- Four of us headed down from the hills to Como to experience Frenchy’s. I have been there a couple of times before both with group bookings so this was a first for the more intimate style dining. Frenchy’s has a special ambiance of its own with twinkling lights and Eiffel towers. So far so good. Unfortunately it now no longer BYO on a Saturday night. I think it will be only a matter of time before this becomes every night. It was a shame because we had just bought ourselves a couple of very special bottles to enjoy. Never mind such is life. On to the food. We had only the 4 course menus offered to us so I was thinking that this too must have changed as "normally" a 3 course set menu is also available. I've checked this morning on their web page and The set 3 course menu is offered 7 days a week. Not to us!! We started with soup. I had the scallop chowder which was particularly nice. A good blend and thickness although a tad too salty for my taste. The others had French Onion with cheese croutons and a leek and mushroom soup. All said theirs was enjoyable. For our entree we lived the brave and had escargot "snails" with lots of garlic and a pernot based sauce. Very authentic arriving at our table in their shells and revived a memory for me from Paris many years ago. The others had garlic prawns which again they all enjoyed. We had ordered garlic bread and as this still hadn't arrived we reminded the wait staff. It did arrive eventually! Our main meals were most pleasing I had a snapper wrapped in filo and stuffed with prawns and scallops. Very tasty but just too much. My patriots had a chicken breast wrapped in filo and the steak with peppercorn sauce, this was accompanied by a plate of veggies to share. Big breath and 20 minutes of letting that all go down before we tucked into course 4!! Banana Crepes with a butterscotch sauce. Mmmmmm. By this time we were all quite mellow and after asking for the bill a glass of butterscotch liquor was given to us two girls. Not ordered and a very nice touch from Gayle the owner. Now that the food review is over let me tell you about the cabaret. A duo has been part of this scene for many years and very successful. Last night unfortunately Kelly wasn't performing, however her replacement did an admiral job. She didn't have Kelly's wit and conversation skills with the audience but the evening was very pleasant. The dance floor is small but when you go as a group or birthday type function it is fine, as an outsider we didn't feel we wanted to intrude on their party celebrations. Didn't matter too much as it was just as enjoyable watching 60 and 70yr olds reliving their youth! The service by the young wait staff at Frenchy’s was commendable, however the owners need to unwind a bit and smile once in a while. They both looked as if they needed a good holiday and seemed very sullen. Small point I know but a smile can go a very long way. I'm sure I’ll be back but next time as a group.
