Hayashi used to have a good reputation, but after a recent visit there I certainly won't be going back again.

The entrance is enticing enough, suggesting a higher-end dining establishment. Once inside however, the decor & seating layout leave much to be desired. Plain tables & chairs set up in an uninspiring layout made for a weak first impression.

How about the food then? Average, to be honest, bordering on poor considering the price which is a bit dearer than most Japanese restaurants. The flying fish roe on the sushi was mushy, and the sashimi wasn't fresh at all.

The only upside is the good service. Well, it has to be when there were 4 waitresses attending only 3 tables...

Want Japanese? Well, you can certainly do better than Hayashi.

My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant on a whim on Saturday night. We shared mixed sashimi for entrée which was quite good, especially the tuna, really silky smooth. For mains we got seafood duo teppanyaki and mixed tempura. The mixed tempura was exactly that, mixed. The tempura vegies seemed pretty half-hearted but the prawns were nice and the fish was great. I didn’t try the teppanyaki but I was informed that it was good, but the vegies were lukewarm at best. Our waitress was polite and attentive, for once I’m not complaining about waitstaff! They could use something a little more interesting on the walls rather than the plain white bamboo prints and I imagine the tiled floors could make things noisy when the restaurant is full but hey, it’s all good really.

Won't be going back again! We use to go to Hayashi a lot 4 years ago, as I lived nearby. Then it changed owner a few years ago, and it has gone downhill ever since.

The first time we tried it after it changed owners, they ran out of rice, can you believe that!! There were four of us, and they served 2 of us our Mains...after waiting about 15 minutes, we asked when the other Mains were getting served, and that's when they told us that they were just cooking more rice!

We thought we would give it another go and went back again in September 2006. The food and service was just OK. We happened to be in the area 2 nights ago, and thought we would try it again and see if it had improved.

It was a Monday night, and there was one waitress on the floor, with another waiter handling the takeaway orders. She showed us to our seats, and brought us our Japanese tea, then didn't come back for ages, before we called her over to take our order. It wasn't exactly busy!!

We both ordered "Bento Boxes" and the food was reasonable, but that's all. My husband had a "chicken teriyaki bento", and I had an "unagi bento". I have tasted better "unagi" at Hanami in Mt. Lawley and Sado Island in Claremont. The waitress was polite, but the restaurant lacked ambience, and was rather cold on this particular night.

There are definitely better Japanese restaurants in Perth!

I eat a lot of Japanese food and this is by far my favourite.

They have the freshest and best quality sashimi in any Japanese restaurant in Perth (yes, even better than Matsuri!)

I highly recommend the katsu and karaage, though I haven’t tried anything from there that I didn’t like.

The Owner is a very friendly and chatty man who is always smiling and helpful.

The décor isn’t of the highest standard but it is clean with large, widely spaced tables. The food always prepared quickly and is excellent quality.

Tried this Japanese Restaurant tonight for my son's 11th birthday dinner. Service was fast and food was very fresh. I highly recommend the chicken teriyaki. the Sashimi was also nice and fresh. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They even offered to take the photo of everyone. The place was simply decorated with Asian lanterns nothing fancy. When I rang to book in our table last week, we were accidentally booked in to the wrong date so the table wasn't ready when we arrived but it was good that the place was not full packed otherwise I would not be a happy camper :-)

Anyway, that was an honest mistake although they should make sure they are booking customers in to the correct dates and days. Anyway, they had Azzura Ice cream desserts, I only had a hot chocolate which I would admit was very nice. I'm very picky when it comes to hot chocolates. Overall, it was a pleasant experience; price was good and would visit again.

As a regular visitor to this restaurant I highly recommend it. Very well priced for Japanese food. BYO and licenced. The food is always very fresh which is important for Japanese food. Friendly service. Great restaurant for just the two of you or for larger groups.
