i loved this restaurant we had the mixed meats for starters of ostrich, camel, croc & something else it was beautiful & they cook the meat to perfection then i had the hunters assegai for main which is enormous i have been here twice & thoroughly enjoyed it both times i even had the set-up for the hunters assegai made up so i can do it at home if you have the 1kg steak & eat it all you get a pic for the wall which makes the dining exp even nicer!!

Meat. If meat is important to you, this is the place to go. I am very fussy about how my steak is cooked and all other restaurants now have to live up to Hippo's standard.

The entrance is hard to find, the parking is lousy, the atmosphere is pretty good, the service attentive without being overbearing. Who cares about any of that when the meat is soooo good. If you're into a big feed, you can't go past the Lion Kill. The 1Kg T-bone was a novelty, but around the end I was thinking 'this is just too much steak.' Then I slapped myself around a bit for heresy.

Bring your cardiologist with you. Leave the vegetarians at home.

I really enjoyed the experience of Hippo Creek. I see a lot of you complain about the appearance, but I thought it was funky and had a very relaxed atmosphere. We had to wait 3 weeks to get a booking for 8 people on a Saturday night. We found the service to be excellent; we were always looked after and attended to regularly. I had the sirloin cooked rare, and it was the most divine steak I have ever tasted. We also enjoyed the biltong for an entree, along with beers, delicious! The Mudhuts, which are stuffed mushrooms were beautiful, the sword was delightful, and the surf and turf was to die for. We thoroughly enjoyed every morsel, and will be going back regularly. For all you meat eaters out there, this is the place for the best steak in Perth. YUM!!!

My partner has been trying to get me to go to Hippo Creek with him for the last year while I have been dragging my feet but alas he got me there!

Ok so as stated the interior is rather shabby but one expects that from the pokey front entrance and it is not why you go there.

For entree we shared the BBQ skewers of mixed meat; camel, ostrich and crocodile. It was $33 for 3 skewers, yes $33. Had we not been there to try something different we definitely would not have paid this! The ostrich and the camel were nice but pretty similar to steak. The crocodile was like sweet but extremely tough chicken.

Mains we ordered chicken curry (mine), fish or the day, a lion's kill, and the crocodile fettuccine. While my expectations were low as I knew I should be ordering a steak here, my dish was delightful and has guaranteed my return. My partner's fish of the day was also divine, the swordfish fillet was the thickest I have seen and cooked to perfection. Our friend's Lion's Kill was reported as average, something that could be found anywhere, and the crocodile fettuccine only got touched twice as the crocodile was impossible to cut through, let alone chew.

The wait for food was a bit tedious, especially considering we went at 6.30 so the restaurant was still quite empty, and the staff while friendly were clueless about the menu. I think in a restaurant that promotes itself as unusual needs to have staff that can promote the menu capably to diners.

Entertainment cards brought the price down but overall not enough to match the experience. We would probably go back but not for the expected steak of game meat!

We went to Hippo Creek this week and it was pretty average. Firstly, the overall feel of the place is that is needs a good scrub down. The service is lacking and we had to ask 3 times for some ice for our wine. The steaks are not fantastic; I don't think they are aged like they say they are. It is very noisy inside the restaurant and I found myself missing out on conversation because it is just so loud! Overall, it is an average restaurant and besides the novelty of the 1 kilo steak and having your picture taken, it does not have much to offer.

If you are after a really large serve of meat - this is the place to go! :-)

We finally made it here for dinner Friday night. I’m not a huge red meat fan but the rest of my party are.

Yes the decor, entrance etc is pretty pokey but I don’t really notice (as I’ve been here many times before - used to be Thai, then a Japanese restaurant)

For entrees we ordered the mixed meat plate (skewers of camel, ostrich and crocodile) served with a bbq and peri peri sauce. I liked all three of the meats which surprised me! We also ordered some smoked south african sausage which came with dips and corn chips and the mushroom/cheese hats which were delish and came with a creamy garlic sauce.

