Overall:
Myself, the partner and a friend visiting from Melbourne went to the Sparrow for a mid week meal and catch up. We were booked for 7pm which was a good idea as despite being midweek it was busy with the restaurant being completely full by 7.30.
We were greeted at the door by the friendly and enthusiastic owner and quickly shown to our seats. There was then a short wait to get the attention of the busy waitstaff who brought us wineglasses, took our order efficiently and delivered water no problems when asked. We ordered 2 entrees and 4 mains between the 3 of us as 2 are big eaters and having read about the small serving sizes thought that an extra main would be a good idea.
We had about a 10 minute wait for the food to come out so I took in the space. It is pretty much as you expect for budget end dining with plastic tablecloths, hard surfaces, not much in the way of decoration and fairly tight floorplan. There is adequate room between the tables though and they do leave enough room for the waitstaff to move around without having to bump into diners or invent new yoga moves to deliver the meals.
Our entrees consisted of the fried whitebait with peanuts and fish cake with eggplant but were delivered at the same time as the rest of the meal. Both were good, with the whitebait being particularly interesting, none of us had tried it cooked in this style before. The fishcake was also good, a generous size serving (similar size to the mains), we all enjoyed them and none was left behind.
Mains consisted of the Golden vegetables, Prawn Sambal, Bali Ayam and Beef Rendang. The Prawn Sambal had more than adequate base ingredients but was very mild, a little different to the hot and spicy sambal I was expecting. The golden vegetables were also fine, a little bland perhaps but it appeared to be fresh and also had good base ingredients. The Bali Ayam was good, mildly spicy and quite tasty with 2 decent pieces of chicken in a mild coconut milk based curry sauce. The Beef Rendang was very good with a good quality moderately spicy sauce and for the price generous pieces of reasonable quality beef. The serving sizes aren’t large and the quality isn’t top end but bear in mind that the mains vary in price from $6 to $9, this is some of the cheapest reasonable quality restaurant food in Perth. The food quantity was enough for us as we didn’t feel overfull nor were we looking for desserts so just about spot on.
We were finished by 8pm and all up price for the 2 entrees and 4 mains with rice was $38, or $35 with the first timers discount applied by the cheerful owner and host. The sparrow is great value reasonable to good quality food, a good option for a casual night out that won’t frighten the finances.
