Welcome to Ha-Lu Japanese Restaurant (Halu)

Ha-Lu Japanese Restaurant (Halu)

Ha-Lu has taken Japanese dining to new levels rarely seen before in Perth. As opposed to structuring a meal that comprises of entree and main course offerings, Ha-Lu offers it patrons a meal which encourages social intercourse around the dining table.

The dining style is very similar to the famous Izaka-ya offerings where patrons will meet with friends and work colleagues after a long day to have a drink and share in a laugh or two. To accompany their evening, patrons will order several small dishes to compliment their beverages. The various dishes will arrive as soon as they have been prepared by the kitchen. In other words, there is no order and it comes when it is ready.

Although Ha-Lu offers an extremely large range of Sake, Shochu and Japanese beer (as well as local wine ane beer), the emphasis is not so much on the drinking, but the enjoyment of food and the company of friends and family.

With such a large menu on offer, there will always be something to tempt the appetite and the curiosity.

Most diners will order two or three courses per person. However, it is very rare that they will be able to eat their meal without sharing a bite or two with their fellow diners. Each course is extremely tempting, all being prepared by our Japanese chefs.

Opening Times Open seven days commencing at 6pm.
(closed Xmas day, Boxing day, New Years day and Easter Monday only)

Halu Japanese in Mount Hawthorn

I was stoked when our young friend, Robert (ex-Yahachi Management) invited us down to try out the offerings at Ha-Lu recently. In fact, we even sent some of our people down the following two nights we were that impressed with the place!

Tom and I headed down on the first night to test out as much of the menu as possible. For a place that prides itself on getting the freshest and best produce around, it is amazing how diverse their menu remains!

We had big plans to at least try out most of the menu, but didn’t quite make it that far. Everything we had (and we had a lot!) was perfectly balanced in flavour, lovely contrasts with the texture and arranged and presented pictured-perfect. It was hard to put any dishes ahead of the others if we had to rank, but after much deliberation, the 4 dishes below just had that extra wow-factor:

Wagyu Beef Tataki

So that’s what we fell in love with on the first night; then the girls hit up the more well-known Japanese type dishes on a bit of a ‘girls night out’, in which they had an absolute blast (as you can see below)!

Crumbed Camembert Cheese with blueberry sauce – Wow what a way to start a girly evening with this lovely indulgent morsel! Crumbed camembert can only be described as pure melted cheesy heaven especially when paired with a berry fruit sauce which matched the delicate flavor of the cheese and the crunchy texture of the crumbs so nicely in my mouth! All of the girls loved this one and it was a great starter for all cheese lovers – which would also do well as an end to a meal!

Succulent “Teriyaki” Chicken – My girlfriend Kate ordered this one as she wasn’t quite brave enough to try the duck (poor lass she didn’t know what she was missing! I will explain more about the duck later). However I must say that being a standard Teriyaki Chicken dish this was probably the nicest teriyaki chicken dish I have had in a very long time! You can become so used to the boring drones of lunchtime teriyaki chicken in the city – however this particular teriyaki chicken from Ha-Lu was really succulent, hardly fatty, and the sauce was lovely. Highly recommended for people who love a good teriyaki chicken dish or anyone not brave enough to expand their palette repertories whilst out with more exciting people at Japanese restaurants (haha sorry Kate I’m only being facetious!)

Chicken Bento Box – For a bento box this box was sure-fire value! I couldn’t believe how much meat was in this box and it was all cooked to perfection and tasted delicious. Refer to comments about Teriyaki chicken here also. [Note to future diners: When you come to visit Ha-Lu please eat more than bento boxes and teriyaki – the menu is amazing and so fresh! But if you aren’t used to different things then go the bento box as you’ll love it!]

Pork Belly Kaku-ni – Mmmmmmm pork belly! I must say that I order pork belly whenever I find it on a menu and Ha-Lu’s pork belly was divine! It was moist and so tasty and literally melted in my mouth! It came with a strange boiled egg and had a lovely teriyaki (style of) sauce. The egg was something I am not quite accustomed to, however found it very interesting and it seemed to go nicely with the pork belly. A highly recommended dish for any pork lover!

