Food:

Food here is average. Fish is mostly fresh and portions are large (so is amount of rice). I had 14 piece sushi of which 4 were interesting pieces of fish and the rest rolls, etc. We had beef entree which had too much heavy sauce and too many onions and too little meat. Chicken bento box was lite on the chicken and heavy on sauce and rice.

Service:

No issues. Seemed fine. Nothing special.

Ambience:

Nothing special. We went on a cool night and everytime the door opened everyone got a blast of chilly air. Not pleasant.

Overall:
Can't say we would return. $70 for a bit of sushi and some oversauced meats. This budget at other places would deliver far better food and ambiance.

We enjoyed a sashima platter, and I had a chicken Koti (?) which is like a Japanese tasting platter. It was delicious! The sashimi was so fresh, and melt in the mouth. The dish that I had was served with salad, chicken (which was crumbed), fresh fruit, rice and a miso soup. My partner had something to do with fish. My point is, you could order anything off that menu, and you would get a fresh, tasty dinner that wouldn't disappoint.

Service:

Service was outstanding. This restaurant was PACKED and as we arrived 10 minutes early, they put us on a waiting table, to be seated once our table was cleared. The waitresses were very indulgent of us, and gave impeccable service.

Ambience:

The food is cheap and of the highest standard. Just don't look around you at the decor. Remind yourself that you didn't go to this restaurant for an aesthetically pleasant experience, you are here for a culinary delight. You won't be disappointed.

Overall:
PERFECT! If you don't want a romantic night out. Great for mates, or families. The food is magnificent, loads of parking, great service - what more could you want??

Beef tataki - really delicious! I couldn't taste an ounce of rawness, the meat was so tender and the sauce was really great!
Rapture roll (think that's the name) - tempura prawn in the middle, rice, nori, and a fresh slice of salmon on top, very creative and tasted great with soy sauce and wasabi :) Very fresh!
Chicken udon - I loved the soup, it was very tasty and the udon was springy too.
Green salad: nothing spectacular but tasted good!

Service:

It's not really 5 star service that you would get in a fine dining restaurant. Just some minor details..e.g. not getting plates (when it was quite obvious my friend and I were sharing), and not getting soy sauce for the sushi, and no water refilling. But maybe coz' they were extremely busy!

Ambience:

Small but clean and modern with a light Japanese style to it. Nothing spectacular but it's definitely not shabby on the inside and I was very comfortable.

Overall:
I don't often go out to eat Japanese food anymore, just because I've been to many places that all have the same varieties and it just gets boring! That and also the fact that nothing tastes authentic around here. BUT - I heard good things about Hanami from a friend and when I tried it I was pleasantly surprised! I have to say I am looking forward to going back and have already made another reservation! You can judge by the good business on weekdays that the food is definitely good.

These assessments are based on Japanese Restaurants in Australia - not Japan. As an Australian Japanese restaurant in the middle order it is fantastic. The service is prompt and the food good. Prices are right for the range.

We had decided to eat at Avenue Nine only to discover that they don't open on Mondays, so drove back along Beaufort Street and called in here instead. Nice little place with clean lines to the decor, and heavy wood furniture. From where I sat, I could see into the kitchen and that looked nice and meticulous as well.

We started with a plate of prawn goyza and spring rolls, which while they were both tasty, I believe I have had better elsewhere, although my companion disagreed with me. We both had a hankering for tempura so two assorted tempura bento boxes followed shortly after our entrees. The tempura was huge - two pieces of fish, two prawns, one very large squid ring, and four vegetable pieces. With the rice, salad, miso soup and the accompanying bean sprouts, I was full to the point of wanting a good lay down!! Everything was tasty, but about an hour after eating, we both noticed a greasy taste in our mouths, so I am less satisfied with the meal than I was. (I should note, the table next to me had ordered a plate of sashimi and it looked very fresh and extremely appetising.)

The service from the one waitress was friendly and prompt. We were never left waiting for long. While we were there, several people came in to dine as well as for the steady stream of takeaways. Again, I think there is better out there but if you are local to Mt Lawley, worth a visit.

We introduced our friends to Hanami Restaurant last Saturday night when my husband and I went there with our another couple (very dear friends of ours).

Our booking for 4 was easy to make and we were surprised at such late notice (having made the booking on Thursday) to find when we arrived that the place was full to capacity.

Our friends had not experienced Japanese cuisine for over 20 years (being put off by a negative experience all those years before). They were pleasantly surprised by the menu choices (not all raw fish and whitebait as had been their meals on the occasion of their dining experience 20 years ago).

