Piccolo in North Perth

by Nat from Nova 93.7

OK, so here was the deal. We had to get five chicks together for dinner sometime before Christmas. Sounds easy? Not when one’s just had a baby, one’s in the midst of moving to Melbourne, one’s doing a fly-in, fly-out job and one’s organizing a wedding. And then there’s me, the poor bugger who has to wrangle them all together. So it was something of a miracle when we all descended on Piccolo in North Perth within forty five minutes or so of the appointed time – not bad by our standards!

Nat from Nova

Piccolo, in that funky little strip on Angove Street, North Perth, was absolutely flat out. Not bad for a Tuesday night, although the fact that it was just a week out from Christmas might have had something to do with it. We scored a table outside – it was probably a good idea to keep us away from the normal customers, given our conversation can tend to be a little, er, salacious (which is a polite way of saying “smutty”!)

Nat from Nova

The chef kicked it off with a tiny taste of divine mushroom soup, and we cracked the first bottle of Moet. Piccolo’s BYO, so I brought along the bottle I was given for doing 1000 shows with Nathan (it was a party after all!). For entrée, Jilly and I opted for the salt, pepper and green tea squid ($19). The serving was especially generous, and the flavour was amazing. It was dressed with a chilli lime dressing and there was just the right amount of chilli (enough to notice, not enough to burn!). The other three chicks went for the sautéed wild mushrooms and potato rosti with poached egg and asparagus ($18) which looked delicious with great flakes of shaved parmesan topping it off, and it got a thorough thumbs up from everyone.

Nat from Nova

For main course Danni couldn’t go past the slow roasted lamb shoulder ($32). It had a greek salad with basil dressing on the side and, by the way Danni polished it off, was obviously pretty tasty. The other three girls had too much trouble deciding between the main course dishes, so went for the main tasting plate ($36) which had generous serves of the mussels with lemongrass, chilli and coconut cream, the pork belly and the braised beef cheek. OK, so they’re girls who love their meat! It took them a while to work their way through it and it must have been good because for a few minutes there, I think there was actually silence.

Nat from Nova

For my main course, I found the duck just too hard to ignore and I was SO happy with my choice. How’s this for a description: ‘five spice’ and maple syrup roasted duck breast with sautéed potatoes, green beans and a roasted hazelnut and spring onion dressing ($36). Absolutely divine. I would have licked the plate clean if I thought I could have got with it.

And whilst we’d eaten pretty heartily up to this point, we still managed to find room for dessert – it was the silly season after all. So the dessert menu was duly delivered and we started drooling all over again. Danni and Sandy shared the chocolate plate for 2 ($28) and they were quite delighted with the selection of chocolatey treats (who wouldn’t be, let’s face it!). There was chocolate fondant, white chocolate egg (served in actual eggshell), mocha icecream, milk chocolate mousse and dark chocolate and mint truffles, all served up on a platter with “Piccolo” spelled out in – what else – chocolate!

Nat from Nova

Jilly and Antonell decided to be a bit more ladylike and share the Bailey’s panna cotta with strawberry and raspberry soup ($12). The flavours were lovely and delicate, but it kind of paled in comparison to the chocolate festival happening on the other side of the table! I decided to turn a blind eye to my sweet tooth and ordered the cheese platter ($15). There was a selection of three cheeses, that the menu told me were Charleston, Ironstone and Tarago Shadows of Blue, served up with lavosh fruit chutney and my favourite, quince jam. It was a delightful way to round out the meal.

At the end of the night, the consensus was that the chef had outdone himself with some outstanding food. If we had to be picky (which isn’t in our natures at all!) the one disappointment was that the service seemed to be spread a bit thin. Our waiter was extremely competent, but she just seemed to be expected to look after too many tables. And although I didn’t require the facilities, a couple of the girls found the trip to the toilet a little on the scary side.

All up though, Piccolo is definitely a great little spot, and we’d all be happy to go back there again. Maybe we’ll be able to get our acts together again by next Christmas!

Piccolo in North Perth is also on the EatingWA VIP Card.

My wife & I with 2 friends went for dinner prices were what you pay at the best restaurants in town so expections were high.
The entree's arrived, mine was the wrong meal I foolishly excepted it rather than making a fuss. Everybody was happy with thier choices.
The mains were a mixed bag the Pastas $24 very fair price and of a good standard, mine was the Peking duck & the Gnochhi was good
The Bombay duck at $37 was uneatable both as it was tough and the distinctive sauce it was served was horrible, I am a huge duck fan and my friend had us all try it & we agreed. My wifes salmon $37 was well overcooked & bland we paid & left

Service:

The waitress was very sweet & she did ask if the food was Ok. But did not question the uneaten food ? but no back up from the kitchen I assume.

Ambience:

Ok, Its a coffee bar & cake shop dressed up as a bistro

Overall:
Great location if they reduced their menu to simple dishes that the chef could cook like their pasta's and priced it as a cafe not a restaurant it would be a busy place.

