Overall:
This is a favourite restaurant of mine, and my officemates and I frequently pick a Friday (or 2) out of every month to have lunch at Viet Hoa. The ambience isn't much to speak of (plastic plants hung from the ceiling and Japanese paintings on the wall - I thought it was Vietnamese restaurant?) and the table arrangement can be a bit squishy during a busy service. But overall, it's a great place to go for good value, quality Vietnamese food and be in and out within 45 minutes.
The rice paper rolls are superb, and are among the favourite and most popular entrees of our group. But we are learning to try something new with each visit, and have added the spring rolls (probably the best in Perth) and the stuffed chicken wings to the list as well.
The soups and noodle dishes are excellent, and every main course is always a bountiful serving. You are presented with a plate bursting with fresh bean sprouts and coriander with every soup (Try the PHO TAI NAM cooked and raw beef hofan soup - delicious!). The stir fried chicken with broccoli, cashew nut and mushroom is very tasty (best with a small order of rice) as well as the stir fried beef in black bean sauce. One of these days I will see if I can get my office gaggle to bite the bullet and order one of the banquets, as they sound very tasty and look like good value for money!
The service is usually very perfunctory, not incredibly warm and welcoming, but they get the job done. There have been a couple of staff changes as of late, but everything seems to have the same flow of efficiency. After being seated (or asked to seat yourself, depending on how busy it is), the waitresses are attentive to take your orders and get right down to it. Viet Hoa is usually VERY BUSY during the lunch hour, and it seems the quicker they can get you seated and eating, the sooner they can free up the table for more bodies to feed. Don't get me wrong, there isn't an overall feeling of "eat up and get out", they're quite happy to let you take your time to enjoy your meal. But the majority of the lunchtime patrons have jobs to get back to (as we do on our outings), so the fact they are quick to get you in and out is actually quite refreshing. Time is money and you're not making it sitting around waiting to get your order taken!
Overall, Viet Hoa is a great choice for good quality, fresh Vietnamese food in a cheap and cheerful venue. Next time you're in the mood for a "quick bite" of noodles or a good, hearty soup, give Viet Hoa a try.
