Shilla Korean BBQ Restaurant
Shilla is situated in the magnificent inlet of Claisebrook Cove in East Perth. The restaurant overlooks the scenery of a water inlet reflected on by articulate East Perth houses.
Shilla is not just another place to dine, but a place of experience which each person takes along with them.
We have free and secure parking just for our customers (20 car bays). It is hard to find parking around the area, so park inside the building. Just buzz us and we will let you in.
Shilla has just been nominated as a finalist in the prestigious Catering Institute (WA) Gold Plate Awards for 2008 putting Shilla along side with such big names as Tsunami and Yu.

only friday for lunch

- Food is really high quality here. I prefer snacking on the entree/tapas style food on the menu as opposed to the do-it-yourself bbq or hotpot style. But that can be fun over a few fines ales also. Or if you don't trust yourself to cook the wagyu properly, they will do it for you which I would recommend at least once, just so you know how it should be done.

- I don't understand why Shilla isn't packed every night. Food is great, service is great, location is great. Maybe it's the prices but it's in East Perth, surely people can afford to eat out? Perhaps their mortgages are too high? I dunno but I'll be back again and again.

- For entree, we had 2 dishes - 4 gyoza style dumplings and a chicken dish with sweet sauce. Both were delicious and beautifully presented on the plate. For mains, I had the seafood BBQ and my partner had the waygu beef BBQ. The seafood serving was generous, with 3 huge prawns, 2 scallops and some marinated squid. We both expected the beef to be thinly sliced, but it came out very thickly sliced, and not marinated, but served with a salt/pepper spice powder on the side, for you to dip your meat into. It tasted quite salty. Both mains came with a few raw vegetables on the side that we also cooked on the hotplate. You get a nice assortment of pickles, sauces and unlimited rice, which is a great idea.

- We would go back again, great for something different for a change, and we would order some sort of marinated meat next time, which appear to come thinly sliced.

Table of 4, we got the meat banquet with three courses - an entree, main bbq plate and dessert. Entree consisted of a gyoza, 3 little pork nuggets in a clear mystery delicious gelatinous sauce, and a gourmet-sized serve of mixed slices salad (fruity & slightly savoury) with what tasted like a horseradish & applesauce dressing. I don't know exactly eh, but it was all tasty. Lovely presentation.
Mains were marinated beef, pork and chicken. Marinade on the sweet side, but not too strong in flavour. Dessert was a scoop of vanilla icecream with chocolate sauce drizzle, a sliver of orange, sliver of kiwifruit, and half a "Korean biscuit" - think Chocopie, but nicer.
3.5-star for now, but I do intend to give this another taste. - Service

-
After deciding to go out for dinner as our Au Pair was leaving, and our friends fiancé was arriving from overseas we thought it would be nice to go out with 6 people plus my 2.5yr old son. We decided on Shilla as I had heard good things from this website, and my Au Pair is from Korean so nice change.
We arrived late, which wasn’t a problem, and with having private undercover parking for the restaurant was really nice.
The toilets were really nice and clean.
We placed our order for food, and even though we told them to bring out the entrees before the mains there was a major mix up.
The entrees arrived as well as a main meal which got confused as we had no idea what was going one, and then the side dishes arrived, and then a couple of mains and then after about 10 mins another main, and then another main was very annoying as some people had finished eating, while others hadn’t even received their food yet. Also with the confusion with the entrees/mains, my husband’s main was eaten by someone else who thought it was their entrée, and he then had to wait until well after everyone had eaten to get his food.
Even though it was a quite night, only 3 other tables occupied it was rather crazy.
That said the food was amazing though…

My lady friend and I arrived at 7pm and we were given the choice of any table. We were the first diners and we chose the table (with BBQ facility) at the very front of the restaurant (with the bi-fold front doors open) with superb view of the inlet.
As they were only 2 of us we opted for the banquet to give us more variety. The banquet we selected consisted of 3 entrees, 4 BBQ mains (with condiments) and coffee or dessert. We opted for the dessert which was a full serve of ice cream with topping, half a choc biscuit and small pieces of fruit. The mains that I enjoyed most were meats that were marinated with their special sauce or chilli sauce.
My only grievance was the tobacco smoke from the alfresco area.
Corkage was $9. After exercising the Entertainment Card the cost was approx $62, which was good value. Later on in the evening I was unusually very thirsty and can only suspect significant MSG.

