George Street Bistro

George Street Bistro

Welcome to the George Street Bistro,

located in the quaint historical George Street in East Fremantle we created a welcoming space to make you feel at home without doing the dishes.

Our cusine is authentically European, matching regional specialties with seasonal availabilities (and some native Australian spices) in a warm setting with original art and white table linen. We aim to bring you the flavours of our childhood in a modern presentation. Cooked and combined in a wholesome manner that honours the traditions of our culinary culture without fencing them in.

True to this culture you will not be charged for the bread, nor will you find any side dishes on the menu. Our meals are complete packages which we designed for your pleasure.

We change our menu every day, twice actually, for lunch and dinner and prepare the food in small batches. That guarantees freshness, variety and creativity.

Please have a look at our menus on this site but understand that they are just samples. When you come here they will be quite different. So be prepared to be surprised!

Everything here is made by us, from the bread to the meringue with the coffee. The cakes, cookies and our ice-cream, the stocks, sauces, soups and salads, just everything. That makes us an ideal place for coeliacs or people with other food allergies. We really know what's in our dishes.

Please talk to our staff for any special wishes and a recommendation from our carefully choosen wine list, otherwise we will try to make ourselves invisible so you can enjoy the company of your friends.

Also try out our new Gourmet Delicatessen next door, the "George Street Merchants". You will find everything food from local and imported cheeses to European Cold Meats, "Food to Go" all made from the chefs at the Bistro, Cakes, Quiches and Pies to Oils and Vinegars, Condiments, Sauces, Organic Fresh Produce and our own Sourdough Bread!

Hope to welcome you soon,

Sabine & Soren

  • We enjoyed another beautiful lunch here. I can say now that the place consistently delivers very good quality food. I had the fennel, orange and pink peppercorn soup. It was absolutely DEVINE. It even drew attention from nearby diners. Only problem was it was so stingy in size. I looked back on the menu thinking it had to be an entree. There are no entrees on the menu and it was $16, in line with other main prices. I couldnt get a spoon into the bowl, rather had to scrape the very shallow bowl. With bread it took the edge off my hunger - a shame as it was SO tasty. My partner had the german bratwurst with honey sauerkraut. Again, very tasty but on the stingy side. It was one small sausage cut into quarters. They do need to offer entrees.

  • The food was beautiful. I ordered the salmon, which was lovely thick strips of salmon (very fresh) sitting on a mustard cream/dill sauce. It came with salad and potato rosti. It was thoroughly enjoyable. The salad I will say was a little boring, but the rest was very very nice. My partner had the gold band snapper which was cooked to absolute perfection. It was thoroughly cooked through, yet still very tender and juicy. It was pan fried and I'm surprised the chef managed to keep it so juicy. This was served on a bisque with a side salad. We also had fresh home made bread, which was lovely. Portions are on the smaller side, enough for me, but not my partner. No entrees on offer.

  • We were greeted and seated immediately, but were then left for about 15 minutes before ordering. I actually said "another 5 minutes and I'm gone", she JUST arrived before I was ready to walk. They weren't busy either. Aside from that service was friendly, food delivered by the chef...?

  • Inside is simple and nice, adjoining dining room looks very crisp & smart, although tables very close to one another. We chose to sit outside - I imagine this impossible in Summer as we copped the brunt of the midday sun. Cant really rate the ambience until a dinner visit.

  • I will definitley return here. The menu is varied and interesting and has some beautiful flavour combination's. The wine list offers a good variety, not just high end like some other places I have recently visited. They could do to zing up the service a bit.

  • We ate here for Valentine's Day; it was a set menu with a choice of two for each course, so very little excuse for the average food we received.

My oyster starter looked like it had been prepared at a fish and chip joint, was gritty and bland. My girlfriend's veal was good, but somehow the same mayonnaise type dressing had found it's way on to both our dishes. Why? It didn't go with either, let alone both, and seemed plain lazy. My main course fish was cooked adequately but not properly; my girlfriend's duck confit did not fall of the bone as it should, it had to be levered. Poor effort. The pudding was excellent, but I was so p**sed off by the previous courses that I can't remember what it was.

  • The waitress was unable to take an order for two people without writing it down very slowly; she was so shy that we couldn't hear her speak. Our aperitif cocktail (after much asking) arrived with our starter, meaning our starter wine came with our main course etc. We kept asking, it was tedious.

  • I heard so many good things about this place that I was really looking forward to my meal here. I was so disappointed. And it wasn't helped by curt responses from the owner every time we had to ask for something, again and again. One final thing, I believe there was a $3/head cover charge for water, so we paid $6 for a singe bottle of filtered tap water. Unbelievable. I hope we got this place on an off night. If only there was more competition here, my advice is go to Bouchon and have a treat.

  • I agree with all that fionareed has said about this little gem. I had lunch there recently and the oven baked duck was to die for. My guest chose a rabbit dish and said that it too was excellent.

A general comment: Ambience is often very difficult to rate. If you are into fine dining the criteria will, I think, obviously be different than those used for cafes, bistros or pizza parlours.

  • I haven't had the pleasure of visiting this fab little place for about 8 months, however I can recall all of my experiences at least partially (depending on how many bottles of wine were consumed!!!) and summarise as follows.....

    1. Fremantle (and nearby regions) dining tends to generally be a little disappointing which I find hard to accept as in every other way what a fabulous place.
    2. George Street Bistro is a rare EXCEPTION - great area and great dining.... This is seriously good food
    3. I have had brunch, lunch and dinner each on at least 2 occasions and all are a totally different dining experience to each other (eg. to lunch there is a totally different experience somehow than to have dinner, not just because of the fact they are different meals but the fact that it seems the style of the food is quite differen (with a few exceptions) is quite different which is an interesting and refreshing change.
    4. Service and ambience is very very good and pretty consistent from what I can see - minor complaint is acoustics not great due I imagine to soaring ceilings and wooden floorboards. A very very warm autumn like feel with unusual but interesting artworks on display/consignment .... the feel is pretty typical of George Street itself, quaint but eclectic.
    5. Not exactly my favourite type of dinner food - very European leaning towards German or similar type influences, and very 'meat, offal and rich' oriented, however is so amazingly well done that I could almost be converted.

I probably have enjoyed lunch there more than dinner in terms of purely the food - the choices limited but sufficient - simple with a few 'red herrings' thrown in for the more adventurous or robust appetites. I have to say, the simplest spaghetti Ametriciana and the Caesar Salad were absolutely bellisimo....so I guess what I am saying in my review ... George Street are as THE BEST at the tried but true options (that I cringe usually at how many places can get so WRONG!) as well as the heavy more complex ones usually present at dinner. On the dinner note the ambience, white cloths and warmth of the place, combined with their heavenly desserts makes for a great night out whether as a couple or in a small group.

BYO (tho I recall corkage not cheap - but a wonderful bottle shop across the road might make it still a good choice), though now predominately accepted as a licenced restaurant. Recommendation - if dining during the day enquire about their very interesting Sunday brunch (if they are still doing) and if any other day of the week make sure you take an hour before dining to peruse the little interesting array of shops, galleries and antique stores that make George Street what it is.