I ordered Chicken Katsu and a sashimi Set (with salad and miso soup), my husband enjoyed the spring rolls and an assortment of Tempura. Our friends each ordered Chicken Teriyaki and Octopus balls, with Tempura Prawns and Teriyaki Beef for mains. We shared a couple of plates of mixed sushi and California rolls as well.

We were pleased that the restaurant was BYO as we had a mix of white and red wine drinkers in our group. Our waitress was attentive and kindly offered us glassed water and refills at regular intervals.

We were unable to fit in dessert, but were not rushed off from our table once we completed our main meals, in fact we were allowed to sit and enjoy our company and conversation until the restaurant was ready to close at about 10pm.

Our bill was $130 - which for 4 person we felt was very reasonable given we'd each had an entree each(plus we'd ordered the 2 extra small plates of sushi rolls to share) as well as a main meal each.

An excellent dining experience and one we will look forward to enjoying again soon!

Saturday night was our first visit back in a while as last time we went it was Asahi which we didn't particularly enjoy and weren’t in a hurry to go back. With the name change and some good EWA reviews we made a booking for four and the partner and I found easy parking out the front at just before 7pm with our friends arriving soon after.

We were shown efficiently to our seats and given menus, though not offered water. We were brought some after asking for it when putting in entrée orders, though in small glasses that needed to be refilled pretty regularly which didn't really happen

First impression of the service is reasonable efficiency, though despite there being adequate waitstaff especially for the smaller numbers early in the evening they needed a little prompting to take orders or refill water glasses. No problems when you had their attention, you just needed to catch their eye which was not always easy to do.

Entrees of vegetarian spring rolls, Tataki beef and prawn katsu were ordered and delivered fairly promptly, though in 2 deliveries. Everyone was happy with theirs; my beef tataki was high quality, well made and very enjoyable.

Again the mains came in 2 separate deliveries with a longer wait for them than what we had for the entrees but with the possible exception of a vegetarian curry it was worth the wait. The other mains of Prawn tempura, Sashimi, and a Sashimi set menu impressed their respective diners with scores being 4 stars to 4 stars + in these cases.

The Prawn tempura had large tasty prawns in a light batter, no heavy-handed oiliness or grease and a good match for the great sashimi. The sashimi was a generous sized serving with the sashimi set menu also including miso soup, rice and some cleansing fruit which our friend enjoyed. Our vegetarian co-diner wasn’t very impressed with the curry but felt that it was not really her style rather than any problems with the ingredients or preparation.

By the time we had finished our mains the restaurant was quite full with a lively, though not overpowering buzz as the space is quite small. Tables are pretty close together so extricating yourself can take some contortion, particularly if you are next to the wall, though the layout is such that apart from arriving and leaving the neighbours won’t impact your space. The fitout is clean but basic, no fussiness but a little sterile. We certainly didn’t feel inspired to stay around to try deserts or coffee, instead leaving to try our luck at the Globe over the road.

For four of us including corkage, 3 entrees and 4 mains with rice the total was $120 which was very good for the food quality, the ambience and service doesn’t quite match it but isn’t bad in any way, we would certainly go back.

I've only been there once and this is one of those great Japanese foods that you can't really forget. The place is easily accessible through Beaufort St just near Subway and Bliss Noodle if you now where it is. It used to be called Asahi but they changed to Hanami. Now the food is really great and delicious. I had Tempura Udon set and Beef Tataki as appetizer and my partner ordered California Tobiko Roll, which all of them taste very excellent. The price wasn’t really bad compared to other Japanese, which range from $10-$30 for the main course. Service is lovely also and waiters were friendly to us. The place is clean and relaxing. Overall I really like this place. I’ve been to a couple Japanese restaurants and this definitely one of the best. I also noticed the owner (or maybe cook) of Good Fortune restaurant in William St had dinner with his family there and he seems to know the owner as well. And don’t worry about parking either because there is plenty of free parking near the place. The next time I will dine there again for sure!

Our current favourite japanese restaurant! Must book a table early or you won't get in. They also have 3 traditional tatami seated tables. It can get a little noisy, and is always full of people at dinner time.

My husband always gets the sashimi, and says it very fresh and well prepared, and he should know, as he has worked in a restaurant in Japan which specialised in sashimi (he only washed the dishes, but ate sashimi daily!). I usually have the "unagi" or the "tempura" which is freshly cooked with very light batter. Good portion sizes for most dishes, and our favourite sushi is the "prawn tempura", which is divine.

