Overall:
Saturday night was our first visit back in a while as last time we went it was Asahi which we didn't particularly enjoy and weren’t in a hurry to go back. With the name change and some good EWA reviews we made a booking for four and the partner and I found easy parking out the front at just before 7pm with our friends arriving soon after.
We were shown efficiently to our seats and given menus, though not offered water. We were brought some after asking for it when putting in entrée orders, though in small glasses that needed to be refilled pretty regularly which didn't really happen
First impression of the service is reasonable efficiency, though despite there being adequate waitstaff especially for the smaller numbers early in the evening they needed a little prompting to take orders or refill water glasses. No problems when you had their attention, you just needed to catch their eye which was not always easy to do.
Entrees of vegetarian spring rolls, Tataki beef and prawn katsu were ordered and delivered fairly promptly, though in 2 deliveries. Everyone was happy with theirs; my beef tataki was high quality, well made and very enjoyable.
Again the mains came in 2 separate deliveries with a longer wait for them than what we had for the entrees but with the possible exception of a vegetarian curry it was worth the wait. The other mains of Prawn tempura, Sashimi, and a Sashimi set menu impressed their respective diners with scores being 4 stars to 4 stars + in these cases.
The Prawn tempura had large tasty prawns in a light batter, no heavy-handed oiliness or grease and a good match for the great sashimi. The sashimi was a generous sized serving with the sashimi set menu also including miso soup, rice and some cleansing fruit which our friend enjoyed. Our vegetarian co-diner wasn’t very impressed with the curry but felt that it was not really her style rather than any problems with the ingredients or preparation.
By the time we had finished our mains the restaurant was quite full with a lively, though not overpowering buzz as the space is quite small. Tables are pretty close together so extricating yourself can take some contortion, particularly if you are next to the wall, though the layout is such that apart from arriving and leaving the neighbours won’t impact your space. The fitout is clean but basic, no fussiness but a little sterile. We certainly didn’t feel inspired to stay around to try deserts or coffee, instead leaving to try our luck at the Globe over the road.
For four of us including corkage, 3 entrees and 4 mains with rice the total was $120 which was very good for the food quality, the ambience and service doesn’t quite match it but isn’t bad in any way, we would certainly go back.
