Overall:
We decided to welcome in the New Year by sharing lunch (and a tipple or two!) with a couple of friends at The Subi Hotel and we ended up having a really great time seated in the alfresco area out the front!
To begin with, however, service was very slow. Although, considering this was one of the only venues open for service on New Years Day that was understandable. It was quite busy. Once the staff attended to our table, they were very friendly and informative.
Eventually, our waitress took our drinks order. We commenced with a couple of foreign beers and some taltarni pink sparkling, a delightfully light and refreshing drop! This place has an excellent wine list.
Our starters arrived - a Subi Plate and turkish bread to share. The turkish bread was soft and fresh and lightly toasted, absolutely addictive! The Subi Plate was filled with a variety of scrumptious morsels such as tempura style calamari with lime aioli sauce, crumbed salmon with dark sweet soy dipping sauce, mini boconcini, basil and prosciutto pizza, pork cake, sushi roll, potato gems, mini marinated olives and some other interesting tastings.
It took a while for the wait staff to recognise that we needed drink refills. We were served the capel vale dry red wine and the howard park riesling just before our mains arrived, but we had to practically beg someone to bring us our drinks.
Can I just add at this point that I felt that the table we were seated at was too small in size, it was hardly big enough to fit our plates and drinks on! It can be a little cumbersome having to shuffle objects around on the table all the time in an effort to make sure everything fits comfortably.
Mains arrived. I had the chinese-style crisp ocean trout, red chilli caramel dressing, tomato prawn salad. The fish was cooked to perfection - tender and moist on the inside and coated in a light asian batter. My other half had one of the specials, the scotch fillet with potatoes and fried onion rings. He said it was a little grissly, but still enjoyed his meal. Other members of our party had the prawn and pea risotto and a fancy looking parmagiana. We were all left completely satisfied. The food was definitely not pub-grub, more like upmarket cafe food.
For desserts we shared the vanilla brulee with berries and the raspberry éclair with chocolate sauce. The brulee came with a crusty toffee top (blow torched) which cracked open to reveal a soft creamy brulee resting on a bed of tiny black vanilla bean spots. Yum! The éclair was also irresistible, filled with a subtle creamy custard and sweet raspberries with a shot glass of sinfully rich chocolate sauce to pour over the top. I couldn't stop eating, but had to as I was soooo full by then I was starting to feel physically ill!!!
It costed $250 for the four of us.
After we paid the bill, we made our way to the cocktail bar. I had a Serengeti sunset which was a combination of mango and raspberry flavours in a slushy style drink. Another friend has a watermelon and vodka cocktail and someone else had a campari on ice. My other half had a cappuccino. Cocktails are $15 here, but well worth the money!
A very satisfying experience was had by all! We shall definitely return for another round one day.
