Gavino Restaurant
Gavino is a traditional Italian restaurant in the heart of Subiaco in Perth, Western Australia. Earlier this year the restaurant was taken over by Chantal and Patrice Cucca. Chantal and Patrice have been in the hospitality business for 25 years, formerly owning Chantrice Restaurant and the Little Frog Restaurant in Bunbury, Western Australia, and La Vieille France in Taupo, New Zealand. Patrice, a French chef by trade, was born in Alsace, France to an Italian father and a French mother, and this same fusion of France and Italy Patrice has brought to Gavino, bringing an assortment of French dishes to accompany the established Italian menu. Gavino offers fine traditional Italian cuisine with a French twist, in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

- We had garlic bread served at the table, which was quite small but tasty. I can only speak for myself when it comes to mains. I had the fish of day, which was barramundi served with parsley butter. The fish was nicely cooked but should have ordered a side of vegtables to go with it.

- We went for dinner before the rugby so had to rush through the meal. It was pretty nice but we were not there long enough to get the whole feel of the place. Would re-visit.

- Garlic bread ordered for the table and we also tried the escargot(first time). There was no slimy taste and the serving to me looked more like a main than an entree. Generous serves for all main meals ordered; kangaroo fillets and beef fillet were cooked to perfection and all the seafood based pasta dishes had large pieces of fresh prawns, mussels and fish. The only "disappointment" was that the chilli mussels didn't have enough 'kick' in them, but then again that's a personal taste thing.

- Service was prompt and unobtrusive. Water was served at the table straight away and drinks orders taken quickly. Entrees and mains were served at good intervals so you didn't feel like you were being rushed out the door.

- Quite a spacious restaurant with a rustic feel to it. The night we were there it wasn't packed so it was a nice dining experience and we were all able to carry a conversation without having to shout. Location is just off the main street so they are shielded from any road noise which is good.

- A very enjoyable experience, we were entertaining overseas guests and they were full to the brim from the entree and mains that we didn't get to try the desserts. We used the ent card and they didn't scratch it off so we'll be going back again to try other dishes. A good find in the Subi area.

2 entrees were ordered - a stuffed mushroom and grilled squid. The mushroom was just OK, flavours didn't complement very well. The squid had great flavour, slightly overcooked and tough, and over seasoned.
For mains, we had spaghetti marinara and a tomato based ravioli. Lovely seafood and sauce in the marinara, and the ravioli was also well cooked. - Service

- They forgot my softdrink, but brought it out straght away once I told them. Very polite waiting staff, and quite a few for a relatively quiet Friday night.

- We would go back again, as the food is nicer than at a cafe, but not as expensive as an upmarket italian restaurant.

As for the restaurant being located away from the main action of Subiaco central... thank goodness for that! If I wanted to listen to the drunk squeals of barely dressed girls and the smell of exhaust fumes while I eat my meal, then I'd head to the Subi hotel, or perhaps enjoy the street dining in Northbridge.
I can't claim to have tried all the dishes on the menu, but the linguini was so good my partner stopped to text his mother and he hasn't wanted to order any other dish since. If that's not a sign of good pasta then I don't know what is. It really should be the signature dish!
The staff are also very friendly right from when you make your reservation through to seeing you off at the door. No snobbery here.
My only complaint is that you get a bit of a cold breeze when sitting near the glass windows, but nothing a glass of good wine won't fix.
Thank you Gavino, you're definitely a favourite in our eyes and we will see you Saturday!

- Up until two years ago when Michael still owned Gavinos, this used to be my favorite restaurant in all of Perth. 5 Years running. Great pasta, legendary steak and great service. Since it changed hands I found the above three lacking unfortunately.
