Welcome to Little Chutney's

Little Chutney's

The long wait is finally over! Little Chutneys officially opened on Thursday the 7th of June 2007. You are now able to enjoy Little Chutneys fully licensed restaurant for breakfast, coffee, lunch, dinner and functions, seven days a week.

Located next door to Chutney Mary's.

The beautiful and comfortable establishment style decor is gaining lots of comments. Many patrons have expressed how happy they are to see a return to a textured, more luxurious environment. The combination of leather booth seating together with tucked away quiet areas is providing patrons with choices to suit their mood.

The restaurant is perfect for a romantic dinner for two through to a lavish birthday celebration for 100. Little Chutney's well equipped bar allows for a tailor made celebration to suit your needs. The extensive wine list boasts 160 national and international wines and champagnes to choose from as well as a range of beers and innovative cocktails.

If you are looking for somewhere different and exciting for breakfast, then please try our a la carte menu served from 7am to 11.30 am, Saturday and Sunday.

From a Masala Omelette to delicious Indian inspired scrambled eggs folded with paneer cheese and chopped spinach, fresh fruit salad and muesli to piping hot cinnamon pancakes, or even our "Not so little big breakfast!", we know you will find something to put an exotic Indian twist on breakfast in Subiaco. All eggs used are free range, and we use only the freshest fruit in our freshly squeezed juices and blended smoothies.

To compliment our breakfast, or to enjoy any time with a friend, we have chosen the highly acclaimed Toby's Estate Coffee, using Indian Ratnigiri Single Origin beans. There is also a great selection of loose leaf plunger style teas to choose from as well as spicy Chai, perfect for cuddling up in one of our booths on a cold winter day.

Our management and staff look forward to seeing you and your guests at Little Chutneys.

We had the tasting plate for entrees which came out with 2 pieces of each - lamb cutlets, samosas, fish tikka and some bread and accompaniments at $30. Flavours were lovely. We shared a butter chicken ($24) and a pumpkin curry ($15?)for mains, and both were very tasty and quite good serves. Plain basmati rice at $5 per serve is a bit rich. Wines per glass are also expensive at $8 - 9 each and also on the small size. Would see if could BYO next time.

Service:

Service was attentive even though drinks did not arrive til after entrees and we had to ask for water twice. Would appear that there were 3 wait staff looking after our area and each person in turn came up to see if we needed anything - overkill perhaps.

Ambience:

The decor is just lovely and makes a pleasant change from next door. Definitely a more urban, funky feel about it with the large lighting overhead. The booth seating is a lovely touch too.

Overall:
Will definitely go back though - the combination of the mood and the food makes for a lovely night out - but for special occasions as the total bill came out to a lot more than we would usually spend for an Indian meal.

Food:

lunch special menu @29.50 for entree & main course was good value - samosas were crisp and plump with filling, 3 baked chicken varieties looked vastly different but tasted much the same. Mint sauce too much coriander for me (I'm not a great coriander fan...). For mains the Beef saagwaan was good and had a definite chilli bite, but the chicken manchurian seemed like bland chicken mince balls in garlic sauce.

Service:

unobtrusive and efficient. Walked in off the street on a Sunday before a footy game, early enough to easily get a table without waiting or booking. Manager gave us a free beer that he mistakenly opened when he thought we ordered 2 of one type - had to leave a tip for that nice touch

Ambience:

trendy upmarket decor & furniture - comfy cushioned booths with "star trek" see-through seats. Bathroom was exquisite, best looking and cleanly kept bathroom I've seen for some time

Overall:
Recommended for an impromptu feed when not too busy - a little on the pricey side but reasonable value for money. Surprised they did not have any gewurztraminer on wine list, goes well with spicy foods (I think so anyway). More tasting plates with variety of dishes would be good for small table to try. As earlier, chicken manchurian was a little bland, but maybe that's Manchurian style.....?

Having had a stellar run with sister restaurant, Chutney Mary's, I decided it was time to head in to the ultra-chic looking Little Chutney's.

The interior of Little Chutneys is awesome - beautiful decor and a calm flavour. I love the modern feel to the place instantly - very different for an Indian restaurant! Spaceship chandeliers and dark wood booths make it a great place for a drink or meal. ( they recently acquired their tavern license)

My partner and I went in for breakfast - we were keen to see what the Indian cuisine take would be! I ordered eggs Benedict, while my partner had a fry up.