As for the mains I simply had to order the hunters assaghai! It looks so impressive. It was very tasty too and the garlic butter that runs through it (and onto your chips mmm) is divine (and smelly!).

The meat was very tasty (very red) so if you like your meat medium rare I would order it medium as you will get it rare/medium rare anyways!

Others choices enjoyed by the table were the mixed grill (steak, sausages, 2 chops, ribs, chips and salad), the lions kill (steak, ribs, chips and salad) and the ostrich steak (which also comes with chips and salad). Basically everything comes with chips and simple salad which was what we expected. There are quite a few different options on the menu if wish for something lighter though - a stir-fry, a chicken dish, fish of day etc…but really you wouldn’t come here for those meals anyway.

All meals were very much enjoyed although there was a lot of leftover meat! Everyone left very full indeed (and very happy!)

Service was great although they had no South African beers available (supply problems) Using a couple of entertainment cards meant that the final bill was very pleasing too!

Never mind the door and whether you can find it - it’s the food we care about no? So - this seems to have been _the_ hip and happening steak house in Perth in the last 6 months. The first few times I visited they had very good steak, a good selection of side dishes and very interesting serving techniques. They have since become so popular that it is impossible to get a seat unless you book weeks in advance. You'd think that would do good things for business and the product quality. Alas it has not. They removed several side dishes including my favorite onion rings. The steak I had last time was a touch fatty despite having ordered the fillet. Prices are quite high and given their wavering quality control, I'd be inclined to say it’s too much. The steak sauces were far better in the beginning than now. Yes you can get exotic dishes like camel and crocodile, but they won’t cook it to everyone's liking. Some of us don’t like it dripping with blood still.

I have been to Hippo Creek a few times, and yes the entrance is dodgy, and considering that they get booked out, I would think they would move to bigger/better premises.

My DH likes the Hunters Asaghi but a bit under cooked for my liking.

A friend of ours had the 1kg T-bone, and was disappointed; he said he would have gotten more meat if he ate the Asaghi, as it was mainly bone.

I ordered the same thing when I went there, the sirloin, and it is always cooked perfect (I like it with no pink at all).

We will definitely be going back.

I think that Teamster is being a bit harsh.

Yes Hippo Creek is a suburban restaurant. It is an African Grill and its forte is meat.

Having said that, the meat is pretty good. I had the Hunters Asaghi which is a skewer of meat (they say 500g but I think that it was possibly more) hung vertically to allow a ball of chilli garlic butter melt over the meat.

The meat was cooked perfectly.

All of the meat is cooked rare, or medium rare, but with good quality meat that is the only way to eat it. All of their meat is supposedly aged 21 days but I asked to see a 1kg T-Bone and they brought out a large frozen T-bone in plastic trays and cryopacked, so I do not know how the beast is aged for 21 days.

The decor. Well it does not remind me of anywhere that I have been to in Africa, but it is definitely African themed and that is nice. It is different, and there is very little that you would see in any other restaurant. You have to remember that this is a nosh house, it is not silver service.

The doorway... I total agree with Teamster, the doorway is inappropriate. Also, I do not think that the rogues gallery is in keeping with the rest of the restaurant.

I will definitely be going back. For a family birthday, a boys night out, a holiday meal, it is good honest fare.....as long as you like meat.

As an addendum to the first review, i thought a follow up was owed.

I returned to Hippo Creek recently, and while most of the initial observations stand, i feel the most recent visit fared slightly better.

This time i tried the variety meat platter for entree which consisted of crocodile, ostrich and buffalo (the buffalo was a replacement for the normal camel which was unavailable that night).

All provided a little something different to the norm; however the buffalo came out a tad tough, maybe due to being overcooked slightly.

For the main i again tried the buffalo, which this time came out rarer and far better. It had a nice gamey taste and i enjoyed this a bit more than the Hunters Asaghi i tried on the previous visit.

It was enjoyable, but i'm still left with the impression that the whole focus is on the quantity of meat in each dish as opposed to exotic tastes.

I stand by my first review for the most part, but i would still recommend a visit, especially if large meals are your forte.