Duck and Aubergine – The delicately thin slices of duck, presented so beautifully with equal sized slices of lightly crispy aubergine, was absolutely amazing! The duck was so succulent and tasty and I never realised that aubergine could be so delicious! This was definitely my favourite dish for the night (apart from the wagyu tataki which was equally amazing).

Overall I was really impressed with Ha-Lu and will definitely be visiting again sometime soon for another catch up with my girlfriends. The service was friendly and attentive yet unobtrusive, the food was fresh and fantastic, like I mean really fantastic and really fresh, and oh so delicious! At first we thought we would be spending hundreds on dinner, eating so many small dishes, and still end up hungry! However the bill came up very reasonable indeed and therefore proved to be very affordable and not to mention we were all very full at the end! Thanks to Robert and the team for looking after us so well!

Now to sum up: The fish was of the best quality you will get anywhere in Western Australia, the traditional type meals such as the Teriyaki and Bento were gobbled down with gusto by the girls and the staff were very helpful and the timing of the meals was pretty much down to your own ordering. Don’t go expecting to order an entree, main and dessert like most places you'll visit; you just order dishes as you want to eat them, very simple!

Ultimate Favourites:

Emma - Duck and Aubergine
Joel - Mixed Seafood Tartar
Tom - Wagyu Beef Tataki

Food:

As the menu of Halu suggested, we ordered two to three dishes per person to share. We ordered sashimi of the day, sushi, pork belly broth, duck with aubergine, lamb cutlets with camambert, foil baked salmon, deep fried camembert with blueberry and patagonian toothfish.
All I can say is that each and every dish was magnificent - both in presentation and taste. The stand outs were the patagonian tooth fish which was crumbly and melt in the mouth delicious, the foil baked salmon that was served with a zingy citrus sauce and was again perfectly cooked, and the sushi that was prepared fresh and comprised salmon, tuna, snapper, beef and duck.

Service:

The service was also excellent. All staff members were courteous and polite and were also able to advise us on a choice of sake. We were told that there would be a wait for the sushi as it is prepared upon request, and this honesty and forward thinking was really appreciated.

Ambience:

The decor is clean and modern, with light colour walls and dark furniture. We were seated towards the back of the restaurant and could see the preparation area of the kitchen which added to the ambience.

Overall:
Overall, this is one of the best Japanese meals I have ever had. I loved the tapas style menu and the well sourced ingredients for each dish. The fish was just so delicious! I would recommend this place to anybody, there are enough dishes to keep everyone happy and the range of dishes available is high and above other standard Japanese restaurants in Perth. I can't wait to go back!

A perfect place for a relaxed evening out with girlfriends.

The service was perfect and unobtrusive. Stunning decor with comfy chairs.

Food was really really nice. Most of the table ordered the Bento boxes which were beautifully presented and by all accounts very yummy. However, the two of us who shared the 'tapas' style foods definitely got the better end of the deal.

Crumbed scallops (evening special) that were thick and melted in the mouth. Perfect Tempura that wasn't the slightest bit oily. Duck and Aubergine that once again has us drooling for more and the crumbed Camembert which was divine although very rich. Portion sizes are small, which of course they are meant to be.

With a modest amount of alcohol ordered our bill came to $35 each. We didn't stay for desert or coffee as it was getting loud, the place being packed on a Thursday night.

Worth a note is that I booked via email and had a prompt and polite reply. All seven of us agreed that it was a great place to go.

Fantastic food, pleasant service, we will be back!

Definitely need to book a table, as we found out, when we got turned away the first time we visited this restaurant, as we did not have a booking on a Sunday night.

