Welcome to The Flying Scotsman

The Flying Scotsman

The Flying Sscotsman seems to fill up with locals and backpackers most nights. With varying specials and a huge range of beers, the food side of things would usually take a back seat but here it seems more popular than ever. Good, hearty pub meals are served up constantly as you sit outside sipping and beer and letting the working day fade away.

$10 for pizza and beer just can't be beat (be sure to get there early). The pizza tastes fresh and has quite a pleasant aroma that other patrons use to tease whilst waiting for your own...

However the lamb shanks trump the pizza numerous times over. I would say I'm not a lamb fan but I am forced to order it (any time I'm not ordering pizza). Delicious! I will endeavor to try different foods as I hear from companions that all themeals are comparable.

Service:

Service seems to vary depending on total business of the day with the busier days paradoxially having better service (perhaps the crew are more driven). The service is at worst acceptable but more often is commendable.

Ambience:

Again it depends on pub population and at times the music is played too loud for comfortable conversation. The general feel is relaxed but 'neat'.

Overall:
After what must have been dozens of occasions it is still my preferred Sunday lunch spot and for a Sunday sesh.

The partner and I met another couple at the Flying Scotsman for lunch on Sunday half expecting it to be packed from the $10 pint and pizza deal, it wasn’t though as that starts at 3pm. We easily found a table in the dining area and selected some food which we ordered at the bar with drinks.

The pub is a little different from a lot of Perth establishments in that it displays some large city grunge, perhaps a little self-consciously but it is at least a little different. The tables are small which would be a problem if you are sharing a large amount of dishes but we weren’t so no dramas. Chairs are comfortable and there is plenty of space to move between the tables with drinks and supplies from the bar.

No starters were ordered which was just as well as the main meal sizes are substantial. I ordered a fat bastard pizza, the partner a vego special pizza and our friends the bangers and mash and a chicken burger. Despite the dining area being 1/3rd to a half full we had about a fifteen minute for our meals so waiting times could become an issue when the crowds build up but then all our meals were delivered simultaneously which was good.

Both pizzas were very good; not greasy with generous toppings on a mid style base and cooked well. We enjoyed the pizzas, I had no trouble finishing mine but was pretty much done and not in need of desserts or coffee after I helped the partner out with some of hers. The bangers and mash was also enjoyed by the other party, though the chicken burger was a bit less of a hit as it had too much mayonnaise based sauce which destroyed the bun as the meal was being eaten. On their own the ingredients were fine though, it just needed a little more balance. The chips delivered with the burger were very good.

All up the meals were in the order of $15 to $20 each (steaks and fish are around the $25 mark), were high standard pub grub and delivered sound value for money. For a quiet weekend lunch in casual surrounds the Flying Scotsman delivered and we’d have no problems going back again.

After being overseas for a month, I was craving good ole pub grub, so my friend Kefka suggested we try the Flying Scotsman.

Still feeling a bit jetlagged and tired from the long haul (early morning) flight, we had a late lunch at around 1:30pm. On arrival, there was a scattering of people in the dining area and first impressions, the place looked very clean and somewhat upmarket. A quick look at the menu, I was a bit disappointed not to find your typical counter meal type food, like lasagne and chips although that was probably on a chalkboard in the main pub section rather than the dining area. Anyhow, we decided to go for the Vego platter and Scotto's Platter as they looked extremely tasty.

A small mix up at ordering saw us overcharged for our meal, however it was quickly remedied without question when brought up with the waitstaff.

As there is an open style kitchen, we sat in full view of the chefs as they prepared the meals and were pleased as our food came out quite quickly. It was lucky we were both quite hungry because there was easily enough on the plate to feed two people each even though they cost $20 or less each.

Both had a few common items, such as the toasted turkish bread and a very generous serve of dips, which were sundried tomato and mushroom; a small serve of olives, sundried tomatoes and greek fetta; and some gourmet lettuce. The Vego platter had a very interesting selection of polenta, risotto balls and a potato gratin that was very yummy, though the polenta had a tad too much onion for my tastes. The Scotto's platter had a wide choice of bbq pork spare ribs, battered squid, honey soy chicken wings and some chicken that I wasn't too sure of the flavouring but was delicious nonetheless. The spare ribs and the chicken were a bit burnt, with black crispy bits of marinade stuck to the bottom of the meat.

Ambience, well, its a typical pub, though at lunchtime was fairly quiet.

Prices were cheap and the food was very nicely arranged on the plate with what looked like a decent amount of effort rather than a cheap counter meal with everything thrown together.

Altogether a nice experience that will definitely see me back there again for lunch or dinner, or just a night out at the pub.

I've only had their Sunday $10 pizza and pint, but I love it! Not big pizzas, but after a few pints they are the perfect size and the perfect accompaniment with a choice of three or four types they are miles better than the obligatory wedges that I inevitably order at other pubs. The pizzas come fresh from the oven, served on what look like thick little round cutting boards (made for the job).

I’ve always gone early (2pm) and so service has always been timely initially, and slowed as the crowd grows, but after a few pints (and pizzas) I have no complaints. Seating is limited so get there early. Some couches or wooden pub tables inside, and small strip of café tables outside.

I will continue to go on Sundays for the pizza and pint.

A friend took me to the Scotsman for dinner the other night... We were attempting to eat somewhat healthily, so we both got salads. And a bread platter. And a couple of pints.

Ordering and payment is done up front at the counter, which I quite like because it means you can just get up and go when you're done. Service was friendly and the waitresses were all quite attractive (hey, I'm single).

The Scotsman IS a tavern, and it's quite popular... so don't expect things to be overly quiet during peak times. It makes conversation a little difficult at times, but that's the norm in these types of places. The tables were fairly well spaced though, so it didn't feel overly cramped.

Anyhow, the food! The bread platter ($11) was nice - 5 or 6 slices of different breads, all lightly toasted and very tasty. It came with two dips (a beetroot one and a sundried tomato one), oil/balsamic vinegar and dukka, and butter (which was pretty much liquid when it came out, unfortunately). Perhaps one more dip would have been nice, but overall the bread platter was very nice.

The salads were damn fine. I had the Scotsman, which involves strips of lightly peppered steak (very tender and well cooked) on a salad of lettuce, cucumber, olives, tomato, beetroot (not too much, thankfully) and fetta (a generous amount) with a nice dressing - just the right amount and flavour.

My friend had the cajun chicken salad, which I snuck a taste of and it seemed rather nice - a little kick to it, but nothing overpowering.

Both salads were close to $15 each, and were well worth the price. I didn't even manage to finish mine (I think the pint and bread platter may have contributed to that)! The total bill was a shade under $60 - not exactly cheap, but still great value. Some of the meatier menu items seemed like great value - 450g steak for $28, anyone?

Wow, these reviews get longer and longer...

Check out the pizza and pint for $10 on Sundays, the wood fired pizza is pretty good and they try a few different and unusual toppings each week.
