A great change from the microwaved mush one usually associates with 'Mexican' food. Went on a cold, winter night, place was not busy, few local families with young kids having dinner. Very friendly waitress. For entree we had chili con queso dip with blue corn chips - divine! And an amazingly tasty warm chorizo and olive dish cooked in balsamic. We did cheat and dip the olives & chorizo into the con queso towards the end when the chips ran out!! Naughty but nice.

For mains, I wanted to try something really different, so took the waitresses recommendation and had the maize/pork soup thing. Certainly different, very tasty& light, but was expecting a bit more meat. Partner had chimichanga which was substantial and tasted lovely.

Service:

Really helpful waitress, but the older Indian guy lurking in the background seems a little out of place?

Ambience:

Small and cosy, open kitchen. Tables are a bit too close to each other, particularly if you are a couple trying to have a bit of an evening. Love the movie posters on the walls.

Overall:
We jokingly said we would deduct points for any tacky Mexicana-type decorations, but didnt spot any - but then! Hidden in the back room a sombrero! (original leather and 30 yrs old so dont think it counts). Great place to try something different, extensive menu - was hard to make decision, so will be back to try something else!

This was my second visit as I enjoyed (obviously) the first time, but was a little bit disappointed this time round. My two friends did not enjoy their main meals, and even doubted it was what they ordered. Our entree of guacamole at $14 was tiny! And when one of my friends asked for extra sour cream with her main the bowl was nearly as small as a thimble!

On a positive note, my other friend loved her hot chocolate.

Service:

Our waiter was very friendly however I did have to ask for water after waiting for 10 minutes from arrival, and again when it ran out. Our reservation was at 6.45pm and at no time were we told we only had to 8.30pm, as at 8.30pm we were asked to leave for the next diners! Not impressed.

Ambience:

Nice decor, comfy sits (even though I could not push my chair back any further as the wall stopped it), however I noticed many diners in couples were sat extremely close to the other couples so god forbid if you were talking in confidence.

Overall:
For the price of this Mexican food, and the taste of it, my local pub does a hell of a lot better! And for half the price.

Outstanding, not your usual Tex Mex. Enjoyed the jalapeno rellenos (REALLY HOT) and quesadilla de calabaza (really delicious) for entree. The mains were the standout I had the soft tortilla filled with cactus, mushroom and chayote, it was a great blend of flavours that worked really well together and the first time I had tried cactus. The boy had a fish tortilla concoction which he thoroughly enjoyed. We were very impressed that there was none of the standard nachos/tacos and we weren't stuffed full of cheese when we left.

Service:

Attentive and friendly though there was some confusion as both wait persons that we had didn't speak English very well. It certainly didn't mar our experience however and it was nice to be smiled at for a change.

Ambience:

I really like the fitout in this restaurant, the blue hanging lights etc it did get quite loud however as there aren't any soft furnishings to absorb the noise.

Overall:
I look forward to going back and enjoying some more options off their menu after being so impressed with what we have already sampled.

Myself and two others dined at the Bentley TLMP, on Berwick Street. The food and service were both outstanding. We never waited very long for our entrees or mains yet the staff apologised a number of times for the wait, and were overall very friendly. The food is not like your standard Mexican food, so there's no chicken/beef/vegetarian: tacos/enchiladas/fajitas. They offer more traditional Mexican food. For entree we had blue organic corn chips (blue is apparently traditional) with a variety of dipping sauces, and also with some chilli con queso which was nice. For mains I had Tacos Pescados - a dish that comprised of lightly battered red emperor fish in a soft tortilla which was really nice, my sister had Chiqeules - a dish with chicken, corn chips and chorizo - this was the favourite dish which we would definitely go back for.

What a great restaurant, to keep things short, food was fantastic, everything you would expect and more. Moreover, the restaurant actually had a soul, the owner and chefs took pride in their work, you could feel it. They had different fresh cooked meals and deserts, as well as delicious homemade beverages and fresh juices. I'm a fairly fussy eater, and I ate up everything on my plate. My girlfriend purchased the nicer of the 2 meals, so if you are going, my advice would be the spiced chilli steak wrapped in tortilla I believe, it's on the main section, yum. Under 80 dollars for a romantic 3-4 course meal and non-alcoholic beverages.