We ate here in December, and I can't remember all the dishes we had, but I do remember that we enjoyed each one immensely. There were just 2 of us for dinner, and we ordered 5 savoury dishes between us and 2 desserts. All the food was beautifully presented, and although they were not large servings, we were very satisfied with our choices at the end of our meal.

We started with a duck dish, thinly sliced, and very tasty. The mixed tempura was authentic, with very light batter and a delicious mix of seafood and veges. We also had the "nabe/hot pot", which had thinly sliced meat with glass noodles and mushrooms in a soy broth, which had a rich flavour which was not too strong. We also had a chicken dish, which was grilled chicken with an unusual sauce over it.

For desserts, I had the homemade creme caramel, which was divine, and the other dessert was a "parfait" which consisted of vanilla ice-cream, choc pieces, choc coco-pops, and choc wafers - very rich and couldn't be finished!

We plan to go back with friends to try some other interesting sounding dishes on the menu. The bill came to $120.00, which included 1 beer and 1 green tea.

After hearing Joel and other friends rant and rave over this place i decided to try it on Friday. I rang up Friday afternoon to make a booking and was told that we could only get a table for 9:15pm (lucky we are late eaters’ anyway). The difficulty was trying to pick out the entrees as there was such a large selection. I decided to try the sashimi tartare as something different and it just melted in my mouth with such alluring flavours. I also noticed that my friend who ordered the duck had almost licked the plate. I also found their range of saki to be quite large, i decided to try a recommendation of the waitress and it was deliciously sweet and had no bite. This is possibly one of the best Japanese restaurants in Perth as its menu is so diverse and different. It doesnt bore you with sushi and Katsu chicken or the same dishes every other place serves.

Having read so many very positive reviews of Ha-lu, I thought I'd better have a look.

The style of eating is lovely - lots and lots of 'little' dishes, perfect for sharing in a group, or you could elect for one of the beautifully presented bento boxes all for yourself.

The range of dishes is excellent, including hot and cold dishes, some very 'japanese' and and also some quite western (eg deep fried camembert) and would cater for the unadventurous to those who want a few new tastes. The standout dishes we ordered were the agedashi (?spelling) tofu which would be perfect to serve a tofu doubter and the duck and aubergine dish. I can't remember it's name but it consisted of bite sized morsels of barely cooked duck with rich and creamy eggplant plus just a touch of crispy, caramelised skin and a slight citrus kick from the sauce.

Unfortunately I had work the next day so didn't experiment with any of the exciting sake menu, have to leave that for next time.

The decor is stylish and fresh, with great attention to detail - nice plates and chopstick holder and that sort of thing.

The service was exquisite with the staff being extremely helpful and informed about the various dishes.

My only very slight axe to grind is that the kitchen closed quite early (around 10 I think on a Friday) which didn't even affect us but may be worth keeping in mind if you're planning a long multi-coursed evening.

Take a bit of cash along - it's not that it's a super expensive restaurant but a lot of the servings are quite small and it is well worth sampling multiple dishes.

I can't wait to go back.

My husband and I think we have found our new favourite restaurant-he even offered to do this review if I wasnt going to. In search of good Japanese food we have usually done the pilgrimage to Tsunami but it is a long way from home (and a rather large taxi fare) so we decided to try after much investigative work - Ha-Lu

We dined at Ha-Lu on Friday night to celebrate my 28th birthday and from the moment we entered the restaurant the service was outstanding. We were taken straight to our table and given a moment to look over the menu before one of the nameless yet always smiling and helpful without being intrusive staff returned to take our order. Also worth noting water is free here not charged like most other Perth Restaurant.

With the extensive range of Shochu and Sake we decided to try a few - I tried the Hakkaisan warm and my husband tried the Kumonoi also warm. It is also important to note that in the description in the menu it also provides a rating out of 5 from very sweet to dry to help decide if you are unfamiliar like we were the Sake that you think you would enjoy best. Both were great - so great my husband had another two pots - one warm and another chilled - he said you could really taste the difference. Now onto the food.

