Welcome to Joe's Fish Shack

Joe's Fish Shack

Visit Fishing Boat Harbour and you're guaranteed of seeing jaws in action. They will be devouring fresh snapper, juicy barramundi and freshly caught crayfish at Fremantle's funkiest restaurant:- Joe's Fish Shack.

After years of catching fish, Joe decided to cook them instead. Joe's attitude to seafood is simple. If it's not the best you can get, you won't find it on his tables.

See Sea. Whatever you order at Joe's you'll find it comes served with water. An Indian Ocean full in fact. Not content with a restaurant near to water, Joe actually built it on the water, overlooking Fishing Boat Harbour. You can dine in air-conditioned comfort, or outside on the expansive outdoor deck. You won't find a better spot to spend a Sunny Lunch or Moonlit Dinner.....or a Sunny Lunch that turns into a Moonlit Dinner.

Tap Beer, Imported Beers, Spirits and Cocktails are also on offer. Ever since his fishing days in the gulf of Mexico, no one makes a meaner Margarita than Joe.

Opening Times Open daily 11:30am to late

Food:

Overpriced. The menu was disappointing, with the battered fish being NZ hake. Three of us ordered Spanish mackerel and all was dry and flavorless ($27 approx). One of our group ordered Barramundi (her favourite fish) and she described it as 'very ordinary' ($30). The stuffed prawns were acceptable. All meals came with chips and coleslaw.

Service:

The meals arrived so promptly, we could only conclude the meals were pre-cooked and kept warm ready to serve. Perhaps this explains the quality of the meal.

Ambience:

We liked the decor and the outlook on boat harbour is very enjoyable.

Overall:
Based on our experience we would not recommend Joe's Fish Shack. It is overpriced, under flavoured and a limited menu. The saving grace is the view.

Went to Joe's Fish Shack on sunset - although a bit dazzling for a while - it was very impressive sitting watching the sunset.

The Ambience was good - busy, casual restaurant and everyone seemed to be having a good time and lots of oh-ahs when their food arrived.

I had the Seafood platter for one (which is huge) and my partner had stuffed prawns - both were delicious.

The service was also very good, the best I've had in a long time - there were lots of wait staff and they were attentive, polite and professional.

Overall, I was very impressed and had a lovely evening.

Recently re-visited Joe's after a few years of avoiding it because it's always so hard to park down at Fishermans Wharf. We had a fair walk, but there was a lot to look at along the way as the place was buzzing.

The service was good - plenty of wait staff all over the restaurant.

We ordered the hot seafood platter (chefs special of the day at approx. $120). The mussels, prawns, crayfish and salt & pepper squid were very good. The fish (of which there was probably too much) was extremely dry and tasteless. There was a mound of (maybe saffron) rice under the cray shell - which also was tasteless. Perhaps some salad (which really costs nothing) would be a better idea.

Overall we were very full and happy with our choice - and with the entertainment card we were able to save $25 - which is probably more as the price should have been.

I'll start by saying the service was great, very attentive staff and food came out quickly.

Now onto the food. I think i had the best meal of our group. 8 x Spring rolls $8.95 and a bowl of chips $6.00. A bit hard to stuff that up.

2 ladies had the entree sized grilled mackerel $18.95 the fish was hard & tough, and no flavour.

Another of our table had 6 oysters kilpatrick $3.00 each., they looked nice but lacked flavour.

Most of the food wasn't really worth what was paid.

Drinks - post mix machine was playing up and we had to return a couple of drinks. My Iced Chocolate was nice was was luke warm, even with the ice & icecream in it.

Ambience - Even though the restaurant was quite empty we were seating next to a large table, which filled up after we ordered and it ended up feeling like we were in a school cafeteria, loud and could barely hear ourselves talk.

I went to Joe's for dinner on Saturday night with a large group of friends. We were seated on the end table at the far corner of the restaurant overlook the harbour. The view was fantastic after the sunset but for a while we were caught out by the bright summer light.

I ordered the Marinara pasta, it taste unexpectedly good. I enjoyed thick texture of the sauce and the freshness of the ingredients. The portion is somewhat smaller than i normally used to but being a small person it was filling enough.

We didn't have to wait long for our food to arrive after we have made the order but I find that the service was barely adequate, the minimal was offered.

The Marinara pasta dish cost $26.95 which i thought was overpriced for a pasta dish but the taste was worth it.

Overall, I would go to Joe's Fish Shack for the food but not for the dining experience.

We visited for an early 5pm dinner and it wasn't very busy. We ordered drinks and some water. The water came soon after and we proceeded to order marinara pasta and a grilled Spanish mackerel with chips.

After waiting for 20-25 minutes for our drinks, we realised that it had been forgotten. When our food were brought over by one of the managers, we asked for our drinks and he was apologetic and asked who took the order. Our drinks came shortly after.

The spaghetti was a little bit over al dente. The Napolitano sauce that goes with it was good and the seafood was fresh. The Spanish mackerel was nicely grilled but the chips weren’t crunchy and were warm, not hot.