It is also BYO, and the staff are efficient, if not run off their feet most off the time.

Wow I expected this place to be good after reading the reviews but I think good is an understatement - sensational would be more apt.

My partner and I went for dinner last night (Monday night) lucky we booked as all the tables were reserved. We were starving when we arrived so we had appetites to try quite a few things off the menu.

We started with Prawn Goyza and Beef Tataki, both sensational (be warned the Tataki comes with a lot of garlic) they got the appetites going.

We then had a second course of a medium Assorted Sashimi which took our breath away. It made me realise how average the sashimi is in your average Japanese restaurant. It literally melted in the mouth. I swear I dreamt about how good it was.

Then for our third course we had the Chicken Teriyaki and Katsudon Bentos, which did not let us down and we managed to munch through most of it.

The service was great. The atmosphere relaxed and the Food 5 out of 5.

This is my new favorite Japanese restaurant....hmmm is it too much to get take away from there tonight!

Had a very pleasant lunch at Asahi recently. We shared an order of gyoza, which was very light and tasty, and each had the assorted sushi platter. The bill came to just under $40 for 2 of us, and the sushi was fresh, though a couple of the rolls fell apart. I wasn't crazy about the beef one, but on the whole was very happy. I've been here at night and found it noisy and crowded, but for lunch it was a tranquil place with tasteful, understated decor and perfectly adequate service. As opposed to the previous reviewer, we were given tap water and didn't need to buy bottled.

Came here with friends for Thursday dinner, and was very impressed.

Definitely book ahead, as it can apparently get quite busy and there aren't a great number of tables. There are two cool special tables which make the experience even better if you can get them. ;)

Many of the earlier reviews mentioned bad service, but we found the service to be fine. Maybe they've improved recently? One thing that was annoying was that they don't offer free bottles of water for the table - you have to buy mineral water if you want it.

We were seated right away and orders were taken right as we were ready, then meals came out quite quickly. So all good there.

We all had teppanyaki (I had the beef, and my friends had the fish and salmon ones) which were all delicious. A must for fans of garlic and onion - bring mints. :P
Everything was nice and fresh, very tasty... The beef was delicious and how I asked for it.

Ooh, and make sure you try the plum wine! It's so sweet and syrupy... I'm not a wine person, but I loved it.

With drinks, it cost us $25 a head for a yummy Japanese meal. I really need to move to Mt Lawley!

This has to be one of my new favorites amongst Japanese restaurants. I stumbled in here by accident with a friend of mine, looking for a meal in Mt Lawley. It’s got reasonable prices, decent size servings and good service. The place is a little small, so you'll want to book if you go there for dinner. They have a killer prawn katsu as an entrée which is like prawn tempura with a thick tasty dipping sauce. 5-6 large prawns for about $9 IIRC. Very nice. Their teriyaki dishes are also very good. I've enjoyed the fish, beef and chicken. Beware of the miso soup in their set menus - they have perfected the art of making it thermo nuclear hot so you will scorch your mouth if you are not careful :)

Service is good and quick, if they are busy though it’s good to make eye contact to get attention. Oh, if you are looking for it on whereis then search for Hanamis - they have changed their name a few months ago.

Tried Asahi for the first time on Friday night and I was pleasantly surprised.

After reading some of the earlier reviews, I expected bad service, but it definitely seems to have improved in recent months. We were seated promptly and our orders were taken not long after. The food came out together; our tea cups were never empty and so polite! So thumbs up for the service.

The food was very good and reasonably priced. I had the vegetable tempura and the tamago maki, both exceeding my expectations. I was told that the vegetable curry (which comes with miso, rice and salad) was average; however, this is a Japanese restaurant, so probably not their specialty (first time I have encountered curry in a Japanese place).
Green tea ice cream for dessert was sooo good!

The ambience was a little lacking, not really due to the decor, but more to do with the noise level. It is a small place and the tables are quite close together, so this is expected.

But I would definitely return, for the food (and the service).

The food at Asahi is just delicious and always the freshest.

Yes, it is always cold in there, so bring a cardigan.

And make sure you book ahead so you don't miss out or have to wait around.

My personal favourites on the menu (having been to Asahi many times) are the entrée beef tataki and gyoza. For mains, i tend to get the bento/meal set. I find the beef teriyaki or the chirashi are my favourites, but the other ones i have tried were top-notch too.

