Overall:
too hot to cook at home so stopped off to what is a fairly new restaurant in East Perth...not quite on the canal but one street back in Royal Street...have been once before but every time we have driven past lately it has been chockers...tables out on the street as well...
typical Italian restaurant, red & white tablecloths etc. etc. and the air conditioning works a treat... hasn't quite got the same Italian feel as Ciao Italia or the frenetic aura of organised chaos and there is certainly more room between tables so i guess a lot of people will prefer that...personally, i love it...
our first time there was midweek and the service was spot on, informative and attentive...the second time was a saturday evening and there seemed to be less staff and consequently the service was much less impressive...we had no real complaints but after the first experience i guess we expected a bit more...
as for the food, it was excellent...i had Lasagane iLPasto so i could have a direct comparison with Ciao's lasagne and it came out very favourably...at $15 it was a few dollars cheaper but lacked nothing in taste and whilst there was a predominance of pasta over meat the sauce was excellent, although when i make it myself i load it up with more tomato... possibly could have been a little hotter but i'm pretty fussy so it was probably ok for the average diner...the working half of the family had penne (if my memory serves me right) and whilst she said it was good she tasted my lasagne and wished she'd ordered the same...
one tip though, we were offered water when we arrived, it was bottled so it cost $2, no problem there but order the 'big' bottle because the 'small' bottle costs $2 as well...
overall, i preferred the Ciao Italia experience marginally but really only because of the ambience of the place which i realise is not to everyone's liking...however iL Pasto is definitely worth a visit if you are after Italian fare at very reasonable prices...looking forward to going back when it's not so hot so we can sit in the middle of Royal Street and watch the world go by...certainly a good addition to the mix available around the East Perth canal...
