Overall:
I was married to a Malay for 20 years, lived in Malaysia for 10 of them, and still cook Malay food myself, so I consider my standards of food authenticity quite high. Please read my review in this light.
Makan means to eat, so Makan2 (is the same as Makan-makan) and this sort of means, to have something to eat.
I went on recommendation of a Singaporean friend who said it was good and I brought 5 friends/neighbours.
As I'd read on this site, service was very ordinary, living down to my expectations, eg we had to ask several times for such basics as water, to wipe the table, and there was a long wait. There was also a sign outside advertising for staff - like so many Perth eateries.
I was quite prepared to overlook this if the food was good. So much Malay food in Australia is made by Chinese Malaysians who do not bring that authentic touch. With this place run by Malay Malaysians I expected very good food. To be fair it wasn't bad. However my order of Nasi Lemak (coconut rice and all the trimmings, except fish for chicken) was good except the rice was plain steamed rice & no apology or comment was made (eg we've run out, would you mind...?
Others in my party with perhaps lower authenticity standards enjoyed their meals, especially the spicy goat soup and the roti chanai with curry. But they too mourned the poor standards.
The ambience is trying to be modern casual and it is close to right, though the decor is a bit tired. The service not good, the food not bad and the price very good.
I found a blog referring to this place as expensive - I reckon this must have been an impoverished and recently arrived Asian student who hankers for home and hawker cooking but with Asian prices :-) To retired people like me and my friends on modest budgets the price was very good.
I'd go again. Hope they find more staff.
