- The satay chicken was very peanut-y and quite morish. Unfortunately the sweet and sour sauce we had with our pork was utterly tasteless. It did look like they had made it themselves which was good but we were bitterly disappointed that it had absolutely no flavour let alone being sweet or sour. The pork balls themselves though were not too bad & had good sized bits of pork & were not just all batter. The fried rice didn't seem to be fried at all, it was more like rice that had stuff added to it and may have hit a pan for about 5 seconds. The prawn crackers weren't warm so were obviously not fresh but they didn't taste stale. Considering the price ($34.50) it was expensive considering we've had better food and more of it elsewhere for less.

- The service was not rude or unfriendly but the gentleman behind the counter, while patient given we hadn't been there before and didn't know the menu, was monotone and not particularly friendly either. He was very polite and well spoken but a little warmth and personality goes a long way.

- We only got take away and it was 5:30 on a Wednesday but there was no ambience as the restaurant was empty. The lighting seemed a too bright though and the decor was very stark but with chinese relics around the place. We were stuck out in the entrance waiting for the food which seemed in the way.

- Honestly, considering all the hype we heard about this place I was very disappointed & quite frankly those that rave about it have clearly been deprived of good chinese food (Sweet & Sour is a basic staple). We were further disappointed because this is our new local & the last one in City Beach (Pearl River) was a far cry better in food, friendly staff & atmosphere in the restaurant (it was pretty busy at 5:30 usually). I don't think we'll be rushing back & we'll just have to find a new local.

Wonderfully prepared and very generous serves. Try the Peking Style Pork Ribs, the Nasi Goreng, Char Kway Teow (they spell it differently) and the Bird's Nest Seafood. I was overawed by the good 'local Westernised' style of food presentation - the restaurant was near full on a Wednesday night.
The food was so good, but we were full from the large portions that I ended up taking the leftovers home with me for the following day's dinner! - Service

- Excellent service! The staff were calm, presentable, fluent in English and they even remember their regular customers by name. I was surprised at their obliging attitudes and professionalism.

- I dined here on Wednesday, 18JUN with 2 friends who'd known about this place and never mentioned it to me. I can't wait to go again, just for the Peking-style Pork Robs!

- My Parent's in Law took me and the family here to help celebrate my belated 28th B'day....very sweet of them. The car park was packed....always a positive sign. This place has won a lot of Gold Plates, quite surprising as it appears as a down to earth typical family Chinese restaurant. The menu is full of the typical choices, all around the $13 to $18 mark. The service was good, considering the Restaurant was full and the food was good...nothing spectacular but typical. This Restaurant is a great place to take the family.

-
I recently visited the Wing Bo with my mother for an inpromptu lunch stop. We had planned to have Lunch somewhere, but when we decided on an old favorite Chinese Restaurant in Mt Lawley we found it was closed for Friday Lunchtimes (Go figure!). It was by chance from there that a traffic accident blocking Beaufort Street (and a detour from there taking back towards Railway Pde where we encountered roadworks) that a further detour found us heading North along Guildford Rd.
We happened upon the Wing Bo and noticing it was open and had a fairly full carpark (which suggested to us it was a popular and thriving business), we stopped off.
Our initial impression of the place was spacious and warm. The wait staff were very pleasant and we were seated (without a reservation) very quickly and without any fuss.
We were asked if we'd like to order a drink as we pondered the menu. As it was a light lunch planned we opted for a simple Lemon, Lime & Bitters each.
Our menu choices were Spring Rolls (2 per serve each) and I would have to say they were nice but I'd agree with the previous reviewer of this restaurant to say they "were not the best I've tasted" - there was an obvious taste of celery in them.
I might add that this was the ONLY (if only a minor) negative to the entire eating experience at Wing Bo! So future patrons please do not be put off by that comment!!!
For main meal we ordered Satay Chicken and Honey King Prawns with a small serve of Fried Rice. Both main dishes were absolutely delicious. Probably the best satay I have tasted in a long time. The Honey Prawns were to die for.
The Fried Rice was simple tasty and had mixture of vegetables, egg and meat/shrimp throughout. All came to our table steaming hot and the aroma was divine.
Mum wanted to order a lunch special for her elderly, housebound neighbour, who had asked if we could get her something while we were out. She had selected Curried King Prawns with rice (a lunch special) and her impression of the meal (when she later enjoyed it) was 'It tasted amazing'. She was delighted with the entire dish. Our waiter placed the Curried Prawn lunch takeaway order for us as we enjoyed our 'in restaurant' meal (so that the takeaway one would be ready fresh as we were about to leave the restaurant).
Our dining experience was a true joy, the service was infallible, the staff very obliging and from the atmosphere of fellow diners around us we sensed that many were regulars to the restaurant as they seemed to be known to the staff.
We were very happy with our meal and the presentation of all dishes.
They were happy for us to pay separately for the meal and the takeaway one - which was great!
I can see that the Wing Bo will be a place we will return. It was by chance that we came across this restaurant and we were very pleased that traffic detour/conditions beyond our control lead us to this jewel in the heart of Maylands.

Wing Bo is a large 1980's built scorched brick Restaurant with ample free parking wrapping around one side. Despite being a Monday evening the place is relatively full (with one fully fledged birthday party in a far corner) and although our group of four did not have reservations, this was no problem and we were immediately seated. My first impressions: this is a good size restaurant (with function room facility) where one can stretch out and the tables are not squashed together with no hope of movement. The place also had a good ambience despite the size and decorated in the homely Chinese Restaurant style of scrolls, porcelain tablets and fish tank.
The service here is very fast and courteous. We all opted for a set menu ($22 each) from a large choice of at least 10 or so set menus ranging from about $20 - $30. The menu of separate dishes if you so choose also extensive as a Chinese Restaurant should be. Each course came out promptly and after consumption was quickly taken away and the next dish out in record time. For starters we had fried spring rolls and prawn toast followed by a chicken and corn soup. Not the best spring rolls I have tasted, but a really nice soup with real chicken breast pieces. As for the prawn toast, I have always wondered which western country was responsible for this creation. Mains consisted of a special fried rice, fried noodles, satay beef, lemon chicken and a seafood stir fry bird’s nest. This was very plentiful, tasty and I really enjoyed the spicy fried vermicelli noodle, nicely flamed cook in the wok taste and not soggy. To top it off, the meal ended with ice-cream - for an extra $2 we converted this to fried ice cream, the staff very accommodating with this request. For the uninitiated - fried ice cream is a ball of vanilla ice cream deep fried in a coconut crumbed shell. Haven’t had this for years!
I would say this place is very good for a decent Westernised-Chinese feed for a very cheap price! Any size group suitable. Everything I expected well executed and a very friendly manageress. We brought our own wine and were given a bucket and ice and this was free of charge! Plus free prawn crackers on arrival, coolies!
Thank you to Kris Bear and Miss T for inviting us along on their first date and congratulations!