With regard to the service, i have never had that big a problem with it. The ladies are so lovely and polite and i haven't had to wait too long for anything. However, i did see them clear the table for a couple of people who had just stood up for a cigarette and come back. (In truth, how could you appreciate the lovely fresh food with a palate dulled by cigarettes??) It was pretty funny to watch.

I went to Asahi for the second time on the weekend with a good friend. For starters we shared the fried chicken with a creamy dipping sauce which was delicious. I chose the mixed tempura and udon for my main (my friend opting for the vegetable tempura due to her smaller appetite), which was a very generous size with plenty of prawns. The udon was very nice, very traditional tasting and the miso flavour not to overpoweringly salty. For dessert we had the green tea icecream which is an absolutely yummy treat (much nicer than the one sold at Gelare!). Our meal was accompanied by green tea, a particularly light and refreshing tasting one.

This restaurant definitely has the best tasting Japanese food around, attractively presented and very reasonably priced ($30 each for us, which included shared entree, main and desert each and tea for two). Despite negative feedback on the service by other reviewers, we found the service prompt and polite, our teapot topped up regularly without asking staff and at the end of the night when the place was packed, I was pleased to find out desserts arrived only about 5 minutes after ordering (perhaps they have read the complaints???!!)

The only thing that dissuades me is the lack of ambience, the place small and more like a 'cafe' or hawker restaurant. This is okay for casual meals, but perhaps not a place for a romantic dinner or a special occasion.

Overall, would definitely go back for the food.

As others have already said, Asahi has a problem with the service. It is also an ice box - I have always been cold in this place!

The food is excellent, though, and I encourage everyone to eat there at least once. But make sure you get a copy of the takeaway menu - the freshly made sushi is amazing, particularly the chicken. We often call ahead and pick some up on the way home.

This place is fantastic! For people who love great Japanese food at a very reasonable price, this place is for you. Since the closing of Kyoto's Restaurant in William Street, this place offers the best range and quality of Japanese food in Perth.

Try the multitude of entrees and don't stick to the basic teriyakis and sushis. This place offers some real treats for people prepared to explore a little.

Japanese is never cheap but I have always managed to get out of this place with a massive feed for around $20 to $25 (and even cheaper if your tastes are a little conservative)... and I'm talking about a feed that leaves the top of your pants undone.

Don't go to this place expecting silver service. Go there knowing you will be treated to some great food and have a laugh to yourself if you feel the waitress has forgotten about you. They mean well, they are lovely ladies and as soon as the food is delivered, you could marry them.

This little japanese restaurant seem to be a popular haunt for a diverse range of people.

The decor seems relatively authentic and modern. Not fine dining but very comfortable and tasteful.

We order different nori rolls to share for entree. They were all delicious, probably the best I've had. Service was a bit disorganised they came up to us about 2 minutes after we had sat down and when we didn't order then we wished we had because it took a bit of effort to get them to come back over to take our order.

For mains I had teriyaki chicken. It was also very tasty. I even managed to eat my whole dish with chopsticks which is quite a feat for me!

One problem was they have split system wall units and the aircon was right above me and I was freezing!

BYO: Yes - Wine only
Entree: $7-$15
Main: $10-$20

Possible the most annoying dichotomy in dining!

For a place that serves such good Japanese food, it's amazing that they cannot seem to get their service to the same standard.

The sashimi and sushi are top notch, fresh and tasty, and the warm dishes have wonderful flavours and always leave you wanting more.

The fact that the prices are so low can only be attributed to them not paying the staff enough!

The last visit saw 4 of us walk out after 1 platter of sashimi, 2 platters of sushi, and 2 mains of chicken and scallop Teppan Yaki, having only paid $100 for the lot. And this was by no means a small dining event.

If i were to end the review after discussing the food alone, the result would 4 stars easy. However that would be far from the whole story.

For some reason every time i have been here, i've had to wait for 5 minutes to be spoken to, much less seated by, a staff member. They all scurry around doing their job of serving and cleaning, with a seeming indifference to the paying punters trying to get a table. Weird.

Now the waiting times are another split affair... the first course of sashimi arrived in almost no time at all, swiftly followed by the first sushi. After ordering a second assorted sushi the wait was considerably longer, and had to be requested from the staff twice more. The hot mains arrived in pretty snappy time, however, yet the second bottle of wine we had brought took forever to get retrieved from their fridge.

Indeed a curious situation considering the cultural dining idiosyncrasies associated with the Japanese.

If only they could resolve the service aspect, this would really be a top class Japanese dining experience.

Please please please...
