  • As a Vegetarian, I find it extremely difficult to eat out in WA and when you do find somewhere that has a vegetarian meal, it's usually a lentil pattie and chips which, isn't particularly satisfying for an evening meal!

We now live in Albany having lived in Perth surrounds and are delighted to have come across The Venice who have a large selection of foods and cater well for us veggies.

We attend weekly now and usually have a garden salad which is the best I've ever tasted in a restaurant and, pizza. Absolutely delicious pizza and if you are a veggie and like me you want rennet free cheese, they'll do that for you.

My other favourite is the Gnocci, it's absolutely great. I don't eat nuts and so they remove the macadmia, huge!

  • We wouldn't go every week if the service was poor. Fantastic service, helpful and friendly, will go out of their way to accommodate your needs and as already stated above, will remove or add things to your meal to suit likes, allergies etc. Brilliant!

  • Good family environment although it does become unbearably noisy at times. There isn't music and there is very little in the way of furnishings to drown out the noise. We attend early so that we miss the worst of it at peak times. The volume of noise is The Venice Cafe's only downfall, hard to chat.

  • Venice is the home of the biggest veal parmigiani I have ever seen, surpassing the plate-stretching monsters served up by the Romany in Northbridge.

A busy pizzeria on Albany' main strip, Venice dishes up good wholesome food at a reasonable price.
We went on a cold Monday night but the place was packed with locals and visitors who appeared to have received the word that this joint can be relied on for a good bite.

The veal was massive but tasty, a margarita pizza better than adequate and a calamari salad pretty good.
Venice is BYO but there is a pub bottleshop over the road and we got a sensational Bunn shiraz ($23) that sells itself as a local drop that is produced without preservatives and other chemicals and was worth every cent.

  • Popped in here wanting something 'wicked' one afternoon when we first arrived in Albany having driven from Denmark (on holiday out of Perth). We liked the look of the Venice ('warm' appearance and nicely lit) and despite being only one of two couples in there, we felt quite at home inside and took one of the window tables to enjoy some people watching over hot chocolates and cakes.

Service was prompt but without pressure. My partner had a lemon cheesecake, which upon sampling it, I'd say was distinctly lacking in lemon. He loved it however so I guess that's what counted. I had a mocha-like cheesecake - sold to me as "like Baileys". It wasn't actually so I was disappointed but it was still good. From memory we paid around $7 a slice and actually I found that on the pricey side for what we got.

The restaurant itself is vast and no doubt come peak-hour is buzzing (we were there around 3pm on a weekday).

  • Continuing our journey through the south west, we popped into Albany for dinner and the latest Harry Potter flick. Not familiar with the local restaurants, we did the standard thing of cruising around the CBD until we found somewhere that looked nice. To our slight disappointment, most places seemed rather empty, even for a Thursday night. Then we noticed the Venice Pizzeria. Every other cafe was empty because the people of Albany were all here!

From the outside it looks like your typical Italian cafe, homey kind of feel, with warm Tuscan colours. On the inside it was bustling, pizzas and pasta dishes being whisked out of the kitchen and coke spiders on every second table.

As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the owner and seated at a table despite them being almost at capacity, in fact soon after we noticed that people were being turned away because they were full.

The menu was quite big, with several different choices (as opposed to choose your pasta and a sauce to go with it...). As I noticed they didn't have an entree size or small/large choice for the pasta dishes, I asked the owner when he came to take our orders. His response was that they were a good size for 1 person but not ridiculously huge. Which I was quite pleased to hear. The prices were a little higher that what I'd normally pay but I am glad I did because when it came out it was a proper dish, not mix n match pasta. While the name escapes me now, my dish consisted of three large chicken filled shell pasta and a yummy Napoli sauce and topped with melted cheese. My husband had his favourite ham and pineapple pizza and he seemed quite pleased, saying that it was the best pizza he'd had in an actual cafe/restaurant due the thick and fluffy crust and just the right amount of topping.

They also quite happily made an Iced Mocha despite it not being on the drinks menu, and when it came out, not only was it served in a large milkshake glass, but they also gave me what was left over in the mixer container thingy, so pretty much the equivalent of two typical servings when one usually orders an iced chocolate or coffee.

So pizza and pasta, plus drinks came to about $40 in total. We were both very happy with the food and the service which was fast and very efficient. We asked the waitress at the till if they were always this busy on weeknights and she said that it was, so it would seem to be very popular with the locals.
