Welcome to Queens Tavern
Pub Dining Restaurant in Highgate WA
(10 reviews)
Went for dinner on Saturday 9th August 08 pre 8pm - food was good - better than the average pub grub. I had the barramundi and chips - batter was a bit thick but otherwise it was well cooked and chips were great. Partner had gnocci - homemade and very good - smaller serve but he had his minus pancetta (vegetarian). Other guests with me had the fennel pork and the dukkah chicken and both spoke highly of their meals - as professional cooks they know their food.
Started shaky when they couldn't find the booking sheet but improved in leaps and bounds after that - had two very attentive waiters that were knowledgeable about the portions and were very friendly. Booking manager (Irish lass) was nice and efficient.
We sat outside on the courtyard as the restaurant was fully booked. Was great to watch people and just chat - loud table of giggling girls and the smoking was the only put off
Overall:
Overall this was a very pleasant evening - I recommend for a casual night out - wear a jacket if outside as its cold in winter.
Typical pub fare menu - very limited options for vegetarians. I had the fish n chips which looked and tasted like the frozen crumbed oven fry fish you buy in the supermarket freezer section. Chips were just ok, and were served in a cardboard box (!) The tiny salad on the side wasn't very fresh and had no dressing. My partner had the chicken burger, which was very small and the chicken was stringy. At $20 for each of these we were not impressed! It also took over half an hour and it wasn't busy.
There was no service - we had to go to the bar and ask for menus and order, despite the fact that other tables were getting table service. That said, any contact we had with staff was pleasant.
Great - the outside area is lovely with trees and decking. The inside is cool - they have left some cracked bits of plaster on the walls for a rustic look. Was a tiny bit cold though.
Overall:
I would go back for a drink or two but would never eat here again. Very pricey for what you get and none of the food is fresh.
The food here was average for the price they charge. I ordered the risotto with prawns and the prawns looked and tasted like they had been sitting in the freezer for a couple of months. The menu said "tiger prawns" but they looked more like cocktail prawns and for $26, I think it was way overpriced.
Atrocious. We waited half an hour to get one glass of wine. On no less than three occasions, we had to remind the waitress what we ordered because she was clearly intoxicated. The customers on the table next to us said she had been having shots with some guys that kept buying them for her.
The Queens has always had good ambience due to the location etc.
Overall:
Upon complaining to the manager (Amy) about the service, we were met with a sour attitude and accused of lying to her about one of her staff being drunk while on duty. The manager was rude and completely unaccommodating. Not to mention that when we finally got the wine we ordered, it came out corked so we had to send it back and wait even longer. She was completely unapologetic and refused to take the glass of wine off the total bill. We will never return to the Queens again.
Overall:
I went to the Queens with a colleague for lunch on a busy day. The food was satisfying, although quite pricey for a counter meal. The service left a lot to be desired for as we had to wait 10 minutes at the counter to pay for our meals. Overall, the meal was okay but I don't think I would return in a hurry.
Overall:
We had 20 people outside for a birthday dinner and the wait staff were very helpful and gave us different options for paying and ordering with such a large group. The food came out relatively quickly and was absolutely magnificent. Many people at the dinner commented that night on the great venue, service and food. Well done! We will be back for dinner again for sure.
Overall:
The Queens is a favorite for catching up with friends for a few beers.
On Sunday I visited with a group and decided on the salt and pepper squid, I had to actually ask to have pepper put on it as I could not taste any at all. Others ordered the Salmon risotto (tasted bland), the burgers and the potato skins. No one was overly enthusiastic and a lot of food was left on plates.
Although that said, the waitress we had was really friendly and professional. And as previously stated by other patrons the beer and atmosphere is great.
I think in future, I will nip across the road to Mykonos and grab a chicken breast kebab that's half the price.
Overall:
We went for a "Mum's night out" last week and headed to the Queen's as it is lively and has a great atmosphere.
We booked to eat there as well as it always seems to have lots of people eating so we assumed the food would be good.
When we ordered we were told that 3 of the items on the menu were not available, which limited the selection, especially for the vegetarians in the group. We had a long wait for food too that didn't arrive at the same time and mine was dropped on the floor so I had an additional 15 minutes wait.
I had the Salmon risotto which was very average. The tomato in it was still very raw and there was little in the way of salmon. Those that had burgers were really disappointed. The gnocchi did look good though.
Overall, the atmosphere is great but the food was pricey for what is pretty much an average meal.
Overall:
The Queens is a pub that does meals. The food is quite good, but they really do overcharge. Their prices are almost fine dining prices for what is essentially above average pub food.
But they can get away with it because it's such a popular pub in a great location.
I had the lamb with haloomi cheese and tzatziki, which was great, partner had the Cajun chicken salad which was very disappointing, a bit amateurish in my opinion. Love the Matilda Bay beers on tap though (even if they are too a tad pricy).
Overall:
I am becoming a regular at the Queens, usually only for after work drinks and a few wedges. However, a few weekends ago I was stuck for a place to be on a Sunday afternoon and ended up at the Queens.
As we arrived early we got a great table by the open fire and enjoyed a few drinks followed by a very tasty meal. My other half had the obligatory steak sandwich, which arrived with generous amounts of salad and a huge side of fries. I didn't hear one complaint and there was an empty plate - a sure sign that the steak had been good because as a farmer he usually has some complaint to make about the quality of restaurant meat. I ordered the burger, which was very, very tasty.
The wait staff were friendly and attentive and seemed very happy for us to take our time with our drinks long after the meal was done even though others were clearly coveting our table.
It was a very pleasant evening and I will certainly be going back for more. Next time i will be more adventurous in my food choices too, as there were a few tempting options on the menu.
Overall:
Their half hearted attempt at renovating the outside area was limited to a raised deck which has added nothing in my view, except to disrupt the flow.
We were regular diners at the Queens (at least once a week) despite their ridiculously exorbitant and unjustified prices. Food is always good although their menu can remain stagnant for months on end. (They do a fabulous Thai flavoured chicken salad).
Sadly, our last experience (and the reason we won't return) is due to an appalling waiter who was surly and rude and dismissive when I complained that our fish and chips were cold (in fact they felt like they'd been long forgotten in the kitchen). He didn't offer to take them back to the kitchen which was terribly rude. We left after paying the insulting bill and without eating. I just wanted to get out of there rather than make a scene. I later wrote a letter to the Queens and did not receive a response. Appalling way to end what was a beautiful relationship with one of our favourite venues.