As I had been incredibly busy at work that day and barely eaten I was pretty hungry, my husband is always hungry for good food so we opted for a wide range of dishes. From the cold dish section of the menu we selected the Fresh Home Made Tofu which tasted wonderful and the Beef Tataki which was also wonderful-the accompanying vegetables and sauces really bought the flavours out. I dont usually eat red meat but this tasted great.

From the Yaki-mono menu we selected the Foil Baked Salmon - this was mainly for me and I loved every bite it was perfectly infused with the flavours and not overcooked, the Duck and Aubergine with Madeira sauce which was also favoured by both of us.

I really like Tofu (something I have only discovered since going to China) so I also ordered the Agedashi Tofu - now my husband normally doesnt like Tofu but after one piece of the perfectly crisp and not at all greasy or soggy tofu he was eyeing off at least another piece. We also ordered a Crispy Chicken Katsu Bento which contained Chicken Katsu and Chicken Karaage which like the Tofu were crisp and not greasy or soggy, it also had fish Nanban vinaigrette, Atsuyaki omlette and steamed rice which went well with the various flavours. I would also like to mention how beautiful the Bento boxes actually are.

I almost never eat deserts in restaurants as I usually figure if they cant get the main items right what will they do to deserts. Based on the other items we had eaten we decided to try the deserts and were not disappointed. I chose the Chocolate Parfait which tasted great although a little different-it had cocoa pops in it but trust me this wasnt a bad thing just not what I was expecting - more of a interesting and strangely pleasant surprise. My husband had the Green Tea icecream which he also really enjoyed.

The restaurant was pretty full while we were there but you never really noticed, only when other diners food came out and I was trying to check out what they had ordered because everything smelt and looked so good. I would also like to mention that the couple at the table behind us ordered the wrong thing - it was their fault for not reading the menu properly and not the waiters but the staff happily took it back and bought out what they really wanted without a fuss. The signs of a truely good restaurant.

This was probably the best dining experience I have had in Perth in a long time (and through work I do eat at some of the more expensive restaurants in town). In the taxi on the way home we were already planning the next visit -put simply I cant wait to return and am already trying to come up with excuses to do so (within the next month if I get my way).

You have not experienced the real Japanese cuisine if you haven't gone to HaLu. It offers authentic Japanese cuisine with a modern touch. The place is cozy and service is great. The waitstaffs are polite and friendly.

The food comes with beautiful presentation and tastes awesome. I love the deep fried camembert cheese with blueberry sauce. The sweet plum wine is a heartwarming for the cold winter night.

HaLu is definitely worth trying. It is a must!!

This is one of the best little finds as far as restaurants go that I have had in a while.

Been here twice in the last week, the food is amazing, fresh to the table and great quality. Fantastic menu with heaps of different dishes.

Restaurant is modelled on a tapas inspired Japanese. Surroundings are light and ambient.

Some must tries are the Deep Fried Camembert Cheese with Blueberry Sauce, this restaurant is worth going to just for this dish alone.

The tapas style servings look on the small side but are extremely filling. The Bento Boxes are great value and full of lots of little treats.

Service was top notch, wait staff are very attentive, extremely polite and food is to the table very quickly.

Do yourself a favour and try this restaurant out - you won't be disappointed.

We arrived without a booking which was not the best considering the place was full and buzzing. We were offered a table that had just departed.

Before too long, the table was cleaned up and drink orders taken. (the staff were very apologetic that we were seated at a table that hadn’t been properly cleared).

The menu was thoroughly explained; basically the idea is to order a few different dishes that will come out when the kitchen has made the dish - very fresh :)

We (my husband and I) ordered about four dishes to start off. We were surprised that there was not a long delay before the first dish arrived, especially considering that the restaurant was very busy.

We both shared each dish as it came out. I loved the Sashimi salad, hubby enjoyed the Fish Kara-age (spelling??).

All up, very enjoyable, very filling and great value for money. The floor staff did a great job considering how busy they were. We never felt forgotten or left out.