The original owners have sold this restaurant, now it's ordinary, ordinary, ordinary. Gone are the "Piccolo" days of as we know it, and it has been repalced with a menu of "surf and turf" and "lamb chops with basil pesto". Where have the original owners moved on to?

Service:

More of the same, ordinary, the waitress had trouble speaking english and gave us the breakfast menu at dinner time.

Ambience:

All other other people in the restaurant also seemed to be caught out, gasping at the change in menu.

Overall:
Ordinary, ordinary, ordinary, and still charging $30 for a main meal. Why would you buy a good restaurant with a good reputation like Piccolo, and downgrade the menu to pub-style food....its ruined forever!

My girlfriend and I ordered the chicken breast with creamy sauce & steamed vegies. The men ordered the veal dish with salad and the steak n chips/salad. The chicken dish was horrible sorry to say. It had no taste and was basically a chicken breast with a big pile of gluey sauce on top. The sauce was horrible, I just couldn't finish it, I ate half which is not like me. I looked over at the boys plates and there seemed to be an abundance of leafy greens. My partner later told me his veal lacked flavour and the only sauce he could taste was whatever was used to dress the salad. He was also very disappointed.

Service:

Satisfactory - they don't really have to do a lot as Piccolo is BYO. I only noticed one girl looking after the whole place. At one point we did receive another tables orders.

Ambience:

We sat outside on a warm night which is always pleasant.

Overall:
Not sure what has happened to this restaurant, but our experience at Piccolo was a dramatically different one from about a year ago. The style of food on offer was completely different and really simple, almost pub food. I was horrified to see things like Chicken Parmigiana and Steak & Chips on the menu. Gone are the modern, creative dishes they used to serve which were stunning and so rich in flavour. Very, very disappointing, we won't be back and that's a shame because it's a local.

Top quality nosh from this quirky little cafe. Kicking off with an antipasto plate, with just the right balance between hot and cold items - the 2 styles of grilled chorizo were fabulous, although I wasn't too impressed with the store bought crackers, smoked salmon and creme fraiche combo?

My partner and I have a rule of not ordering the same meal to allow for maximum tasting, but neither of us could go past the sticky 1/2 duck with rice and asian greens - and neither were disappointed. Crunchy on the outside, tender in the middle. A little akward to manage with the bones, but worth the effort.

Merlot poached pear with mascarpone was a great finish, not too sweet, perfect with coffee.

Service:

Service was fabulous. Smart, warm efficient, these ladies know what they are doing. Even after a mix-up with the VIP discount card - they were smooth and accommodating.

Ambience:

A little cool on a cold Perth night, the hard surfaces make it a little noisy, especially when there is a table of hyenas behind you! Love the white table cloths for a BYO.

Overall:
Great little hidden gem - I hope it stays that way with only 40 spots! BYO is a treat, but its a struggle to pay $37 for a main - and pour your own wine?

Well, here is a big disappointment. There was 10 of us there, and out of the 6 different dishes we tried, only the pork belly and the steak got acceptable marks. The Moroccan chicken dish had absolutely no flavour. With a plate of mussles you get the tiniest piece of bread (you ask for more and they'd run out! on a tuesday night!!). The chicken pasta (it's got some fancy name, but that's essentially what it is) is so bad, both people left it uneaten. And so on...

Service:

The service was very poor. This young girl looked scared and confused. It took almost 40 minutes for the entree to get to our table (and it was only 1 tasting plate!). For the food we probably waited closer to an hour.

Ambience:

There's shabby sheek, there's rustic, and this is neither. It's small, cramped and cheap. The chairs are terribly uncomfortable. It's one of those restaurants that thinks if they put a white paper on the tables and have got square plates, they should be charging premium prices for the food!

Overall:
No thank you, that's what I think. If I'm going to pay an average of $35 per main meal, I'll look around a bit better. Terribly disappointing.

I had read so many great reviews for Piccolo and my expectation was high. But like so many fantasies, the reality fell short. Not that the food was in any way 'bad', it just wasn't - on the night we visited anyway - 'great'. 5 or 6 entrees and same number of mains on offer. We shared the tasting plate - two types of cheese, marinated olives, chorizo, rocket, prawns and a delish pate and quince paste (alas nothing to spread these latter delights on - almost had to lick them off the knife!). This was the highlight of our meal and a bargain at $25. The mains didn't quite live up to the opening number - unfortunately the mussels were sold out so we settled for a homey vegetarian lasagne (so-so) and sticky duck & rice (nice but pricey at $37).

Service:

Service was extremely prompt and professional. We had booked a month earlier (the place is TINY so only holds around 40 people, I'm guessing, so does get booked out) and we were telephoned by a staff member on the day to confirm.

Ambience:

Was it just me, or have others felt they are dining in a laboratory here? Maybe its the whole tiny corner store thing. No, actually it was the bright white walls and too too bright lighting. Like a white washout. I was blinded.

