Food:

went with a group of six for dinner Saturday night...shared 6 or 7 plates so had a bit of everything....the quality of the food was fine, mild curry really did mean mild and I hardly new it was even curry...no complaints about the food other than the servings could hardly be called 'generous'....overall, it wasn't what I would describe as value for money....

Service:

for a busy Saturday night I would say they were a tad understaffed but the service was satisfactory other than it took 3 different waiters around 15 minutes to remove the main meal plates etc after eveyone had finished...it was like shift workers coming on and off..

Ambience:

to my idea it completely lacked any ambience or atmosphere...the noise level was higher than any other restaurant I've ever been to and the polished concrete floors certainly didn't help...it was virtually impossible to talk to even the person you were sitting next to let alone anyone else...

Overall:
the food was ok but it's not the sort of place to go to if you want a pleasant night out with good food and conversation...far from good value for money...would I recommend it to a friend? No... will I go again? No

Food:

tasting plate was good, especially as they'll do it so that each person gets one of each sample on the plate. the chicken curry was disappointing, the run of the mill type curry that I could cook at home. we tried the duck dish with a dark soy sauce - the very few duck pieces we got were dry and tough, which was disappointing, although the sauce had lots of flavour.

Service:

was OK, we got there around 6.30pm on a weeknight, and didn't realise that RIA now take bookings. The guy seemed annoyed and looked at us like we should have known, and mumbled something like "we've been taking bookings since...", which we found a bit strange

Ambience:

modern and funky

Overall:
overrated Malaysian food, and pricey for what you get. but there are not many upmarket Malaysian restaurants around, so we feel that it why it is so popular, and we will probably return with friends who regularly go there

My friends and I were surprised to hear no vegetables were included with the fish main meals. You had to purchase vegetables on the side at a cost of over $10. But once we got over that shock and tasted our meals we forgot all about it as the food was delicious! Everyone enjoyed their meals. I ordered vegetables and tofu with yellow rice to share. Could have been a bit more tofu but it was enjoyable. We shared and entree of mushroom balls which were very tasty.

Service:

Our waitress was sweet, especially when we asked her what other diners had ordered as we liked the look of the food on their plate. However after 2 hours another staff member asked us if we could vacate as he was turning diners away. Well they should book as we did!

Ambience:

It was noisy and cold on a wet and windy Friday night but it didn't affect our experience in a negative way.

Overall:
I would definitely like to return for the food and try some of the other dishes. They do take away too so that is a bonus as unfortunately they are no longer byo

Well for starters to share, the wonton is just the usual non-restaurant/food-court type of overly fried minced pork, beef skewers weren't that bad if dipped in sauce and what is that awful potato triangle-like fritters or tempura gone wrong??!!

I thought I'll wait for the mains, came the chili beef which is soggy and taste just like any honey chicken, then came the infamous Nonya Chicken curry, oh my, I was taken aback on how it tasted like something out of a jar I used to have the misfortune to eat. I was horrified but willing to try the Borneo fish which was recommended. It was ok, dry but tasteless and I dutifully waited for my fav kangkong sambal which turned out to be the worse of them. It was disgusting, dumped with lots of sugar

Service:

As expected, it was like most of what the reviewers had said, it was totally disorganised and no one knows what they are doing and looked so confused with wrong orders here and there and no real communications skills from the waitresses/waiters. It was difficult trying to get eye contact from them

Ambience:

I actually liked the ambience, very modern although it was so hot I was perspiring before the food even came out. My long hair was stucked to my back and the flies were flying around so spent my time trying to swat away at the flies

Overall:
I can't express how I feel about the experience I've had last night. I was so excited to finally have found somewhere I read about that has got great reviews and it's all authentic cuisine but how wrong was I. I wanted this to be a real great Chinese New Year celebration since I haven't found any great authentic cuisine since I moved to Perth from Singapore/London 2 years ago. I realised in the end why I am the only Chinese there, the food just isn't authentic, misleading and I was disappointed

Great authentic food, very tasty with just the right amount of spice and heat.

Service was good, wait staff not overly attentive but always seemed to be there when you needed them. Did have to ask again and again for water but overall good.

Ambience:

Great little place, liked the decor.

Overall:
Will be back as the prices are reasonable and the food fabulous in welcoming surrounds.

The food here is consistently good. Their secret is that they manage to get the most amazing flavours into their curries without relying solely on chillis. For starters you can't go past the stuffed mushrooms with coriander dipping sauce and the specials of the night are always worth a look. As well as a good selection of wines they offer alcoholic ginger beer on tap which washes down the spicy food perfectly.

Service:

Unfortunately you can't book but overall the service here is pretty good. I eat here regularly and I've never had any complaints.

Ambience:

This restaurant has a real 'New York City' buzz about it. The polished cement floors and furniture give it quite a funky feel.

Overall:
This place is FANTASTIC!! The food is always good and a real change from the usual fare dished up at other Asian Restaurants. The curries are really complex in their flavours and are only enhanced by the alcoholic ginger beer on tap! There is always a great buzz about this place, it has that x-factor that other restaurants try unsuccessfully to obtain. If you come here you are assured of a good night out.

I wish I could say stay away, but only to keep this gem from becoming more crowded than it already is.