We noticed that there were outside table and chairs which will make it a great place to eat during the warmer months (way too cold to eat outside now) and watch the world pass by.

If you enjoy Japanese, you have to try this place.

Wonderful find! Was looking for a nice restaurant and came upon this one in a local newspapers. Went there and enjoyed it totally.

I gave 0.5 star less for food for the smaller (thin) cut of meat and fish dish; and a bit on the price for local ingredients; compared to some Japanese restaurant I have been to.

It's a very rare find in Perth and as it said, this kind of dining is rare in Perth and it's only the second time I came upon such great and authentic restaurant.

Go and have a try! Make sure you order their extensive range of sake and sochu to go with their yummiest food!

I found Ha-Lu on the eatingwa website. It got a pretty good wrap so thought we would give it a go.

Wow - I am a convert. The food was nothing short of stunning. The servings are small and designed to be shared, however the ingredients were the freshest and best you could possibly hope for.

The service to be seated was a little slow, though once seated I can confess I've not had such a pleasant dining experience in Perth for a long time. Polite, courteous and attentive without being intrusive.

The kitchen is open at the back such that you can view the food being prepared (should you so desire).

I marked them down 1/2 star as the beverage list was limited and the serving sizes were small.

My summary is that Ha-Lu is high quality Japanese cuisine matched with great service creating a sensational ambiance. It is a special place worth sharing...

Four of us dined at this delightful little restaurant last night. What a find although a little off the beaten track in Oxford St!! We shared all the dishes and loved every one. One of my friends does not like Miso but the soup there was so good she drank the last drop.

Dishes for entree included Tartar style Sashimi of the day, Beef Tataki, Crispy Pork & Nitamago egg & potato dumpling. The sashimi was fresh and delicious with just a hint of wasabi in the dressing. Beef tataki some of the best we have had. Came with small pieces of baked vegetables which were placed on the meat, rolled and dipped in the accompanying sauce - delicious. Best of all though was the crispy pork - don't miss this one. Mains included foil baked salmon - yum, chicken teriyaki Bento & deep fried prawn bento. These were fantastic and included chicken karaage together with other assorted picked vegetables & pieces of fish. Japanese lovers - don't miss this one. Food prices were reasonably priced although the wine prices were a little high but they stocked some very nice Margaret River, Yarra Valley & Barossa wines. The staff were attentive & friendly and we will certainly be going back.

We went to Ha-Lu in last week. (Actually, it’s my second visiting)That was good again. I didn't see Nabe (Hot pot) on the menu last time so we ordered one. That was excellent experience. It was very busy night and only a girl was on the floor but she seems well handling. Our table had lots of attention and food served good timing. I will come again for my friend’s birthday in next month.

Quite a narrow premises with modern furnishings and open kitchen. Great looking rustic plates and comfy chairs to enjoy your meal.

They have a great selection of wine and beer with an extensive sake menu as well. The wines are on the pricey side (eg. reds started at $32 a bottle) but they are all quality. I might also add they are fully licenced.

We had the sashimi for entree which I shared with my partner. It included 3 types of fish (salmon a 2 other white-fleshed varieties) with dipping sauce (soy) and wasabi. It was tasty and succulent as sashimi should be.

We both selected a 'bento' meal which includes miso soup, omlette, cold fish pieces, fried 'Ha Lu' chicken, fried and crumbed creamy potato caked, steamed rice and your choice of either teriyaki fish, crumbed prawns, tofu, fried chicken etc. We chose the teriyaki fish (so tender and moist) and the crumbed prawn (more batter and crumbs than prawn). Overall they were tasty and filling. Maybe an unexpected meal for us as we had never ordered the 'bento' before.

Overall a pleasant experience with a modern twist on Japanese cuisine and contemporary surroundings. The bill was $50pp which included a $32 bottle of red. I left contented and full which sometimes doesn't always happen at a Japanese restaurant with an appetite like mine.
