I've been to the Freo Zapatas and the NB also. Freo I got a fajitas for 2 with a friend, another friend also got a single serve of fajitas. Our "for two" difference in size to the singular serve was: 6 tortillas instead of 3, a serve of chicken that would fill maybe 4 tortillas, and a bigger plate for salad (but the same amount of salad none-the-less.) Also came with Sour cream and salsa (ie chopped tomato...salsa??) and it was BLAND. I couldve made an Old De Paso kit myself with more punch. In NB i ordered the nachos with medium spice. there was a kick in about 3 bites, but not enough to warrant a "medium" rating. Food is ok, just dont get the shared platters cus its a major rip-off! I got the nachos on a half-price nachos night thank god.
Service was good in both places, what you expect really. Staff were attentive.
Freo's restaurant is up some stairs and NB is al fresco style. Both are nice and play spanish music in the background. They are quite well decorated and suit the "cheesy" feel that mexican food needs.
Overall:
Cocktails were quite nice, particularly the Colombian Fiesta. Go for the cocktails, not the food. I dont think I'll be in a hurry to come back to Zapatas, seeing as I can make better mexican at home using a kit brought from Coles. Why bother paying $20 for a night out when a taco kit is only $5?
The food was spectacularly average and over priced. I chose to order the spicy chicken and chips and ended up wishing we'd just gone to Nando's and received better food for $10 less. Other dishes around the table failed to impress and ensured that i had no interest in coming back to sample something different.
The staff seemed to have no knowledge of the menu and could not answer simple questions such as what dishes came with. Multiple orders were wrong and and at one point i had to order 1 beer 3 times before they managed to get it right. Many orders came late even though the restaurant was half full.
the ambience was good as the restaurant was small and not overly busy with light music playing in the background.
Overall:
In addition to the unbelievably poor service, the restaurant managed to destroy a very expensive ice cream birthday cake due to the freezer breaking down. While i accept that this is no fault of the restaurant, the fact that they failed to notify us of the problem before the cake was completely melted so that we could make arrangements and salvage it was just the icing on the cake. I will not be eating at Zapata's again.
The Food at Zapata's Northbridge restauraunt is delicious. There is a suiutable variety of traditional Mexican and Latino dishes available to choose from and meals can be suited to your taste ie: mild, medium or hot.Menus are written with detail, explaining what each dish comprises and combination dishes as well as sharing platters are available for those who'd like to try a bit of everything.
The service at Zapata's Northbrige is fantastic.Wait staff are quick to seat its patrons and ensure they are comfortable before promptly taking orders after a few minutes to view the menu.Staff are friendly and attentive and are happy to answer any questions.(Some are quite easy on the eye too!)
The ambience at Zapata's is amazing with the resteraunt featuring a fantastic variety of spanish and latin music which is energetic and creates a great atmosphere. The decor is beautiful, featuring a vaiety of art and other pieces that showcase the pride of and wonder that is Latin America.
Overall:
Zapata'sNorthbridge is a fantastic restauraunt. With delicious food, great music and excellent service i love going there often& can't wait to try the Fremantle Restauraunt which features live Latin music on Sat nights. It's a great place to start a fun night out or celebrate a Birthday etc.Its usually busy so better to book first but don't worry, they'll always make room 4u.Oh and while you're there check out the"Mexican Gringo"who's chilling out at the back of the restauraunt. He's pretty cool too.
We shared the tasting platter between 2 and it was enormous!!! Although a large serving it was quite nice. The tacos were a standout with beautiful chicken and beef and not too spicy! Food was well priced and overall quite enjoyable!
Cocktails were delicious!
A little unattentive but very polite and kind when serving. Very prompt with drink orders and food was out quite quickly.
As we went on a Sunday it lacked ambience but still comfortable. Very typical of a 'mexican' restuarant with bright colours and wooden featurettes. Loved the music, very fun and energising a quite empty restaurant
Overall:
Quite and enjoyable night. The drinks flowed, the food was generous and the service was always done with a genuine smile. A 6.5/7 out of 10.
Entre of salsa mexicana dip was very basic and poor considering the price of around $9. Everything else was soggy and bland. Having come in a group of ten, our plates had clearly been prepared and left to sit to ensure they were served at the same time. Tacos were wet and just fell apart. I wouldn't be surprised if the plates had been reheated in a microwave. Embarrassing.
With restaurant only half full drinks still took 45 mins, after waiter had to clarify numerous times. Also, I was served wrong dish. Waitress would not believe me when i pointed out that my dish was not a "Muscata". I had to prove my point by pointing out the "Muscata" on the menu. She apologised.
O.K for an alcohol fueled group night out. Unfortunately we weren't alcohol fueled because our drinks took so ridiculously long to get to our tables.
Overall:
Put it this way. Ive never been moved to write a review about any restaurant before my experience at Zapatas. I usually love mexican food, and it doesn't even have to be that good. But this will go down as one of the worst restaurants I've been to. To the manager's credit, we were given 15% off our bill and a couple cards that granted us a free taco the next time we ordered a drink there. Noooooo thanks.
If you like SOGGY and bland nachos, then this is the place for you. Also, there seems to be some confusion here between tacos and quesadillas. Tacos should be hard shells while quesadillas are flour tortillas, filled with cheese and meat. Instead, Zapatas serves SOGGY tacos in place of quesadillas. This is a problem, compounded by the tasteless fillings in either of those main dishes.
The service for our admittedly large group was slow and confused. It was difficult ordering drinks at our table, plus the wrong dishes kept being served. Get more help in the kitchen please!
Very noisy and boisterous - not much ambience at all.
Overall:
Mediocre to poor Mexican cuisine.