I've been here a few times now including a few takeaways and always enjoy it.
I love going with a table of 4 or 6 and ordering the BBQ main meals as it creates a great atmosphere at the table and makes for a really fun evening.
Each time the food has been delicious and I am always surprised at the amazing flavours of each dish.
The only thing which has reduced my overall rating was the service. Although the staff are always friendly each time I've been there seems to have been some mistake or hold up with the order or the service which mars the evening a little.... In saying that it won't stop me from going back again though.

-
Shilla Korean BBQ is a little tucked out of the way a little distance from the other restaurants at Claisebrook, but well worth discovering.
Being a cold winters night the main doors were closed to the weather (and unfortunately the view!) but enough of the sweet smokey smell was drifting out to get my tastebuds tingling before even entering the restaurant. The decor is beautiful, soft lighting, just enough 'cultural artifacts’ and paintings to let you know it's Korean without any kitsch, elegant furnishings and well laid tables with metal chopsticks and linen napkins.
It did take a little while for our wine to get opened, but otherwise the service was prompt and friendly and stupid questions were answered with a smile.
We all ordered entrees (there are a lot to pick from) and they were bought out one at a time for all to share. They were uniformly good, even sensational. All light tastes, beautifully seasoned, unusual ingredients, absolutely perfect to get you eager for the main meals. We had dumplings (deep fried for a crispy but not greasy pastry, yummy meat filling), pumpkin pancake (fluffy texture, slightly sweet), a crabmeat, raw apple or pear (sorry my memory is flawed) and horseradish sauce dish that was a fantastic mix of crisp and soft textures, and sweet with tangy tastes. Then a raw pork dish again with pear. I'm not normally a raw meat person but this was exquisitely prepared and pleasantly surprised me - super tender, just a little sweet and sharp, again perfect for surprising and pleasing the palate. The last entree was a fried pork and tofu dish which was also great but seemed a little mundane in comparison the really surprising tastes we'd just experienced.
For mains you need to choose between BBQ dishes (which you cook at your table) and hotpot dishes which come in sizzling stone vessels. We mainly had BBQ. Predictably this part of the menu is a little meat heavy. We ordered a selection of chicken, lamb, squid and beef all of which were pre-marinated in lovely sticky, chilli sauce. The accompaniments of miso soup, chilli pickled cabbage, rice and vegetables round out the meal nicely.
All up, it's a great place to go especially in a group. Its fun, it's different. The entrees were a stand out and will thrill those who want to experiment a little, while the BBQ dishes are likely to please anyone.
Value for money was also great, even better if you use the gold card (I think it was just over $30 each for a whole lot of excellent food.) Can't wait to go back on a balmy summer night when the doors are open to the Claisebrook inlet.

What can I say - everything was brilliant.
Great location over-looking the water - the food was beautiful both in taste and in presentation and the service was exceptional.
I would definitely rate this as one of the best places I have been to.

Great Korean Style BBQ. All the traditional seafood, chicken and beef dishes with delicious accompaniments very nicely presented. Service was attentive and courteous. Up-market style decor gives this restaurant an element of class above the other Korean BBQ's I’ve been to in Perth.
The only slightly low point of the evening was we both came out smelling very much like a BBQ (which is partially to be expected at a BBQ restaurant). Perhaps this was because the doors on the restaurant were closed (as it was a bit cold outside). The air con seems to have a difficult time in removing the BBQ smoke, and as a result the air was quite hazy/smokey towards the end of our meal (when the restaurant was full). On the occasions when the door was open the air was a lot clearer.

-
I have eaten at Shilla's on 4 or 5 different occasions now, and always come away more than pleased. Shilla has fast become my favourite restaurant. I have introduced a few friends to this hidden secret, and it has become their favourite too.
Shilla overlooks the Claisebrook inlet, in the heart of East Perth, and with the bi-fold front doors open in summer, I could not imagine a better view, with the well lit multi million dollar properties reflecting off the water in the inlet.
Shilla provides a dining experience that I have not experienced anywhere else. Whilst there are meals on the menu that come fully prepared, we usually opt for one of the bbq banquets. The staff will meticulously lay out your prepared meats, seafood, vegetables and condoments, in a way that makes you feel like you're the only customer in the restaurant. Barbucue'ing your own meal, on a flawlessly maintained bbq, built into the centre of the table, adds another dimension to the whole dining experience, especially when shared with a small group of friends. The food is sensational. The service is the best I have received anywhere. In fact, I can not praise the staff enough for making the whole Shilla experience one that you will want to come back to again and again.
