Singaporean Restaurant in Floreat WA

Overall:
My girlfriend and I have visited this restaurant a few times now. My parents, who have been frequenting this restaurant since the early 1980s when it used to be on Murray St. Perth, still hold such a high regard for this restaurant. The decor and settings are very modest and although it does not jump out at you, it is comfortable and welcoming. It can be quiet on some nights but weekends see the restaurant very busy.
Service was fine with an expected wait during the busy hours. The staff are warm and friendly and you get the feel that it truly is a family owned and operated restaurant.
The food is something to behold. With extremely generous portions, the prices are not unreasonable for Perth. The spice, the authentic South-East Asian taste makes the food so appealing to me. This is the type of food I expect when I am eating back home in Malaysia. The noodles are superb and their tom yam soup is really something else! I love the samosas and won tons with the occasional san choy bow. You really can't go wrong so if you are looking for the Singaporean flair in your food, Katong is the place to eat!
Overall:
I have been going to Katong for at least 15 years - since it was downstairs in Murray Street up near Fast Eddy's. It used to do a massive midweek lunch trade but since moving to Floreat, the lunches have diminished to just Friday (really just to cater to the regulars) but it is quite busy at nights.
The strongest selling point is that the food quality has remained the same throughout all those years. The cooking is done by the owners Charles and Yvonne Lim and maintains a base of Singoporean dishes.
The fried wontons are light and crispy. They are mandatory and our regular Friday lunch group operates on four per head. The noodle dishes are invariably excellent, including a couple of noodle soups, but my favourite dish remains the szechuan chicken with dried chilli and cashew. This is a fearsome looking dish that comes in a steel bowl with dozens of blackened chillis peeking out of a pile of chicken pieces swimming in a salty soy gravy. It may look dangerous but it tastes delicious. The almond chicken is a good dish, ginger beef or chicken is reliable and the rendang and roast duck excellent dishes to share with a big group.
Service can be hit and miss and the ambience is modest though welcoming. The key is the food though. It is spicy and highly reliable. I don't know anyone who has been there who hasn't wanted to go back.

I got take away from Katong recently and the food was tasty and delicious. I ordered beef rendang which was fantastic, spicy as it should be!! The chicken curry was great also. If you like "nonyang" or Singapore food try this place!!
