My first experience at il Lido about 4 months ago was great. The menu, which has unfortunately remained stagnant since, is, as they say, inspired by peasant food; simple, authentic, full of flavour, albeit with a contemporary twist. The gnocchi, pappardelle, zucchini fritter, taleggio and radicchio risotto, and panzanella are excellent; the olives, wonderful; fish cooked to perfection. However, the quality of the cooking has slowly lost its magic and lacks consistency; eggplant parmigiana made with pickled eggplant soaking in oil; gritty lettuce; identical garnishes reminiscent of Italian chain restaurants; dry tiramisu'; a pungent cheesy, rice-stuffed roasted tomato accompaniment to fine barramundi? Room for improvement.
There is one outstanding waiter who is intelligent and flexible. The rest don't seem to take as much initiative and lack the skill of dealing with complaints effectively so service can be erratic and sometimes disappointing.
This is the kind of restaurant where you could spend your whole afternoon. Breakfast is buzzy, lunch, long and langourous and dinner, sophisticated and fashionable. Good music. Great location. Cool decor.
Overall:
Overall, we keep going back because it's such a great space to be in! The long, communal tables lend a convivial feel and provide an easy view of the rest of the menu but the food doesn't always impress, and I cringe at some of the prices in relation to what you get, especially dessert and cheese. Wine is reasonably priced and available by shadow, glass or bottle. The menu needs desperate attention and could reflect the seasons more but overall a good place for a long meal with friends.