The food is fantastic and very different from the run of the dreary mill Perth standard. Every dish is unique, original and full of spice that works equally well on a hot summers night and in winter.

I think we can forgive the casual service as it is friendly and not all that different from most places.

The ambience is modern, loud, New York kind of style with personality.

Prices are more than reasonable and wine mark ups way lower than the norm.

I went here a couple of months ago, and I definitely will be trying the food again sometime soon. My overall rating of the restaurant would be better, had it not been for the lack of ambience (another reviewer described it as cold and I would agree with this) and poor service (we too were not offered any dessert until we specifically asked two different waiters). We went as a table for four on a busy Thurs night, and the place was packed - always a good sign.

We ate the Borneo fish (unusual and ever so tasty, yet still light), 2 chicken dishes which I cannot remember the name of and a sizzling chilli beef number. I have never had better chilli fried beef! I still dream about the dish!

All in all I would def recommend the restaurant - but you HAVE to book! One suggestion tho is to separate the take away collection point from the main dining area as it was distracting having people walk past us every few minutes with their order...it just kind of ruined the atmosphere a bit. Saying that I would most likely go back to the restaurant as a take away as eating in does not add to the experience at all.

The partner and I visited Ria on Friday night for the first time in a fair while which reminded of a minor annoyance of the restaurant “no bookings” and a new one which I wish they had told me about before we turned up with a bottle of wine as per usual, no BYO on Friday to Sunday nights anymore.

We were met at the door at 9pm and fortunately there was a free table, though we were left standing at the door and then asked by 2 different waitstaff whether we were ok. The table was cleared and we were eventually shown through and brought water, but not menus. After around 5 minutes we were about to leave when the owner/maîtreD noticed we had been forgotten and delivered the menus and apologies. He returned soon after to take our orders and the experience improved from this point on.

While we waited for the starter tasting plate special we took in the atmosphere which is dominated by the cutting edge fit out, hard surfaces and noise. Last time we were here we didn’t really notice the noise as we were in a noisy group of our own but with only the 2 of us we struggled to hear each other speak across the table. But this is also partly because the table is commendably generous for a small venue which is good if you are sharing a few meals around.

The starters came out after a short wait and consisted of satay chicken sticks, dahl fritters and fried mushroom/fish concotions. They were all very high standard and reminded us why we keep coming back. When the starters were finished the waiter asked if we would like our mains now, which is unusual and commendable.

We had around a 5 to 10 minute polite wait and the mains of the special chicken curry and Malay baked fish with rice were delivered with a side of snowpeas. Again the standard of the food was excellent; the chicken curry which tasted somewhere between a red Thai curry and Indian butter chicken was a generous sized serving with many large pieces of well cooked and tender quality pieces of chicken in a very flavoursome spicy but not overly hot sauce. Magnificent. The fish was a good sized piece of quality fish presented on a banana leaf cooked in a spicy star anise/cinnamon sauce and was also one of the best meals we have had for a while. The snowpeas were also very good, fresh and cooked well and the rice was as it should be.

After we had finished our mains there was definitely no room for desserts so we ordered coffees after attracting the attention of the waitstaff. This also matched the standard of the meal and was very good. All up for the starter plate, 2 mains, rice, side, coffee, 1 pint of beer and a bottle of wine was $108 which considering the quality of the food was excellent value for money. It is noisy (bring a group and make some of your own) and you can’t guarantee a table but if you enjoy innovative and well-prepared Asian cuisine then Ria has much to recommend it, we’ll return for sure.

Definitely visiting Ria again - it's so hard to choose from the different dishes on the menu - and the food going to everyone else's tables looked wonderful (as was ours).

We had beef skewers to start - divine satay sauce, and then a chicken curry special and a lamb curry for mains. Both superb with beautiful flavours from the spices and tender meats. Would have loved dessert but no room for that at all.

Only thing I didn't like was their roti bread, maybe it was traditional Malaysian, but it was quite doughy and not similar to others I've had.

Service was very good, even though they were busy and turned half the tables over in the hour or so we were there - not bad for a Tuesday night!

I'm not big on writing reviews but in my mind Ria certainly deserves a write up.

The venue itself is comfortable, sophisticated and cleverly lit making the space versatile....it would equally suit a party of 8 - 10 or a couple wanting an intimate meal.

The menu is truly exciting (not something that can be said for the majority of Perth restaurants that have a tendency to camouflage a pub meal with some mixed lettuce and append a posh surcharge on the tab)and I found myself struggling to decide which of the delicious sounding dishes I wanted to try first.

I was delighted to discover that the excitement didn't stop with the menu. The food is sublime. The flavours are clean yet complex a beautiful fusion of Malaysian, Indian, Chinese and Portuguese cleverly pulled together to tantalise the tastebuds. If you have room after wading your way through the mains I urge you to try the sago dessert. The slippery sago, sticky palm sugar & silky coconut milk make a heavenly combination

Waiters are happy to make recommendations be it food or wine. Try the reasonably priced Bress pinot cold if it's a hot day, the staff will happily chill it for you. The service is generally excellent although some nights/times are better than others depending on how full the restaurant gets

Ria gets 5 stars from me. Go try it!!
