food is most satisfying......

.....except on long weekends, when you need to book first, or your dream will be shattered. I'm sure the food, service and ambience (well, maybe not the ambience) were fine - but we couldn't get a table to find out!~

I'm fond of this place, and it's got a long-term reputation. Give it a try.
