Welcome to Lanna Thai Cuisine

Lanna Thai Cuisine

Lanna in Thai means "land of a million rice fields" and is the name of the ancient kingdom once held away in the region.

The name evokes images of the dynamic and thriving realm that once covered what is now northern Thailand, from Sipsongpanna, China in the North to Tak in the South. From Mekong River in the East to the Salween River in the West. Chiang Mai is the heart of The Lanna.

Food:

My reservations about ordering Tom Kha as an entree (as opposed to the other Thai specialties like curry puffs and golden bags) diminished as quickly as the dish, the remains of which I fought over with my pregnant dining partner. My (much smaller) share was delicious - lots of lemongrass, coriander root and other aromatic goodies in a creamy coconut soup with crunchy fresh vegies. She won that contest, but didn't stand a chance against my belly for the shared mains of prawn Pad Thai and vegetarian green curry. The Pad Thai, in particular, was very good - though four prawns seemed a bit stingy. At least it was an even number, which made the cutlery warfare a little easier.

Service:

Service was friendly, but a bit patchy. The mains took almost an hour to arrive, by which time I was contemplating eating the Tom Kha splatters off the tablecloth/napkins/my shirt. As is often the case in Chinese and Thai restaurants, mains came as they were ready, not all at once.

Ambience:

Standard issue Thai decor - elephants, bright patterns, a paper fan or two. Quite full for a Wednesday night. Lots of middle-aged women meeting up for wine and dinner (in that order), quite a few families as well.

Overall:
Lanna Thai does a really good job of the local take-away Thai-cum-restaurant. It's comfortable and unpretentious. Take-away prices seal the deal for me. My one gripe would be with the slow and patchy service. You wouldn't want to be too hungry (or too pregnant).

The food at Lanna Thai is consistently excellent. Wonderful fresh produce with perfectly produced flavours marking each dish as unique but always complimentary. For entree, the prawn roll defies the regular flattened version with the golden parcels never failing to delight. For mains you can't beat the green curry with any choice of chicken, prawns or lamb. Personally I can't go past the Pad Met Mamaung with prawns which provides a scintillating combination of robust flavours that never grow tired. The Thai staple of Pad Thai never fails to deliver and is a great companion to any dish.

Service:

The service at Lanna Thai is always friendly and efficient even if you order takeaway.

Ambience:

Tucked away in a tight corner the Lanna Thai probably does not benefit from its location but its reputation would surely overcome this. Dining in is quite a casual sort of affair but always pleasant.

Overall:
I love Lanna Thai as a great suburban (yes, even though it is Subiaco) Thai restaurant. It rivals some of the best Thai restaurants in Perth, is modestly priced and consistently good.

There seems to be a lack of good Thai restaurants in Perth, so I was pleased to visit this one on 26JAN08.

The decor and ambience was superb, with good lighting, Thai antiquities and a very clean fish tank.

The service was excellent and the friendly and very patient staff were well-presented in their colorful Thai-inspired uniforms.

As a fan and long-time aficionado of local Thai cuisine, I was not particularly impressed with the food, sadly enough.

I found the main dishes overpriced, small servings and far from what they are supposed to be like in Thailand.

I would not dismiss Lanna Thai as a restaurant, but I do recommend a review of the menu and the recipes and styles used by their current chef.

The best thing about Lanna Thai is the food. Best Pad Thai in Perth. Also on my favourite list is the Duck Curry. They serve better curry than Amarin Thai in Subi.

The ambience could be improved although it’s sufficient for a small neighbourhood restaurant. I would recommend Lanna Thai if you're looking for a small friendly restaurant. Their food is comparable to Dusit Thai in Northbridge. The service is always good too.

I've never actually dined in the restaurant itself, I always get takeaway. If I could, I would eat their Panang Chicken Curry all day every day. Whenever I don't feel like cooking, my first thought is always 'Lanna Thai.' The Panang curry is made from red chillies, ground peanuts, sweet basil, kaffir lime leaves, and coconut milk, and it is magnificent. Actually, I think I might get it for lunch today, writing about it has made me hungry. The only problem I've found is if you're trying to get it delivered, it takes awhile for them to write down the address as most of the staff don't have the best English. It's a little frustrating, but I'm willing to put up with it just to eat their curry. They also make nice spring rolls, really crispy and not oily from the fryer. Its $3.90 for two, and they are quite big.

Went with two friends on a Wednesday night. Fair number of people for mid-week, which always augers well for any restaurant.

I can't remember everything that we had, but the Green Chicken Curry was terrific, as was the coconut rice. We had a beef and ginger stir fry which was nice and sharp with some sour flavours though there wasn't very much beef in the dish. We also had a vegetable dish, though I can't recall its name. It was good though!

Service was average.

First of all I must say that the food was absolutely gorgeous!

We ordered a coconut juice and both for me and my boyfriend, it was the best coconut juice we’ve ever had.

We then had a Massaman beef curry; the beef was of excellent quality, the sauce had a fantastic flavour and the potatoes, which had been previously cooked with the sauce, had really got the sauce into it absorbing a wonderful full taste.

As accompaniment we had a delicious coconut lime rice, which was subtle but yet flavoursome, it was something I had never tried before, but that I will certainly get again.

We then had a delicious pad thai, with nice quality chicken and a portion of fried rice which again, had scrumptious flavour, but of course we weren’t able to finish because we misjudged their portion sizes, which are actually quite big!

The waiters and owner were extremely nice and helpful they accommodated us even on a busy Saturday night and without reservation! The meals arrived very promptly and in the right order.

We will certainly go back, maybe adventuring more into their non-traditional dishes, which captured my eyes.

Went to Lanna Thai on a Thursday night for dinner. It was relatively busy for mid week. Had a wonderful meal, the food is probably the best Thai I've had, the red chicken curry was sensational and everyone was impressed with the quality and taste of the dishes.

The service was good, only thing was that we had to ask for a bottle of water twice. Apart from that the food came out quickly.

Definitely a place to try if you’re a fan of Thai food. The decor is pretty casual, but with an authentic Thai feel with various wood carvings, pots etc.

If you are looking for one of the best Thai dining experiences in Perth then look no further than Lanna.

For value for money (most meals are around $14.50) excellent customer service and quality and authenticity, this place has the lot!!

It's a little hard to find - just look for Nando's and it is out the back of that complex. Park on the side street in behind the restaurant and you will have no problems finding a parking spot.