Overall:
Piccolo was, in a word, 'ok'. I was expecting so much more. Maybe it's 'not you, it's me'. Our entree and two mains came to $90 - I can think of a number of other restaurants I'd prefer to offload my cash to. Glad I went, but now that I have 'been there, done that', I probably won't 'do it again'.

Booked in for 7:30 Wednesday night after reading the reviews looking for a small funky place to dine.

We were greeted by a lovely waitperson that got us seated slightly apart from the other diners, giving us a sense of privacy but yet still being included.

After being told what was on the taste plates and specials of the day, we decided to share a taste plate for entree. This arrived with a cold crab salad, chamomile smoked duck and a salmon roll type thing. The crab was my favorite, the duck tasty the salmon maybe a little bland and appreciated the cracked black pepper.

For mains I went for the chilli coconut mussels in main size with some of their homemade bread on the side, they were very flavoursome and the bread helped to soak up some of the leftover sauce. My partner got the head to tail which consisted of beef done three ways, beef cheeks, rib eye and ox-tail wonton. He advised the beef cheek was the winner.

After this we decided to finish off with dessert, I went for the chocolate fondant with Scottish tablet ice-cream(like crumbly fudge mixed through ice-cream - yum) this was simply devine and probably the standout of the meal for me. My partner got the trio of ice-cream, Scottish tablet, thyme and chocolate swirl. The thyme was unusual and refreshing.

All in all it was a wonderful meal, very flavoursome and after 3 courses filling. I guess my only irk is the need to order vegetables separately; I am a bit over paying $30 for meat alone.

Our bill came to $113 with a lemon, lime and bitters.

Service was great, very knowledgable and friendly. Restaurant is quite sparse and when it filled up quite loud but not deafening.

Would I go back - sure.

A small group of us enjoyed an excellent night at Piccolos. The food was very good, obviously made by a chef that cares about his craft. The service was great and I particularly enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. If Piccolos maintain this standard they will surely be looking for larger premises in the future!

Having eaten at the Piccolo on a few occasions now and I always face the same single problem - what do I choose! Thank goodness for the tasting plates and recommendations from the staff. The food is without a doubt delicious and the chocolate pudding out of this world!- hats off to the chef

Coming from overseas I found the pricing to be a pleasant surprise, not often good food comes at a reasonable price.

I found Piccolo by accident. It is one of those little gems that makes it worthwhile to have to go through all that misery and blandness that I normally get eating out at so many run-of-the-mill restaurants.

I perhaps should not write a review of the Piccolo because, once discovered (and I am very occasionally successful at discovering such restaurants), restaurants such as the Piccolo are best kept secret. But, what the heck ...

To be honest, I think the only restaurant I have eaten at that rates as highly as the Piccolo is a small eatery called the Magpie Cafe in Whitby on Yorkshire's East Coast. This is in the heart of Captain Cook territory and is a mighty long way away from my more familiar stomping ground around Perth's eating establishments.

Congratulations to the chef and everyone at the Piccolo.

A wonderfully friendly dining experience with exciting food choices and the option to dine inside or alfresco.

The menu suited my partner as her healthy lifestyle was well catered for.

Overall It shows us that we can experience fine dining and a pleasant ambiance in the close suburbs of Perth.

Well done Piccolo.

A night out with friends to celebrate my birthday was made even better by visiting Piccolo's which had received a good review in STM.

Parking was very convenient and abundant. Our table was outside which would be terrific on a pleasant evening however it was breezy and raining so rug up if you know you are outdoors (the heater helped).

The food was excellent - the salt & pepper squid was the BEST ever tasted - the eggplant with a chocolate sauce was unusual but needed to be tried and was worth it. The delicious duck salad was a generous entree. The entrees were so impressive that they may have left the mains wanting somewhat however we were all happy with our choices.

What made this BYO restaurant stand out was the service! The staff were great and were very accommodating. This place is worth a try but you need to book.

PS: The toilet is a bit scary though!

The food is fantastic. Very hard to decide what to have which definately means that we will keep going back for more.

The salt and pepper squid is amazing, the gnocchi is divine (baked semolina) and the dessert taste plate is to die for - creme brulee is the best.

Service:

The staff are friendly and the restaurant is cute but it is the food is what you would go for.

The price is very reasonable especially for the quality of the food which you recieve. The chef must have a passion for food as he always has something new on the specials board and we have never been disappointed.

If you love food and want somewhere that you know you wont be let down, Piccolo is a must.

This place really is a little ripper. The waitresses are casual but super friendly and efficient. The food is top notch and you can choose to eat inside or out near the verge - which surprisingly adds to the Mediterranean feel.

You are given a sample of their 'soup-of-the-day' whilst you browse the menu. As well as the Italian basics (pasta, pizza etc) this place offers some real variety and food less seen in other Italian restaurants - I tried the duck salad and by God it was good.

It's small and kind of rustic but in a pretty chic kinda way. You could easily bring a girl here and expect to take her home for dessert.
