Welcome to Matsuri Japanese Restaurant
The 24th of October in 1990 marked the launch of Matsuri Japanese Takeaway in Hay Street, Perth. A budding Japanese restaurant that would soon become an icon of Perth dining. Several other Matsuri outlets were opened nearby, until the recent relocation to the current premises in the QV1 building.
Yutaka Takeuchi founded Matsuri. His intention was to provide quality Japanese food to Perth's blossoming business centre and to defy the usual outrageous pricing. He now successfully brings amazing Japanese cuisine to the people.
The word Matsuri means Festival and Matsuri Japanese Takeaway certainly celebrates food. Delicious Japanese meals - whether you choose a set menu, or by the plate - are created by Matsuri's dedicated and talented team of chefs. They will arrive at your table pleasing to the eye, and ready to pleasure the tastebuds. With an emphasis on light and healthy foods, you can be sure that you're not only enjoying yourself, you're also looking after your body.
Matsuri was designed by Architect Michael Roxby, and combines contemporary style with an oriental feel. Stainless steel and glass complimented with bamboo, washed river stones, and water features which sooth the ear and mind while you indulge.
In Summary, Matsuri blends fine Japanese cuisine with amazing surroundings for the ideal dining experience, any time of the year.

Overall:
Nice restaurant for a reasonably priced quick meal. My teriyaki was a bit disappointing reminiscent of a tasteless stewing beef, maybe should have gone for sashimi which was delicious, like the accompaniment. The service is quick and efficient great place for a meal after work or a casual group night out.

I’m a bit upset about this, reading your reviews made me think that I had found the eldorado of Japanese food in Perth! But hey as a Japanese food lover and with three years spent in Japan I can be certain that Matsuri is not a 4.5 Japanese restaurant. Maybe I just got the wrong dishes...We had vegetables tempura...and I could have prepared them better at home, gyoza not bad, the sushi was pretty good and then the teriyaki chicken was really awful and the chicken ginger quite average and way too salty.
Overall:
Spent an enjoyable Tuesday evening here with friends, the food is good and fresh. A brave friend tried the eel, declaring it 'interesting' - tastes like fish but still looks alarmingly like snake!
It is all glass and tiles and can get a bit noisy - but if you like 'buzz' or don't particularly want to talk to people at the other end of your table then its fine.
Overall:
Fantastic food. Have eaten there many times and everything I've had is great. The service is generally pretty good and the food comes out really fast even when they're busy. And the serving sizes are generally really big. Only disappointment that they say they won't take large bookings on a Friday night - though they seem to for some people!
Overall:
This time visiting Matsuri wasn’t as good as the first, the food is still excellent and the subtle flavours in the main courses are brilliant for the palate after being woken up by the entrees (the raw beef and the octopus are particularly good), once again the main courses are big enough that you don’t need to have a dessert and something about the little salads that they give you makes you want so much more!!!! What I do find a little annoying on the food side is that the menu is so limited, ginger chicken, beef etc; tempura; teriyaki chicken, beef etc and sushi are basically all that is available and after eating here a few times you have basically tried the whole menu. The service is very polite and efficient but it lacks the personal touch that other restaurants pride themselves on but it looked like they were doing around 400 covers for the night so you can almost forgive the wait staff for trying to do their job quickly.
Once again also the parking is a real hassle, having to park in the multi-storey car parks and walk down is more of an annoyance than anything but it would be nice to be able to arrive and have your car parked right next to the restaurant. The ambience is ok but there isn’t a view as such and with so many people fitting into such a close space you have got to speak up to be heard properly. All in all though still a great restaurant, many others in Perth could take heed to the fact that you don’t have to charge exorbitant prices to have good food, so make sure that you support this restaurant because they are not only in it for the money!!! :p
Overall:
This restaurant is one of the few truly memorable dining experiences that i have had in Perth, the food is great here and the really subtle flavours that permeate through the dishes are in balance, some of the bigger flavours like those on the marinated octopus are fantastic to as they liven up the mouth and leave you wanting more, the only down side that i can see to this restaurant is the fact that there is no parking so you do have to fork out a little extra to park in the multi-storey car parks that are near the restaurant. The service is effiecient if a little impersonal at times but with the quick turnover in the restaurant this can be forgiven. Oh one other thing come to think of it is that the wine list isn't that fantastic, none of the wines have the vintage printed on the menu so you pretty much have to guess when you are ordering. all in all though a great restaurant and certainly it could teach some of the bigger and more famous japanese restaurants a thing or two about flavour balance and subtlety.
Overall:
Have been to Matsuri many times.
The food is consistently good - love the set menus.
Staff are always friendly and welcoming.
The surroundings have a clean, fresh feel but not ideal if you prefer a more cosy environment or for a romantic evening.
Prices are very reasonable for restaurant standards.
Overall:
This has always been one of my favorite restaurants in perth. Its good japanese food at a reasonable price where you get good servings and a good wine list. Service is good too as the food does come out together and quickly enough. Ive had many birthday dinners there and still rate it quite high. The Interior Design is very modern and clean and well lit
Overall:
Visited Matsuri for my 25th birthday and had a fantastic experience. It was my first time at a Japanese Restaurant and I was very impressed. The food was beautiful. Be wary, if you're not overly hungry but want an entree anyway (because you want to try some of everything) I suggest not ordering the chicken salad - its huge! Overall, a wonderful time had by all and I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends.
Overall:
The best Japanese in Perth!!!
The agedashi tofu is soooooo good! The sashimi salmon is yummy and fresh. It's always busy so book!
I think it's fairly traditional because there are always Japanese tourist eating there when a case of home sickness strikes.
It's cheap and then you can use your extra dollars and trot over to Bar One and start the weekend.