Unfortunately, they need a bit more practice when it comes to breakfast dishes. Only 6 tables were seated, most had their food already, yet it took 45 mins to receive our meals. My eggs, with 'Coriander infused hollandaise' were quite bland and thin on sauce.

The staff kept a brave face, as they had obviously been left alone by some errant staff members and left to fend for themselves. But excuses don't make a good breakfast!

The prices are quite reasonable - $14.50 for the eggs Benedict and $3.50 for a pot of tea for one.

Their heart was in the right place, however, I love a good breakfast and I'm sorry to say, I was sorely disappointed by this outing.

We managed to book a table half an hour before we arrived last night, which was handy, because it was fairly busy.

We started off with a cocktail each - well made and up there with the best caprioska I've ever had.

For entree we decided to share naan and three dips and smoked chicken sausage with peanut sauce. Both were delicious, but we didn't finish the bread and dips because we needed room for mains.

We shared red emperor malabar curry and smoked rack of lamb for mains, with kashmiri naan and cream cheese naan and rice on the side. I couldn't decide on my favourite out of the two dishes. The fish was moist and firm and in a very smooth sauce and the lamb had more of a kick to it.

As usual with Indian food, the servings looked on the small side but were very filling and we didn't manage dessert. We were offered a liqueur (I can't remember the name) that tasted of cinnamon and cloves and this was a nice end to the meal.

The service was attentive throughout the evening although they could possibly benefit by having waiters assigned to their own areas. We were asked about the same thing several times, which didn't bother us at all, but other people may not be happy about it.

I love the decor in this place: the stripey carpet, booths, chandeliers etc. It's dark and comfortable. It's also fairly noisy when it's full, but the good things far outweighed that.

I feel that the prices were fairly accurate for that style of dining. It was more upmarket than Chutney Mary's next door, but I don't think any of the mains were over $30.

Overall, it was a great night out and we will be going there again. The manager told us that they would be open until late on weekends (as a bar), serving drinks and tapas style food after 10.30pm. Maybe we'll try that next time.

My husband and I went to Little Chutney's about a month ago on an afternoon lunch date without a booking we didn't have trouble getting a table even for a Friday.

I'm not usually a curry or spicy type eater - but being pregnant my tastebuds have been doing crazy things so tto satisfy my craving, we had the tandoor taste plate to start and then shared a butter chicken dish with some naan. The food was delicious but the servings were small for the price listed on the menu. The service was lovely on the day and the decor very funk-wah, all the right settings for an intimate luncheon for the two of us.

A friend wanted to try out this newbie so we headed in. Didn't make reservations as it was a Wednesday and were quite surprised to have to wait about 15 minutes while they organised a table (the staff were quite surprised by how busy it was too!) Service was really friendly and pretty fast for how busy the restaurant was, the waitress did bring water straight away (but no glasses) and took our orders promptly.

It's a lovely lush looking restaurant as befits its central subi location, with exquisite lighting and a very attractive bar (I believe that the long term plan is to make it a sort of late night cocktail lounge after the dinner rush). It's not BYO, but the wine list should keep most people happy.

The menu is very extensive and there are heaps of vegetarian and fish offerings which was great. We ordered tandoori baked cauliflower, channa masala (chick peas), prawn pappas and tandoori baked swordfish. It did take fair while for the mains to come out and our entree of garlic naan was a little bland, however it wasn't a problem as the wine (vasse felix dry red i think) was great. When the mains came we had actually forgotten to order rice, but this was rectified within a few minutes. The swordfish was divine - cooked perfectly and with the slightest crust of tandoori spices, not very spicey. The chickpeas were great but this is a fairly standard dish and should be done well. The prawns were not super fresh and were possibly even a tad undercooked, but served in a fantastic sauce. Both my friends enjoyed everything, but I thought the cauliflower tasted a little funny, and I'm sorry I can't describe it any better than that!

Overall, it's a very elegant, sophisticated restaurant and will be a welcome addition for vegetarians and those seeking a few different dishes. That said, I think its probably Indian dressed up a little and then watered down a bit to appeal to a more mainstream (and bigger spending) market. Take a date, not a bunch of mates!