This is my third visit to TLMP, and to be honest, if it had been my first visit I would never go again. Readers of this web site will know that I have raved about TLMP in the past, as both other times have been fab: with great food; knowledgeable service and geat ambience. HOWEVER when I went for brunch on Sunday the experience was nowhere near as good. The coffees that were served to us were lukewarm and one was spilt all over one of the diners (and was not mopped up or apologised for), and we had to ask for refills to our water glasses (which also resulted in another un-mopped up spillage). Foodwise all the savoury dishes were ok - we all had some version of the hash brown and eggs combo, BUT when the pancakes were brought out we were informed that they "were probably not cooked but if you could taste them and let us know"....that was not what we wanted to hear. As it turned out the batter was almost raw. The waitress did take them back and more were made, but by the time they were brought out, the rest of the table had finished their dishes. We were also expected to pay for them, which I think was a bit rude.

All in all I was really disappointed as I have recommended TLMP to all and sundry. All I can think of is that because it was a Sunday morning (I have previously been on a weds and fri evening) the staff were still asleep? The owner wasn't there and perhaps the wait staff need his guidance and direction? This is a shame however as now I am not sure whether I will return. I thought I had found my fave Perth restaurant......but.......perhaps I have to keep looking.

This was my second visit to that Little Mexican Place - since first discovering it in Feb 07. I have to say that I preferred the original menu boards (the cheaper, larger framed versions) although was pleased to see that the contents of the menu remained unchanged - phew! I also think that there were more tables than before which must mean that the secret is out regarding the place!

Service was good as always and we were seated with a view into the kitchen which provided us with an interesting distraction.

We ordered the chicken taco roll things and chorizo and olives for entree, with lamb burrito and chicken and chorizo with tortilla strips for mains. Both were good although the lamb was better in the sense that it was more flavoursome. The chicken dish also looked a bit unappealing (although did taste good).

Had churros for dessert again and was still impressed.

Even though there was a glitch with the stereo towards the end of our meal, the owner (?) dealt with the problem graciously and with good humour, and it was good to see that he was still taking the time out on a busy Friday night to talk to patrons - this is a really sincere touch and shows his continued passion for the restaurant and a concern that people enjoyed their experience.

As I said before, I will be coming back - this time to try the Breakfast/Lunch menu which sounds really interesting!!

The first thing I noticed about this place was its complete lack of your typical (and very very tacky) Mexican paraphernalia. No sombreros, no cacti adorning the entrance...it looked almost...normal! It was so atypical of Mexican that we drove past it three times without realising. And I think its fantastic.

Out for some late night munchies after a long day of packing, with fellow foodie, Kefka, and two others, we decided to see what That Little Mexican Place had to offer. The thing that impressed me most was the menu. While it had less choices, the choices were interesting and different from your usual "Tacos, Enchiladas, Burrittos and Quesadillas with - chicken/beef/lamb/frijol". For entree, we decided to be adventurous and try the quesadilla de nopal (cactus), which in hindsight was purely novelty and not that impressive. For mains there was the chilaquiles, chicken, chorizo and cheese sautéed with mild green chiles; quesadilla de carne asada, pretty much just a quesadilla with steak pieces inside, but very tasty; carnitas de puerco; burrito de barbacoa. All came with spicy rice, frijol and a bit of lettuce, tomato and guacamole. On the recommendation of the owner, the others decided to try the "agua fresca", which turned out to be something similar to watered down fruit juice...which sounds kind of bland but was quite refreshing. I had a Mexican hot chocolate, and while I'm not sure I could taste the difference to normal hot chocolate, the cinnamon did add a nice flavour.

