Welcome to Table 78

Table 78 - an informal, urban styled restaurant - is now open for business at 78 Outram Street (Corner Murray Street) in West Perth.

Modern, simple and subtlety decorated, Table 78 combines three heritage listed houses to create a casual and intimate dining experience, comfortably catering for 75 guests inside and 50 in its paved courtyard.

The restaurant’s layout and size ensures that there is plenty of available space to handle large groups and private functions. Parking is conveniently located behind the restaurant or in the multi story car park around the corner in Mayfair Avenue, less than 30 metres away.

Table 78 features an impressive and uncomplicated menu, with a carefully selected range of delicious mains and side dishes. The wine list includes many popular Western Australian and South Australian varieties. All the wines have been specifically chosen to compliment the menu.

Blending Italian and Mediterranean influences, Table 78 uses only the highest quality ingredients available to create modern Australian cuisine that is honest, with clean, strong flavours. Diners are urged to try the house specialty, Prawn, chilli and tomato linguini, prepared with fresh homemade pasta and a simple Napolitana sauce. For those desiring a lighter meal, oysters in a light tempura batter with pickled cucumber and chilli jam, is highly recommended. A chilled bottle of the Hamlin Bay Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect accompaniment to both dishes.

Table 78 benefits from the culinary talents and international experiences of Head Chef and Co-proprietor, Damien Brown, and Sous Chef, Matt Novak. Brown and Novak began their careers in Australia; first working together in the kitchen of Sydney’s MG Garage, for Head Chef, owner and renowned food perfectionist, Janni Kyritsis. A few years later they again teamed-up at London’s acclaimed Montes of Knightsbridge, where they honed their skills under the guidance of Ben O’Donoghue.

Damien, who manages the restaurant with his partner Hayley Rooke, sees Table 78 as a natural progression for the couple, having successfully run the Mount Street Café for the past two years, and having both been involved in the hospitality industry for most of their lives.

“Table 78 effectively combines our love for good, simple and tasty food, drawing on our experiences of working in the hospitality industry," says Hayley.

Damien adds: "My father was a restaurateur in Auckland where I grew up, so I have been actively involved in this business my whole life. Hayley and I share a similar knowledge, passion and philosophy for food and this industry, and Table 78 is the sum of this collective wealth of experience."

Opening Times Open for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday from 8am – 2pm;
Lunch Tuesday to Sunday from 12pm – 3pm
Dinner Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm ‘till late

Overall:
This restaurant is competent without being especially notable. The food is very well prepared but with a limited and somewhat unadventurous menu. It is in the steaks, lamb and simple fish genre - all excellently cooked but far from imaginative. There is a very limited choice for vegetarians or for anyone seeking something a bit different. In many ways, the menu is rather retro - for example, the chicken liver terrine was a highlight.
The ambience is harsh. There are no table cloths - perhaps acceptable during the day, but not at night. As a result of the hard surfaces, the room is noisy. This is not the place for an intimate dinner nor one where conversation is paramount.

Service is good to quite good, although we had to look distressed several times to attract the attention of the waiters at a time when the restaurant was about half full.

The wine list is adequate if not exciting and the prices for both food and wine represent good value for money. Would I go again? Yes, if in West Perth and probably at lunch time or when looking for something safe and well-executed. But I would not seek it out for a special occasion. Nor would I go there for serious business.

I went to table 78 for dinner with my husband on a busy Saturday night. I loved the oysters and that is something I would not normally eat. The menu is not huge but there is something for everyone. I had the prawn homemade linguini which was heaven and my husband had the lamb which was cooked really well. A side of mash between us was plenty and so smooth, mmmm.

For dessert we shared an unusual oatmeal creme brulee, it was fantastic. All in all table 78 has great food and worth checking out.

Overall:
I really liked Table 78...we went there for lunch. The interior of the restaurant has a really groovy feel to it. Their menu wasn't extensive, but what they do, they do well. We had the "olives" for a starter, which came out with olives, tasty chorizo and parmesan crackers. It was a nice starter. Entrees were a 250gm sirloin for me (juicy, tender and perfectly cooked with garlic butter on top and tasty shoestring fries). My boyfriend had the steak sandwich, also delicious. We shared the Belgium Chocolate Tart for dessert; it was nice and rich, served with raspberry (homemade?) preserves and cream. All in all, a wonderfully simple and delicious meal in a great setting with friendly, attentive service. This also seemed like the type of place I'd like to meet friends for drinks and a bite after work.
