Excellent value for money - a very cheap lunch and their sushi is delicious. Other meals are always quite oily and you're stuck for a "healthy" choice.

It will be busy, you will line up and then you'll collect your meal when your buzzer beeps - not much to it!

Always busy and often tables are dirty, but for the price of the food one shouldn't complain!

A cheap, filling meal that will satisfy you.

Taka is always reliable for a cheap and tasty Japanese meal. The ingredients are generally quite fresh and the serving size is generous. For lunch, this is a great option.

Service is always prompt and I have never had a problem with ordering a meal here. You pick up your plate from the side counter after your pager rings. Usually it doesn't take longer than about five minutes for the meal to arrive, depending on what you order.

It is a dining hall. If you sit outside on a nice day, it is actually quite pleasant.

Value for money is what you get here. I am yet to be disappointed for the amount that I pay.

Taka's is the best when it comes to value for money. I love the teriyaki tofu/fish. A large will set you back $7 and is a very generous serving with rice, salad and miso. I'll often order a small "set" with miso at fifty cents extra. Best for a late dinner before meeting up with friends for drinks.

The staff are friendly and efficient, the way Taka's is run is so simple that even during peak times everything operates smoothly which is no mean feat as Taka's gets verrrry busy. The beeper system works well; orders placed at the front counter and collected when the beeper sounds.

Decor is simple and what's been saved on trimmings is made up for with little touches, such as as much free green tea as you like, or a condiment station where you can help yourself as you please. Only negative is having to squeeze between the large number of tables and chairs packed in there.

I really love Taka's for a cheap, hearty meal. Best during non-peak times to avoid sitting elbow to elbow with a stranger, that is, if you manage to find a table!

Just got back from lunch with the girls at Taka's in Shafto Lane...and what a great place! Granted, it's not a five star japanese restaurant, but neither does it pretend to be. It's just a great place to meet up for a quick lunch and a chat, though you may have to yell to be heard, especially at peak times...it gets very busy.

Regardless, you order at the counter and take a seat, grab some free japanese green tea and your food's ready before you know it. I had the vege tempura (ordered a small, but looked more like a large) and my two friends had the katsudon and some salmon sushi. We all enjoyed our food thoroughly and for just $5 each, we were very satisfied.

Can't say a lot about the service, given that you order at the counter and pick up your food from the counter, but our tables were cleared promptly and our orders weren't messed up, so pretty good!

I've been going to Taka for lunch or dinner at least once a week since i arrived in Perth 2 years ago.

The only downside is that the place is always fully packed. Finding a seat is torturous and you have to hunt down people who are almost done eating and wait by the table.

There are too many tables in the Barrack St branch if u ask me. You can barely squeeze into one of the tables in the middle.

The floors used to be slippery, oily and gross. I even fell on my bum once at the entrance bcos of the greasy floor.

But now it seems they've gotten someone to clean the floors better.

I absolutely love the miso katsu, with a generous dash of chilli powder and chilli sauce on the side. Will make my day anytime.

A favourite haunt of students and otaku, Taka's Kitchen is the place to go for cheap Japanese on the go. Starting out as a food hall shop in the Metro Food Court in Perth and also in Old Shanghai in Fremantle, I've watched this concept expand into the restaurants in Shafto Lane and also now on Barrack/Wellington Streets. This place is always busy at lunchtime, which makes the beeper system that much more convenient and efficient.

This is definitely a casual restaurant for cheap eats before a movie or lunch break. The great thing is that you can go up to the counter and get as much or as little extra condiments as you like, and the green tea is free! Plus the wasabi is nice and strong :p

All your typical Japanese favourites are here, particularly the katsu, teriyaki and karaage, as well as the nori maki and sushi. Serves are great value for the price, with a typical large serve being less than $10

I've heard so much about this place, so I'm guessing that may have set me up for a fall... It wasn't quite as awesome as I was expecting.

Enough has been said about the ambience and service style in other reviews - personally I've got nothing against this style... It's efficient and cost effective, which helps to keep prices down, and it's hard to get more casual.

The food was good value and quite nice. A cut above the standard Japanese-takeaway template, but not a big cut to be honest. The sushi I had was a bit dry and boring - I'll take Jaws any day.

Apart from the sushi, I had the teriyaki beef, which was quite tasty. It's definitely good value.

Not all that much more to say really. I think I was just expecting more of a "restaurant" than a Japanese cafeteria. Still, it's a good place to feed a group on the cheap in the city.

Another outstanding experience at TAKA in Barrack, the food is cheap but consistently delicious.

This time we went for a big dinner which did not disappoint.

We had the ever favourite teriyaki chicken don, the katzu don, which was truly full on meat, egg and bursting flavour. Vegetables tempura, which were crispy and with a good variety of veggies, fried chicken good but I don’t think I will have this dish again, and teriyaki and salmon sushi, which came still warm and delicious, although the rice wasn’t sticky enough, probably due to the fact that it wasn’t sushi rice. We paid 33$ and we were very full but fully satisfied. Go Taka GO!

What can I say about Taka that has not been said by the other reviewers? Cafeteria dining meets Japanese cuisine!

I thought the free self-service urn of tea a nice touch. The food is definitely cheap and cheerful. The sashimi box set I had was very nice, although I admit I have had better quality sashimi elsewhere but for $10 for the box set, who is complaining?! The miso soup was about the nicest I have tried. The bit of teriyaki fish I tried was very light and tasty.

A bit far for me to travel, so it won't be a regular haunt for me, but would definitely dine there again if I was in the neighbourhood. Would like to try their sushi. Would have taken some home with me today but the queue was too long for me to contemplate doing so! Maybe next time.

The restaurant is really popular with students, young family and young professionals. You simply cannot get such good value for such fresh Sashimi, Teriyaki or Tempura. The favorites are the Katsu Don, teriyaki beef or chicken and of course, the Udon. The set menu makes ordering really easy and you don't have to think too hard or break the budget for a really decent night out.

The downside is the ambience (common tables inside), but that can be compensated by the al fresco dining outside, sometimes accompanied by the good ol' Irish music from the bar across the lane. Definitely a great restaurant, tucked in a quite (and quaint) touristy lane in central CBD.

Even for a seasoned restaurateur like me, I would give the restaurant a “best value for money”. It somewhat reminds me of Sushi Suma www.sushisuma.com in Sydney’s CBD district.

It's a surprise that Taka was not voted in the Top 10 (Japanese restaurants) by the members. No doubt it is self service and lacking in ambience but what the heck with such delicious and generous portions at cheap prices. Where else can you get a set meal for $6.50 with a main dish, miso soup, salad, pickle and tea ?

Taka is our faithful fortnightly (sometimes weekly) joint where 2 large and 1 small serve leaves our family of 2 adults + 3 children (under 7) more than satisfied for dinner. Favourites are the fish / chicken teriyaki, chicken karaage, tempura and california rolls. For the small serve, we tend to get the katsudon which is bursting with pork, egg, onions & pickles on rice served in a bowl. When it comes out steaming hot, it is just so mouthwatering that I am reluctant to share it with the kids.

The small serve at $4.50 is perfect for lunch for those who are lucky to be working in the vicinity. If you have yet to try the place, give it a go and I doubt, in fact, I'm sure that you won't be disappointed. Although, it is self service, you can be seated and not having to hang around the counter as the electronic device given to you will flash and vibrate when your meal is ready.

The best sushi in Perth in my opinion, makes a great lunch on weekends, although be prepared to wait as it's very busy and they prepare the sushi fresh!
The fresh sushi is what makes me come back, check out the crab salad rolls and tempura prawn - my mouth is watering just thinking about it.
