Overall:
We ventured upon Siena's Leederville for a celebratory dinner one night and requested a table overlooking the indoor playground as we had two children with us (aged 7 and 2).
The indoor playground is segregated from the main dining area by an acoustically modified glass window. This is such a fabulous idea! The kids had a ball in the playground and we had a relaxing time at the table (i.e., no tantrum throwing, bored children to try and keep entertained).
Upon arrival, we were shown to our table. If I were to visit again, I would request a table closer to the doorway of the playground area for although we could see our kids through the glass window, the little one (aged 2) ran out of the area a couple of times and it was difficult to quickly maneuver through the other diners to get to him.
I found the tables and chairs a little squeezy, I like a bit more room to move when I'm dining. But, this is a popular place, especially on specials nights when you can get most meals for about $10.
Once all of our party were seated, it took about 15 mins for a waitress to finally arrive at our table. There were large numbers of young wait staff wandering around aimlessly, but once we called someone over they were quite attentive and friendly.
To start we shared plates of bruschetta, baskets of Italian bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil and antipasto plates with generous servings of marinated olives, cheese, pickled vegetables, deli meats etc. All the starters were fresh, tasty and satisfying!
For mains I had chilli mussels for $10.50, a satisfactory portion of mussels, a little weak on the chilli and the sauce was quite watery. The mussels were small to average in size, but fresh. On the topic of specials prices, just be prepared that you have topay for ANYTHING extra. For example, the mussels didn't come with bread, I had to purchase a side order of bread. There's no free water, but the 1.5L Mount Franklin bottles of water are reasonably priced at only $1.50 each.
Other members of our party had lasagne and other pasta dishes. My Mum ordered a pasta dish called Rigatoni Messinese - Leg ham, grilled eggplant and basil in a tomato sauce topped with mozzarella cheese ($10.50 on special nights). I noticed she wasn't enjoying it, but my Mum is not the kind of person to mention anything. I swapped my mussels with her pasta dish halfway through the meal and she enjoyed the rest of the mussels. I couldn't eat her pasta, though! The pasta was not cooked properly, it had a clammy, pasty texture to it. So, instead, I picked at my son's leftover penne bolognaise pasta. I discreetly had a word to the waitress, explained the situation and said that I didn't want another meal to replace the undercooked pasta (everyone was finishing their meals by then) and she said she would take the dish back to the kitchen and speak to the chef. Eventually, the chef said we didn't have to pay for that particular meal.
Following mains, we had dessert. I shared the milk chocolate pannecotte(?)in a chocolate tart which I didn't like but my brother-in-law liked it. The coffees were all great and so was the limoncello liquer sorbet.
Siena's allows BYO wine which is fantastic! Corkage costs are about $3/bottle. They also have a great wine/beer list to choose from.
All up it only cost us about $25 each! A bargain considering we had entrees, mains (with a variety of side serves) and coffee/cakes.
Despite the grievances I have expressed, overall I was generally happy with my experience at Siena's. I will definitely be returning time and time again for the mere fact that this establishment provides an indoor playground and that, my friends, is an invaluable service that any restaurant can provide for a parent like me who loves to dine!!!