Service was unfortunately somewhat slow, most probably due there only being three staff, including the owner. The place is tiny, so there wouldn't be much use employing extra waitstaff. The setup seems most suited to groups of two, as if you have four people, you still only have the one table and significantly less room for the very large plates that come out. I'm not entirely sure why, but it took a fair while to recieve our food aswell, as every table's food came out at once, rather than being distributed table by table as they were made ready. Nevertheless, service was excellent as the staff were friendly and quite happy to explain the menu.

With the exception of space, the layout was good and simple, although lighting was a bit dark. There is even a cute little function area (though still only can accommodate about 8 people max) out the back all decked out like the kitchen inside somebody's house in Mexico. The toilets were clean although I did find it a bit odd being able to see my car from the open window and wondered if someone standing in the carpark could see inside as well.

Prices stand at around $20 for mains and are well worth it. The food is original and creative, and has a greater feel of authentic cuisine rather than something you could get out of a packet of Old El Paso.

Reservations are a must, as this place is very popular and there aren't that many tables to begin with!

Came here with a group of four for dinner. First things first, it is indeed a very little restaurant. I recommend going with just two people, or maybe five or six - that way you can spread out across two tables. Four people at one little table with big plates and glasses gets a little too cramped for my liking.

The ambience was otherwise quite nice - a little dark, but quite cheerful.

Service wasn't great - It's a small place, so more than one waitress isn’t really needed and would probably get in the way... The lady who served us was very nice, enthusiastic and well informed about the food - but things took a while to come out / plates to be cleared, and getting her attention was hard at times.

The food was great - It's nice to see a Mexican place which doesn't rely on filling most of the menu with basic tacos, enchiladas and burritos. There are some very interesting and unique items. Everyone seemed happy with their meals, although the corn chips were a little stale.

Nice place, but the ambience would be better for couples though. Oh, and while it isn't licensed, you can BYO spirits (bottle shop nearby) and they'll make up a few cocktails for you.

I felt I had to review this restaurant as soon after my experience there as possible, so that I could share with others the great time I had at That Little Mexican Place. This could easily become one of my favourite restaurants in Perth.

I booked a table for two on a mid week night and the first thing that i noticed was the ambience and cheerful atmosphere of the place - with almost all the tables occupied. I had been worried that owing to the mid week time slot, the place would be dreary but not so!

We were seated quickly and presented with menus. Having already taken a sneaky peek of the menu on the website, we ordered the chicken tacos and prawns for our entree. The food arrived quickly and was eaten almost as quickly! The prawns were smoky and lime-y and the chilli accompanying them was delicious. The chicken was Moorish and just the right size to whet the appetite.

The good service continued as our main meals arrived. We ate the Red Emperor and the Lamb burrito and both were excellent. The fish was firm and in perfect tempura style batter (not too heavy) and the lamb was indeed slow roasted and moist as promised. The servings were again just right!

I don't normally indulge in 3 courses when I go out, but we were having such a good time we decided to linger for dessert. We shared the churros which were deliciously warm and fresh tasting!

Whilst finishing dessert we spoke with the chef. This little attention to service really highlights what a good restaurant this is - the people working there are obviously proud of the place and enjoy speaking with customers (many who become regulars).

Eventually it was time to go - but I will definitely be back!! Perth needs more restaurants like this, authentic, lively, with a variety of fine food on offer and something a bit different with which to tempt the public!

We decided to go out for a festive dinner on Thursday night to warm up for the Australia Day Celebrations and seeing as it was a balmy night decided on trying out some Mexican at "That Little Mexican Place." We rounded up a few friends and a few bottles of wine and headed to North Perth.

The restaurant is a small cosy, converted semi, with exposed brick walls, with blue and yellow featuring in the decor.

On arrival we were informed that we would be dining in the "Kitchen" (the restaurant was full) this sounded rather intriguing, and she led us down the hall past the current kitchen to a small back area, that obviously was the original kitchen of the home. The old rustic stove was still position in an alcove, but was adorned with Mexican paraphernalia, and margherita glasses which were doubling as candle holders and they had set up to tables, joining them with a panel of glass which covered both tables, making a very fun dining room!

