I work on this street and Mais is a very popular choice with my colleges for a quick and cheap lunch for under $10. I had the vermicelli with shredded pork, which is a nice summery salad with lots of vegetables and crushed peanuts ($6). On a previous visit I had the chicken vermicelli curry (also $6, their lunch menu is extensive) which was mild and filling. My colleges partook in the fried rice noodle, chicken curry, vermicelli curry and the lemon grass beef vermicelli, which all looked nice, I was impressed the rice noodle looked properly wok fried and fresh and not some sauce drenched mess. Do note that the sizes err on the small (read, not typical Australian size), but a serving of spring roll or other entrée ($4) will help fill you nicely up and still end up around the $10 mark. Some of us also partook in the authentic Vietnamese ice coffee ("Is this a Vietnamese ice coffee?" asked one of my colleges, "Because if it is a Brownes Ice Coffee Chill I don't want it,"), which is a lovely strong and sweet coffee with condensed milk ($3). Wish there was not so much ice cube and more coffee though.

The surrounds and ambience are nothing to write about, but it is clean and neat and the owners have made an effort to jazz it up with trendy Japanese paper light pendant, artistically arranged boxed framed photos and other what looked like other tips gleaned off Tara’s DIY segment off Better Homes & Gardens. The service is efficient, accurate and individual payment is allowed. I wouldn't make an effort to come here for dinner, but have no hesitation coming here again for another quick lunch.

went on a saturday night without booking and the only table available was in the "smoking room" but as we were the only ones in it there was not a problem...i had chicken curry and rice and at $7.50 it was excellent value...the wife had 'crispy fish' and fried rice and was only just able to finish the meal as the serving was more than generous..it is a BYO and the coolers actually have ice in them, a pleasant change..the restaurant has improved measurably over the past 12 months and is excellent value for money.. it is well worth a visit..but be sure to book on the weekend

Love this restaurant. Came upon it by accident...trying to shelter from the rain. Very friendly staff and a great choice of Vietnamese food. Tastes exactly as described and always generous servings. Well recommended!!