Overall the service wasn't really there. The place seemed to be staffed by people who didn't want to be there, except for the manager who brought us our food and drinks.

Like previous reviewers we have liked dining at this restaurant but were disappointed on our last visit. It has a great location looking over the fishing boat harbour but the view is not the be all and end all.

The seafood platter for one was a rather lazy and unimaginative dish, large piece of battered fish, a few salt and pepper squid, one stuffed prawn, a small bowl mussels, a few chips and no salad included.

While being well cooked and tasty for the price charged it does not rank against a similar dish at any other Fremantle restaurant. The garlic prawns were a little better presented but on a mound of potato mash? lucky I like spuds. There was evidence of kitchen laziness in the preparation of the dish. The intestinal tract had not been removed from the prawns resulting in several gritty prawns. This is unforgivable for a seafood restaurant and spoiled what was a tasty dish.

The problem may be that the menu has not changed as far as I can tell from when we first dined here in 1983.

Service has never been outstanding being a bit hit and miss with some tables being over serviced and others getting very poor service, maybe the faces do not fit. We did at least have our table cleared after mains but then were neglected so we went elsewhere for coffee.

The only reason we would go back to this 'shack' is because it in the Entertainment Book.

We recently decided on lunch at Joe’s after being in the area and my husband having a craving for some seafood. It wasn’t too busy for a Saturday afternoon and there was a good mix of diners. Service was a little slow and once we had ordered our drinks, we did have to get another waitress’ attention to take the order for our meals. Disappointed that there were no scallops on the menu, we both decided on a seafood platter each. During the wait for our meals we had a good chance to look around. I really liked the casual decorating and ambiance of the building and there was lots of memorabilia to look at if you were too far away from the view out the window. We noticed lots of empty, dirty tables that just never got cleaned. Wait staff were constantly walking past the tables empty handed, completely oblivious to the dirty glasses, cutlery and food spills.

Our platters arrived and we had a mixture of Salt and Pepper Squid, Chilli Mussels, a piece of battered fish, chips, 2 dipping sauces and a Spinach and Bacon stuffed prawn. My husband is allergic to prawns so he was happy with the two Oysters Kilpatrick that he received instead. The meal was nice and it was filling. Like a previous review said, it was oily (as you would expect with deep frying, but it could have been drained better) but the mussels were tasty (no hint of chilli though), the squid was tender and my stuffed prawn was divine.

We stopped to chat to some friends of ours on the way out and seeing our meals arrive, they had ordered the same thing. But it was interesting to see that their serves (especially the squid) were a lot smaller than ours, not consistent. When we went to pay the waitress gave us the wrong bill, then couldn’t actually find ours anywhere so rang up what we told her we had, undercharged us and didn’t crack a hint of a smile the whole time. Our meal was just over $60 for the two of us and it did hit the spot but we won’t be racing back any time soon.

The best thing about this place was my main, the char-grilled Tasmanian Salmon.

However great it tasted though, I just could not finish it! The serving was great! It's a good idea to book as it is busy and make sure you turn up within half hour of booking time or risk losing your booking. Overall, I would recommend this place for a nice meal with a great view and fresh sea breezes for a hot summer night but perhaps ask the waiter to repeat the order (we got served natural oysters instead of Kilpatrick and a Greek salad instead of a garden one.) Oh and if you don't mind the girl at the register throwing your cards and receipt around. It’s a great casual place with great food.

I've been frequenting Joe's with my wife recently, and it's my new favourite seafood place in Fremantle.

I don't go for fish and chips, as the price is a little lofty. But the 'seafood platter for one' is my usual. A nice selection of fish, squid, mussels at a reasonable price. And I typically order oysters as well - the most consistent oysters in Perth! Always fresh, always sizeable.

Service is generally slow because of how busy Joe's is, but the quality of the food makes that irrelevant.

Well Done Joe. Your restaurant is superb.

I am a fussy old fisherman, who also used to run a good old fashioned seafood business in Beaconsfield. The family comes from a long line of fishermen, so we really know our trade.

I visit your restaurant all the time, and finally had to give you some feedback. (well my son is helping me, as I am not so good with this stuff)

When you arrive at Joe's, you feel as if you have left all the hustle and bustle behind. Joe's sits literally atop of Fishing Boat Harbour in Fremantle. From our regular table, we look out a pelicans fighting for their lunch with the resident dolphins (who needs monkey mia). The music is right up my alley, a blend of old fashioned blues and jazz that puts you in the mood.

The staff at Joe's must be applauded. They are always smiling, pleasant and helpful. Nothing is ever too much trouble. They are not pretentious, even though they proudly display their many awards on the wall at the entrance.

The food at Joe's is fantastico. Good old fashioned servings. You will never leave hungry that is for sure. The quality of the seafood is top notch. They do not play around with it too much, that is what I like. If you know seafood, then you know that you must let the flavours of the food speak for themselves. This is what Joe does best.

Lastly, the prices are very reasonable. Nobody minds paying for quality, but Joe's seems to have covered this angle as well.

All the best to the staff for a job well done
Tony