There were six of us and we were happy to have a private area (and thought that the other guests would appreciate us being located at a distance!) Mexican music was playing on a stereo and the room was dimly lit.

We sat down and commenced trying to decide what tasty morsels we wanted for entree and main...

After much deliberating I chose "taquitos de pollo" which was crispy rolled chicken tacos with guacamole, for entree, and the "burrito de barbacoa" for main which was like a lamb and rice burrito.

The one thing that certainly stands out is that the menu is certainly a lot more originally than the norm in the Mexican restaurants in Perth, and obviously reflects the more traditional Mexican food than the commercialised meals more often found.

My entree was well presented and the food was brought out promptly, some people found the servings a little small (about three people ordered the "ceviche" which was meant to scallops marinated in citrus, with mango, sriracha and coriander, but there was only one scallop sliced per serve.. and at $10 thought that there should have been more a little more to it.) but mine was fine, it was two rolled crispy chicken tacos.. They were definitely set off by the guacamole sauce which was delightful.

My main was lovely, although I was expecting more of a kick out of the Mexican chilies it came with! The lamb was tender, the flavour was a little mild but pleasing.

After a few drinks we all decided we could squeeze in desserts and I decided on these sort of doughnut cigars with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce, and it was delicious, the doughnut cigars were a little less sweet than I had anticipated but were warm and thoroughly enjoyable.

The service throughout the night was wonderful, our waitress was very obliging throughout the evening.

Although it was pretty warm where were located this warm balmy feel managed to add to the atmosphere…it really did almost feel like we were in Mexico!

We will definitely return to try out some more of the traditional Mexican dishes on offer. A fun evening that gives you a little taste of Mexico!

It’s also BYO at $3 per person.

This place is a gem.

Like most people who have never been to Mexico, I didn't really know what Mexican food was until I visited this place.

I was used to the large chain-style Good, Bad, Ugly type places and that was my only Mexican experience.

What a joy to discover somewhere local serving real Mexican food in a cosy restaurant setting with passionate wait staff.

The food is varied, creative, well cooked and delicious - with lots of interesting ingredients like cactus!

The service has always been very good with staff actually being informed about the food and about Mexico, even though they're not Mexican.

It's BYO only but there is a bottleshop and the Hyde Park Hotel near by.

They are just starting to serve breakfasts which I have not tried but can't wait. Note that if you want eggs on toast, this is NOT the place to go. It's a Mexican breakfast and looks really interesting.

This is a very tiny restaurant - maybe seating 30 people at a squeeze, so better for an intimate gathering and make sure you book.

This is one of those little treasures that you stumble upon occasionally. Mexican restaurants can often seem to be just about the "novelty factor". But don't get me wrong this petite restaurant isn’t shy of novelty but what sets it apart from the other Mexican eats around is the authenticity of food and quality of service.

Being such a cosy little place insists that one books ahead. The restaurant asks for BYO only, but for finances sake who can complain with that. The food is adventurous and over all very tasty but perhaps lacking to a degree in the seasoning department. The menu is very affordable; with I believe the most expensive dish being in the mid twenties.

So give it a try for your self, my husband and I will certainly endevour to return.

We have been to this restaurant twice and had some excellent dishes. My other half lived in Mexico and said the food was very authentic. The desserts are superb. There are some very nice sounding dishes on the menu and looking forward to trying them out on further visits. The staff could no be any more helpful - they were great.

The food here is pretty authentic. The restaurant is small but comfortable. The service is friendly and well informed about Mexican food and ingredients.

I had 2 beautiful tamales. I love tamales! My husband had a perfectly cooked carne asada. Both came with fried beans and rice. Also, served with a trio of homemade salsa. But I must confess that I feel things were not seasoned properly. Everything needed salt. Even the table next to us requested the salt shaker. If only I could have had a nice margarita with a salted rim to make up for the lack of salt in my food. Also, I prefer my guacamole on the chunky side not smooth as it was serve here.

Seasoning aside, I am looking forward to returning and tasting more of their (unique to Perth) Mexican fare. Viva Mexico!
